I have been wanting this kind of wood table for at least a year. I was dreaming about owning a piece of wood furniture in order to make my little cozy place a bit more welcoming.
As I was visiting the furniture shops I felt a big disappointment as the majority of the pieces I was looking at lacked functionality and a nature’s vibe.
I believe that it is ideal to make the best of any space that we use. I reckon that in the future pieces of furniture will have to have multiple uses and functionality and to fill in the space in a very organic way. I see no point in having a piece of furniture which looks beautiful but occupies a lot of space without making the best out of it. I also believe that as population grows and the increase in demand for homes will put some pressure on the people we will see a change in design tendencies and that , slowly, humans will realize that in order to make their life easy they have to own multi-purpose pieces that leave their home with as much space as possible while also being able to be used in various scenarios.
I decided that I will build my own wood table out of pine wood. This is my first big project in carpentry and I admit that doing all of this with only a hand saw was demanding. At the end of the project I felt soreness in some muscles I never knew I had. Nevertheless the feeling that I had after finishing is priceless: I can feel closer to nature while I eat or work at this table. I see the wood. I smell it.
I know that this is somehow alive as I have put my soul into it. I can nurture it with linseed oil and pine essential oil. I can always modify it and put another coat of colour. This can be moved around as I have put wheels on it and is incorporated in the bench on which I am sitting.
The hardest part was to put it all together. As I did this in my small home I used the books from my beloved library as support for the wood. Pretty creative, right? It is hard to work in wood but very satisfying. I felt like a little creator and I had the vibe that somehow I must have been doing this maybe in a past life. I loved the feeling of seing a product coming out of my hands slowly.
I wanted to give it a nordic vibe so I used a matte white eco finish to paint some of the table in white.
As you can see I thought of it all: I have put some support in order to be able to put the cutlery right on the top of the table and have them still while moving the table. I have put some shelves in order to have a place for napkins and other kitchen paraphernalia. I wanted this table to give me a comfortable experience while eating so I thought about having a support place for my feet where I could put a coloured piece of cotton or wool to keep my feet warm.
I am proud to say that this table is unique in the entire world. No one has a table like this. The feeling of owning a custom piece of wood art gives me joy and a sense of gratitude for the huge amount of talent that God has placed in my mind.
I look at it and sometimes I can’t believe I did this.
If you are going to do this kind of project indoors I give you a warning: it will get messy and dusty. But the final prize is well worth the mess.
P.S. I used this table also for making my bodypaintings. I love having so much space and to be able to have one furniture item that I can use for multiple activities
