Xylotrupes socrates | 25 12 2024 | North Acèh Regency, Acèh, Indonesia |
I had the opportunity to observe one of the most interesting insects, namely Xylotrupes socrates, or better known as the horned beetle. I found this beetle in the garden area near the house in the afternoon, when the atmosphere began to cool down.
This beetle has a shiny dark brown body with striking horns that add to the impression of being dashing. The horns are not only for display, but are also used in fights between males to compete for females or territory. When I approached it carefully, this beetle seemed calm and not too disturbed by my presence.
To get the details, I placed it on a small branch. From this perspective, I could see its sturdy body structure, strong legs with sharp grips, and truly iconic horns. This beetle seemed to enjoy its position, as if it was examining its environment.
This observation reminded me of how important insects like horned beetles are in the ecosystem. They help in the recycling process of organic matter, especially rotting wood, while also being part of the food chain.
As a note, observing insects like this also requires caution so as not to injure them or damage their habitat. So, even though I wanted to photograph him from different angles, I made sure not to stress him out.
