A finales de los años 80 en Venezuela oía hablar en la Universidad de un Anime revolucionario llamado Akira, el cual se basaba en un Manga Japonés del mismo nombre. Yo ya tenía información sobre el tema ya que desde aquella época coleccionaba revistas españolas especializadas en cine y tenía acceso a otro tipo de revistas especializadas de carácter importado en idioma inglés, en ellas siempre había espacio para comentar temas relacionados con el manga, el anime y el mundo de la animación.
Demás está decir que ya había visionado desde los años 70 en la televisión animes como Astroboy, Fantasmagórico, Kimba, el león blanco, Mazinger Z, Heidi, Los Caballeros del Zodiaco, Captain Futuro, El Galactico, Meteoro (Speed Racer), Ulises 31, Candy Candy, Angel la niña de las flores, Sailor Moon, Remi, Marco y muchos otros. En mi niñez no le decían animes a estos programas, todos los dibujas animados eran conocidos como comiquitas.
Las historias eran muy variadas y siempre me llamo la atención el hecho de que el tipo de dibujo era muy distinto al de las comiquitas americanas o de otros países distintos al Japón.
Volviendo a Akira, he de decir que no fue hasta 1990 que pude conseguir una copia en formato VHS del tan comentado Anime en un mercado muy popular en el centro de Caracas llamado La Hoyada.
Me encontré con una distopia (es una sociedad humana futura en donde están encarnados los miedos sociales y políticos de una época ), en el año 2019 muchos años después de la Tercera Guerra Mundial. Hay una ciudad llamada Neo-Tokyo muy caótica en la cual se percibe mucho ruido y luces por todos lados . La juventud es muy problemática, por ello la estación de policía siempre se encuentra llena. Adicionalmente, el gobierno tiene un proyecto militar que utiliza humanos con el don de la telekinesis para utilizarlos como armas.
Los jóvenes no reciben ningún tipo de educación y pasan su tiempo en un submundo en donde encontramos carreras de motos, drogas y peleas. Se observan manifestaciones y un ejército que los ataca ferozmente. El estado corrupto y controlador los llama terroristas. Detrás de todo esto el Gobierno autoritario lo que busca es crear un arma letal para controlar el mundo.
Tetsuo, es un personaje que siempre estuvo a la sombra de su mejor amigo Kaneda, e huérfano y abandonado recibiendo el cariño de su amigo Kaneda, el cual se nos muestra fuerte, valiente y muy descarado, haciéndole sombra a su amigo Tetsuo.
Kaneda es el líder de una banda de motociclistas delincuentes, implicado con un grupo anti-gubernamental solo para localizar a Tetsuo cuando este sea secuestrado por el gobierno.
Tetsuo, tiene un accidente en su moto por culpa de un extraño niño anciano (un experimento secreto por parte del Gobierno). Al exponerse a sus poderes adquiere una energía que parece ser de interés para el experimento gubernamental. Al darse cuenta de las nuevas capacidades que tiene, se cree invencible.
En el anime observaremos la existencia de un consejo de Neo-Tokyo; un movimiento de resistencia terrorista contra el gobierno que pretende salvar a la nación de burócratas corruptos e ineficaces en el poder. Sin embargo se descubre que este grupo es tan nefasto como el gobierno que desea derrocar.
El Gobierno experimenta con Tetsuo provocándole sufrimiento, dolor físico y alucinaciones, pero llega un momento en el que no le importa que su poder pueda destruir la ciudad, matar a sus habitantes o autodestruirse a sí mismo. Tetsuo sufre de ira, de una furia incontrolable.

