Hello, #HiveCon geek-friends. I must say that this community is becoming one of my favourites of all #hive. I needed a place where I could talk about one of the things I love the most: ANIME! I must say that the initiative about childhood anime left me thinking about all those wonderful series that I have watched throughout my life, especially those that marked my childhood and adolescence. I already told you about the one that started it all, now I want to tell you about one that I discovered by chance and strangely enough became one of my absolute favourites.

Before I start, I'd like to give you a bit of context about my tastes in anime. A few years ago, shōnen was what most caught my attention, nowadays, I lean more towards seinen, always with a big touch of gore and violence. The genres I enjoy the least are shojo, slice of life and mecha, the latter of which bores me a lot. Why do I give you this context? Because the series I'm about to tell you about completely broke with the tastes I had established. It's a slice of life (with a touch of seinen, but a slice of life nonetheless), created by the famous CLAMP (yes, the ones who made Cardcaptor Sakura).
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The story of xxxHolic revolves around Kimihiro Watanuki, a high school student who has the ability to see spirits, which are attracted to him and tend to haunt him. Watanuki is a very industrious and self-sufficient young man, but he is unhappy about the creatures that constantly disturb his daily life. Luckily (or unluckily), one day, while escaping from these pesky spirits, he finds himself in front of a strange shop and inadvertently enters it.
There, Watanuki meets Yuuko, the shop owner, who explains to him that she can fulfil any wish he makes, hinting that she could free him from his ability to see and attract spirits. A little overwhelmed by Yuuko's presence and by everything he was going through, Watanuki decides to make his wish, but as we all know, all magic always comes with a price. The young man would have to stay working for Yuuko in the shop until she considered that she had covered the price of fulfilling his wish. From that moment on, Watanuki becomes her assistant and begins to delve into the world of the supernatural.
WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL?
The design
Holic has a rather peculiar animation, the design of the characters is a bit quirky and out of the ordinary. Practically, they all have slender and strangely elongated silhouettes, with legs and arms that seem to be metres and metres long. At first, they may seem a little strange, but over time you get a taste for the originality with which they are drawn.
Despite the elongated silhouettes, which make the characters look familiar from Slenderman, aesthetically the animation is beautiful, the spirits and monsters are really eye-catching and interesting. Also, there is so much influence from Japan in the story that it is inevitable that this will creep into the animation, giving us beautiful costumes and scenery. The most appealing design for me is precisely that of the shop owner, Yuuko, who is usually dressed in quite striking Kimonos and Yukatas with beautiful accessories. In fact, her design is one of my favourites from all anime in general, not just from this series. Aesthetically it's great.
Mysticism
This is my favourite thing about the series. I'm not a person who believes in superstitions or supernatural things, but I do love to see them in series and movies. Holic has this in abundance, but not only that, the amount of references to traditional Japanese culture is enormous. We are presented with numerous legends and popular beliefs, which made me fall even more in love with the culture of that country and the series. There is one episode that I remember most, in which Watanuki and two friends (Himawari and Domeki), find themselves trapped in a temple for a whole night. While they are besieged by spirits and must tell horror stories until dawn in order to be freed. The fact that most of the stories told relate to ancient Japanese legends makes this one of my favourite episodes of the entire series.
There are even recurring characters inspired by ancient Japanese stories. As is the case of the Ame Warashi and Zashiki Warashi, both are spiritual beings belonging to the folklore of that country. In the series, they are represented by two girls with quite transcendence in the story, and through them, they make us understand a little of the origin of their legends. Definitely, the greatest display of cultural details is seen in a chapter where Watanuki participates in the "Procession of the 100 Demons". This is a legend of Japanese folklore related to the summer, in which hundreds of Yokai participate in a night parade during the summer nights.
It's really wonderful the mystical and also a bit of macabre atmosphere that CLAMP managed to create in xxxHolic, simply by drawing on the ancient myths and legends of their country. That's something that always appeals to me in anime, and this one has Japanese folklore to spare.
Reflections
The serious point of the anime, being an episodic series, in each episode there is a new adventure and usually a new client for Yuuko. It is through these customers that the series teaches us a little about different values, such as loyalty, love, friendship and above all, responsibility. Many of those who come to Yuuko's shop are looking to get rid of something they have caused themselves, so she indirectly gives them back a little of the responsibility they have had in causing the problem they are in.
