The city of Vancouver was incorporated in 1886, so relatively speaking, the St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church is old by west coast standards, having been built in 1933 on what is now the downtown core. One of the striking elements of its design is the stained-glass work that creates a multi-colour visual extravaganza showcasing several Christian scenes and personages.
I was passing by the church the other night when I happened to turn my head and saw the stained-glass windows creating a beautiful glowing effect. I often walk by that church without a second glance, but that night the light on the window looked particularly bright and vivid. 😎
I stopped to take a few pictures from outside and marveled at the stained glass, which according to Wikipedia, is "the most diverse array of stained glass windows of any church in Vancouver."
I've attended this church once for a Christmas music concert, and surprisingly I didn't burst into flames. The effects of the stained glass are angelic psychedelic, especially accompanied by reverberating sounds that echo in the cavernous chamber. I can only imagine their effect on those early congregations that had not been saturated in technicolour multimedia the way we are in present-day society.