Al estar obsesionado con Kaneda, lo primero que reclama al saberse tan poderoso es la moto de su amigo, la cual él siempre quiso conducir.
Todo esto ocurre bajo la larga sombra del misterioso Akira, una figura que todos alaban, temen y recuerdan por su destrucción de la ciudad treinta años atrás. Este personaje es el experimento # 28. Este logra desarrollar peligrosas habilidades, sobre todo psíquicas, cuando servía como experimento para el gobierno en los años 80. El gobierno perdió el control sobre Akira y este aniquila Tokio en 1988. Dado el peligro que representaba fue confinado y sujeto a pruebas de nuevo y su cuerpo se coloco en una capsula criogénica que se ubica debajo del Estadio Olímpico de Neo Tokyo.
Akira fue una creación del gobierno que se descontrola, con Tetsuo, este vuelve a buscar exactamente lo mismo, pero intentan su control absoluto, lo cual no consiguen.
Hay una sub-trama muy interesante que involucra a los individuos denominados experimentos #25, #26, y #27, (también conocidos como Espers), son tres niños, expuestos a los mismos experimentos que Akira los cuales tiene poderes de telekinesis, tele transporte y precognición. Estos son de suma importancia para la trama ya que con sus poderes logran despertar a Akira ya como una entidad sobrenatural que ayuda a contener el poder de Tetsuo, el cual se encuentra creciendo de una manera exponencial.

El anime es una historia de autodestrucción de los seres humanos por el ansia de poder, y control, nos habla de una humanidad que repite sus errores con tal de conseguir el control absoluto.
Akira además de presentar un mensaje contundente significo para la animación japonesa una ambiciosa creación con un gran presupuesto y un nivel de animación y producción muy adelantado a su tiempo. Es un anime que dio visibilidad a este tipo de cine a nivel mundial y preparo el camino para grandes éxitos como Dragon Ball, Naruto y Pokemon.
Adicionalmente, mostró a un mundo acostumbrado a las producciones estilo Disney otra manera de hacer animación. Este anime escrito y dirigido en 1988 por Katsuhiro Otomo es considerada por muchos como la mejor película de animación japonesa, junto a las dirigidas por Hayao Miyazaki, (fundador de Estudios Ghibli y director de películas de anime como Porco Rosso, El Viaje de Chihiro, La Princesa Mononoke entre muchas otras obras de arte del anime japonés.
Akira presenta claras referencias a Rebelde sin Causa de Nicholas Ray , Videodrome de David Cronenberg, Blade Runner de Ridley Scott y 2001: A Space Odyssey de Stanley Kubrick. Ha influenciado a películas como Midnight Special de Jeff Nichols, Chronicle de Josh Trank e Inception de Chritopher Nolan, al punto de que dos de esas tres películas tienen un niño con poderes telequinéticos destructivos. En televisión, Stranger Things, pone su foco en Eleven, una niña entrenada para usar sus poderes telequinéticos como arma.
En cuanto a la música basta ver la comparación entre el anime y el video de Kanye West de su canción Stronger Link Aqui para palpar las referencias a Akira que se hacen en el.