She commits them to pay a price for her service, which sooner or later will end up making them reflect on their mistakes and how they are the origin of their ills. So that they can free themselves of what was tormenting them. Through the process of self-discovery that the characters go through, we can do the same and reflect on similar situations that we may be going through. This is definitely where the seinen touch of the series comes through.
Mystery
There is a sense of mystery throughout most of the episodes, the truth of situations is almost never immediately revealed. So as each episode unfolds we discover, along with Watanuki, what lies behind the events the characters are facing. Sometimes the mystery involves a customer in the shop, sometimes it is caused by an encounter with a spirit or supernatural being. Accompanying this is always a shadowy aura that lends a macabre touch to some situations.
The best exponent of this is my favourite episode of the whole series, called "Hydrangea". In it, the Ame Warashi (rain spirit) asks Watanuki to help her save someone. At first, they think that it is simply an evil spirit that they must exorcize. But during the investigation, the young man discovers that in the park where the Ame Warashi took him, a crime had occurred that had not yet been solved. The corpse of the victim was still buried undiscovered and was poisoning a large hydrangea, turning its normally blue blossoms as red as blood, which were the only witness to the heinous crime.
Comedy
So far it might seem that Holic is a very serious anime, full of magic, creatures and spirits, and while that is true, it also has its fair share of comedy. Between Watanuki's awkwardness, Mokona's irreverence and the Domeki-Watanuki rivalry, there's enough comic relief to get a few good laughs. In fact, I don't know what Holic would be without the presence of Mokona, the greatest representative of comedy in the series. Nothing would make sense without her. She's ironic, sarcastic, drunk and always has a witty comment to make to Watanuki (and whoever else will let her).
Without a doubt, this is the perfect complement to the mysticism and mystery that fill the series. Without the touch of madness that certain situations and characters bring, nothing would be the same, and we would end up with a series that is too serious and perhaps a bit boring. In fact, one of my favourite episodes is the one in which Yuuko organizes a war with snowballs, magical ones of course, which ends up being really hilarious because of the amount of nonsense and nonsense that happens.
Opening and dubbing
Every good otaku has many openings in their list of favourites. In mine, one of the first places is definitely occupied by the opening song of xxxHolic. It has such a peculiar and catchy rhythm, that even years after watching the series, I still remember its opening song almost completely. In this section I would also like to highlight the excellent work of the seiyuus in charge of the dubbing, who do an extraordinary job, it's one of the dubs I've enjoyed the most. There are characters who sometimes speak with such a great cadence that it seems as if they were hypnotizing the others.
As you can see, it is an anime that stands out in many aspects and since I saw it, it has become one of my favourites, although maybe that's what makes me look at it so favourably. For whatever reason, I invite you to visit Yuuko's shop and give this anime a chance.
Todo lo que pasa en este mundo es cosa del destino - xxxHolic
Hola, friki-amigos de #HiveCon. Debo decir que esta comunidad se está convirtiendo en un de mis favoritas de todo #hive. Y es que ya necesitaba un lugar donde pudiera hablar sobre una de las cosas que más me gustan: ¡ANIME!. Debo decir que la iniciativa sobre el anime de la infancia me dejó pensando en todas aquellas maravillosas series que he visto a lo largo de toda mi vida, sobre todo aquellas que marcaron mi niñez y adolescencia. Ya les hablé acerca de la que hizo que todo comenzara, ahora quiero contarle sobre una que descubrí por casualidad y extrañamente llegó a convertirse en una de mis absolutas favoritas.
Antes de comenzar quisiera darles un poco de contexto sobre mis gustos en anime. Hace unos años el shonen era lo que más me llamaba la atención, actualmente me inclino más hacia el seinen, siempre con un gran toque de gore y violencia. Siendo así, que los géneros que menos disfruto son el shojo, los slice of life y mechas, este último sobre todo me aburre bastante. ¿Por qué les doy este contexto?, porque la serie de la que voy a contarles rompió completamente con los gustos que tenía establecidos. Es un slice of life (con un toque seinen, pero slice of life al fin), creado por las famosísimas CLAMP (sí, las que hicieron Cardcaptor Sakura).
