Replacing Glass Door in the Bath Room /

Newly installed glass door

Our bathtub had a folding plastic door. It was not easy to completely clean, didn’t look nice, and for a long time, I’d been wanting to replace it to a glass one. I especially disliked how it interrupted the view when I take a relaxing bath. Still, it served us well, so I must be thankful to it.

The old door ...

As the season turned colder and darker, I found myself wanting to take more baths. This finally motivated me to replace the door. Since this was a personal choice, we paid for it ourselves, which, including car rental and other expenses, came to about 100 euros. I figured it was worth it if it made bath time more enjoyable.

It turned out to be much larger and heavier than I had imagined, so I asked my partner to come along. We managed to cram it into a small car and bring it home.

I thought installation would take about an hour, but it quickly became more complicated. The holes I drilled in the wall initially didn’t align with the screw holes of the pole of the door. Now, I'm fairly good at this kind of task. I measured everything carefully, marked the spots, drilled pilot holes, and gradually enlarged them. Yet, the alignment was off. Then I remembered that the old door’s pole had been slightly bent. Upon closer inspection, I realized the wall itself wasn’t straight, some tiles are popping out 😱 This was a surprise! When we installed curtain rails previously, we discovered that the ceiling wasn’t straight either ...

To solve the problem, I filled the initial holes, started with one loose screw to hold the frame in place, then adjusted, and drilled the next hole to match. By making small adjustments, I was able to compensate for the uneven wall, and eventually, the pole to support the door was secured.

Next came attaching the door itself. Since the door could be installed on either side, the screw holes had to be drilled by myself. This was another challenge because the pole wasn’t perfectly straight. With my partner holding the heavy glass door, I managed to drill holes and tighten the screws, and finally, the job was done after four hours 💪

Juhuuuuu 🥳

Where I live, I heard many houses have thin walls, and often hear stories about shelves falling, high humidity in basements, or even flooding. Earlier this year, our kitchen shelf that the former residents sold us fell off the wall 😭 Luckily, no one injured and our basement stays dry. But crooked walls? When I lived in southern Germany, I never encountered issues like this and never even heard rumors about funny house things. I wonder it’s something from the time East and West Germany were separated.

At first, I thought about posting this under "Rant, Complaint, Talk," but then I realized it’s more of a DIY story, in a way I enjoyed in the end.

All in all, it was a good learning experience as always. If I ever need to replace a bathroom door again, I’ll know how to handle it. Doing DIY projects in Germany has been a lot of fun, and I’m getting better at it each time over the last 10 years.

My tools increase over the years

Have a great weekend, everyone. I’m looking forward to enjoying being at my market stands on Saturday and Sunday—and, of course, taking a bath afterwards in our upgraded bathroom 🛀 🛀 🛀

I seriously dislike those shower screens - I have never used a shower where one is fitted that keeps the water in the shower! When my bathroom was refitted, the builders put a screen which I didn't like - it was too big for the space plus it was hard to live with, marked by the slightest splash from someone washing their hands at the washbasin next o it and I had to get into the bath to clean the tiles around the bath.

After a long story, during which time the tiles were replaced twice and the screen put back in error 😱, I now have a tension rail and a shower curtain. No fitting to awkward walls and easy to rinse the curtain every now and then!

Well done with your perseverance! 💪

Shower curtain could be an option and it's away light ... I have now muscle sore after holding the heavy glass 😭

Finding an ideal home is difficult. I heard an interesting hypothesis recently that homes are connected and communicating each other. So we’d better treat our home nicely. I replaced the screen also because I heard this. I may have a good luck for my new office soon!

🥳

Well done! It's about not being afraid and just do it, the first projects doesn't look perfect maybe but we can save so much money by doing these small jobs ourselves, and it's fun too!
Good your partner lend a hand too, my wife always helps me on home improvements and sometimes give valuable insights when I over complicate things 😆