At the end of the 80's in Venezuela I heard in the University about a revolutionary Anime called Akira, which was based on a Japanese Manga of the same name. I already had information on the subject because since that time I collected Spanish magazines specialized in cinema and had access to other specialized magazines of imported character in English language, in them there was always space to comment on issues related to manga, anime and the world of animation.
Needless to say, I had already watched since the 70's on TV anime such as Astroboy, Phantasmagoric, Kimba, the white lion, Mazinger Z, Heidi, The Knights of the Zodiac, Captain Future, Galactic, Speed Racer, Ulysses 31, Candy Candy, Angel the flower girl, Sailor Moon, Remi, Marco and many others. In my childhood these programs were not called anime, all the cartoons were known as comics.
The stories were very varied and I was always struck by the fact that the type of drawing was very different from American cartoons or cartoons from countries other than Japan.
Going back to Akira, I have to say that it wasn't until 1990 that I was able to get a VHS copy of the much talked about Anime in a very popular market in downtown Caracas called La Hoyada.
I came across a dystopia (it is a future human society where the social and political fears of an era are embodied), in the year 2019 many years after the Third World War. There is a city called Neo-Tokyo very chaotic in which there is a lot of noise and lights everywhere. The youth is very troubled, so the police station is always full. Additionally, the government has a military project that uses humans with the gift of telekinesis to use them as weapons.
The young people do not receive any kind of education and spend their time in an underworld where we find motorcycle races, drugs and fights. Demonstrations are observed and an army fiercely attacks them. The corrupt and controlling state calls them terrorists. Behind all this, the authoritarian government seeks to create a lethal weapon to control the world.
Tetsuo, is a character who was always in the shadow of his best friend Kaneda, and orphaned and abandoned receiving the affection of his friend Kaneda, which shows us strong, brave and very brazen, shadowing his friend Tetsuo.
Kaneda is the leader of a criminal motorcycle gang, involved with an anti-government group just to locate Tetsuo when he is kidnapped by the government.
Tetsuo, has an accident on his motorcycle because of a strange old boy (a secret experiment by the government). When he is exposed to his powers, he acquires an energy that seems to be of interest to the government experiment. Realizing his newfound abilities, he believes he is invincible.
In the anime we will observe the existence of a Neo-Tokyo council; a terrorist resistance movement against the government that aims to save the nation from corrupt and ineffective bureaucrats in power. However, it is discovered that this group is as nefarious as the government it wishes to overthrow.
The government experiments on Tetsuo by causing him suffering, physical pain and hallucinations, but there comes a time when it does not care that his power could destroy the city, kill its inhabitants or self-destruct itself. Tetsuo suffers from rage, from uncontrollable fury.

Being obsessed with Kaneda, the first thing he claims upon learning he is so powerful is his friend's motorcycle, which he always wanted to ride.
All this takes place under the long shadow of the mysterious Akira, a figure everyone praises, fears and remembers for his destruction of the city thirty years earlier. This character is Experiment #28. He manages to develop dangerous abilities, especially psychic ones, while serving as an experiment for the government in the 1980s. The government lost control over Akira and he annihilated Tokyo in 1988. Because of the danger he posed, he was confined and tested again and his body was placed in a cryogenic capsule located underneath the Neo Tokyo Olympic Stadium.
Akira was a government creation that goes out of control, with Tetsuo, this one again seeks the exact same thing, but they attempt his absolute control, which they fail to achieve.
There is a very interesting sub-plot involving the individuals called Experiments #25, #26, and #27, (also known as Espers), three children, exposed to the same experiments as Akira, who have powers of telekinesis, teleportation and precognition. These are of utmost importance to the plot since with their powers they manage to awaken Akira already as a supernatural entity that helps contain Tetsuo's power, which is growing exponentially.

The anime is a story of self-destruction of human beings by the lust for power, and control, tells of a humanity that repeats its mistakes in order to achieve absolute control.
Akira, besides presenting a strong message, meant for Japanese animation an ambitious creation with a big budget and a level of animation and production far ahead of its time. It is an anime that gave visibility to this type of cinema worldwide and paved the way for big hits like Dragon Ball, Naruto and Pokemon.
Additionally, it showed a world accustomed to Disney-style productions another way of making animation. This anime written and directed in 1988 by Katsuhiro Otomo is considered by many as the best Japanese animated film, next to those directed by Hayao Miyazaki, (founder of Ghibli Studios and director of anime films such as Porco Rosso, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke among many other works of art of Japanese anime.
Akira features clear references to Nicholas Ray's Rebel Without a Cause, David Cronenberg's Videodrome, Ridley Scott's Blade Runner and Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. It has influenced films such as Jeff Nichols' Midnight Special, Josh Trank's Chronicle and Chritopher Nolan's Inception, to the point that two of those three films feature a child with destructive telekinetic powers. On television, Stranger Things, puts its focus on Eleven, a girl trained to use her telekinetic powers as a weapon.
As for the music, just look at the comparison between the anime and Kanye West's video of his song Stronger Link Aqui to see the references to Akira that are made in it.