¿DE QUÉ TRATA?
La historia de xxxHolic gira en torno a Kimihiro Watanuki, un estudiante de instituto que posee la habilidad de ver espíritus, los cuales además se sienten atraídos hacia él y tienden a perseguirlo. Watanuki es un joven muy aplicado y autosuficiente, pero se siente desdichado por las criaturas que constantemente perturban su día a día. Por suerte (o desgracia), un día, mientras escapaba de esos espíritus fastidiosos, se encuentra frente a una extraña tienda y sin darse cuenta, entra a ella.
En ese lugar, Watanuki conoce a Yuuko, la dueña de la tienda, quien le explica que ella puede cumplir cualquier deseo que le pida, insinuándole que lo podría liberar de su habilidad de ver y atraer espíritus. Un poco abrumado por la presencia de Yuuko y por todo lo que estaba viviendo, Watanuki decide pedir su deseo, pero como y todos sabemos, toda la magia siempre viene con un precio. El joven debería quedarse trabajando para Yuuko en la tienda hasta que ella considerara que había cubierto el precio de cumplir su deseo. A partir de ese momento, Watanuki se convierte en su asistente y comienza a adentrarse en el mundo de lo sobrenatural.
¿QUÉ LA HACE ESPECIAL?
El diseño
Holic tiene una animación bastante peculiar, el diseño de los personajes es un poco estrafalario y fuera de lo común. Prácticamente, todos tienen siluetas esbeltas y extrañamente alargadas, con piernas y brazos que parecen medir metros y metros de longitud. Al principio pueden parecer algo extraños, pero con el tiempo se le va tomando algo de gusto a la originalidad con que son dibujados.
A pesar de las siluetas alargadas, que hacen que los personajes parezcan familiares del Slenderman, estéticamente la animación es hermosa, los espíritus y monstruos son realmente llamativos e interesantes. Además, en la historia hay tanta influencia del Japón de antaño, que es inevitable que esta termine colándose en la animación, brindándonos vestimentas y escenarios hermosos. El diseño más interesante para mí es justamente el de la dueña de la tienda, Yuuko, la cual normalmente va vestida de con Kimonos y Yukatas bastante llamativos y con accesorios hermosos. De hecho, su diseño es uno de mis favoritos de todo el anime en general, no solo de esta serie. Estéticamente es genial.
Misticismo
Este es el punto que más me gusta de la serie. Yo no soy una persona que cree en supersticiones ni cosas sobrenaturales, pero sí que me encanta verlas en series y películas. Holic, tiene esto de sobra, pero no solo eso, la cantidad de referencias a la cultura tradicional japonesa es enorme. Nos presentan una gran cantidad de leyendas y creencias populares, que hicieron que me enamorara aún más de la cultura de ese país y de la serie. Hay un capítulo que recuerdo mucho, en el cual Watanuki y dos amigos (Himawari y Domeki), se encuentran atrapados en un templo durante toda una noche, mientras son asediados por espíritus y deben contar historias de terror hasta el amanecer para poder ser liberados. El hecho de que la mayoría de las historias contadas tengan relación con leyendas antiguas de Japón, hace que sea uno de mis capítulos favoritos de toda la serie.
Incluso hay personajes recurrentes inspirados en antiguas historias japonesas. Como es el caso de la Ame Warashi y Zashiki Warashi, ambos son seres espirituales pertenecientes al folclore de ese país y en la serie son representados por dos chicas con bastante trascendencia en la historia, y que a través de ellas nos hacen entender un poco el origen de sus leyendas. Definitivamente, el mayor despliegue de detalles culturales se ve en un capítulo donde Watanuki participa en la "Procesión de los 100 Demonios", esta es una leyenda del folclore japonés relacionada con el verano, en la cual cientos de Yokai participan en un desfile nocturno durante las noches de verano.
Es realmente maravillosa la atmósfera mística y también un poco macabra que lograron crear las CLAMP en xxxHolic, simplemente acudiendo los antiguos mitos y leyendas de su país. Eso es algo que siempre me atrae en los animes y este tiene folclore japonés de sobra.
Reflexiones
El punto serio del anime, al ser una serie episódica, en cada capítulo hay una nueva aventura y normalmente, un nuevo cliente para Yuuko. Es a través de estos clientes que la serie se encarga de enseñarnos un poco sobre diferentes valores, como la lealtad, el amor, la amistad y sobre todo, la responsabilidad. Muchos de los que llegan a la tienda de Yuuko buscan deshacerse de algo que ellos mismos se han ocasionado, así que indirectamente ella se encarga de regresarles un poco de la responsabilidad que han tenido al originarse el problema en el que están.
Ella los compromete a pagar un precio por su servicio, el cual tarde o temprano los terminará haciendo reflexionar sobre sus errores y de como estos son el origen de sus males, para que así ellos mismos logren liberarse de lo que les estaba atormentando. A través del proceso de autodescubrimiento que viven los personajes, nosotros podemos hacer lo mismo y reflexionar sobre situaciones similares que podamos estar atravesando. En este punto definitivamente se nota el toque de seinen de la serie.
Misterio
En la mayoría de los capítulos hay una sensación de misterio, la verdad de las situaciones casi nunca se revelan de manera inmediata. Así que a medida que transcurre cada episodio vamos descubriendo, junto a Watanuki, lo que hay detrás de los hechos a los que se enfrentan los personajes. A veces el misterio envuelve a un cliente de la tienda, otras es ocasionado tras un encuentro con un espíritu o ser sobrenatural. Acompañando a esto siempre hay un aura tenebrosa que le da un toque macabro a algunas situaciones.
El mejor exponente de esto es mi capítulo favorito de toda la serie, llamado “Hortensia”. En este, la Ame Warashi (espíritu de la lluvia) le pide a Watanuki que la ayude a salvar a alguien. Al principio piensan que simplemente se trata de algún espíritu maligno que deben exorcizar, sin embargo, durante la investigación, el joven descubre que en el parque al que lo llevó la Ame Warashi, había ocurrido un crimen que aún no había sido resuelto. Por lo que el cadáver de la víctima todavía se encontraba enterrado sin ser descubierto y estaba envenenando a una gran hortensia, al grado de convertir sus flores, normalmente azules, en unas tan rojas como la sangre, las cuales eran el único testigo de aquel atroz crimen.
Comedia
Hasta ahora podría parecer que Holic es un anime muy serio, lleno de magia, criaturas y espíritus, y aunque eso es cierto, también tiene su buena parte de comedia. Entre la torpeza de Watanuki, la irreverencia de Mokona y la rivalidad Domeki-Watanuki, hay suficiente alivio cómico como para arrancarnos unas buenas risas. De hecho, no sé que sería de Holic sin la presencia de Mokona, la mayor representante de la comedia dentro la serie. Nada tendría sentido sin ella. Es irónica, sarcástica, borracha y siempre tiene un comentario ingenioso para hacerle a Watanuki (y quien se deje).
Sin duda, este es el complemento perfecto para el misticismo y misterio que llenan la serie. Sin el toque de locura que aportan ciertas situaciones y personajes nada sería igual y terminaríamos con una serie demasiado seria y quizás algo aburrida. De hecho, uno de mis capítulos preferidos es en el que Yuuko organiza una guerra con bolas de nieve, mágicas, por supuesto, el cual termina siendo realmente hilarante por la cantidad de tonterías y sinsentidos que ocurren.
Opening y doblaje
Todos buen otaku tiene una amplia cantidad de openings en su lista de favoritos. En la mía definitivamente uno de los primeros puestos lo ocupa la canción de entrada de xxxHolic. Es que tiene un ritmo tan peculiar y pegajoso, que incluso años después de haber visto la serie, sigo recordando su canción de inicio casi por completo. En este apartado también me gustaría destacar el excelente trabajo de los seiyuus encargados del doblaje, quienes hacen una labor extraordinaria, es uno de los doblajes que más he disfrutado. Hay personajes que a veces hablan con una cadencia tan genial que parece que como si estuvieran hipnotizando a los demás.
Como podrán darse cuenta es un anime que se destaca en muchos aspectos y que desde que lo vi se convirtió en uno de mis favoritos, aunque quizás eso mismo haga que lo vea con tan buenos ojos. Sea por la razón que sea, los invito a que se animen a visitar la tienda de Yuuko y le den una oportunidad a este anime.
