New cards and abilities!

Bringing New Life to the Game

The new rewards cards and abilities are really bringing some new life to Splinterlands. It feels a bit like when Chaos Legion was released and there was a lot of learning to do. I've been fortunate enough to pick up two of the new summoners and a handful of the cards, but I am still getting a handle on how best to play with and against the new strategies.

A Great Example

Tarsa v. Astral

Typically, I like to break down my card choices and reasoning, but for this battle I think it is much more interesting to dig deeper into my opponent's cards as they offer a good insight into the new cards.

Okay, so technically Astral Entity is a Chaos card, but as the most recent airdrop card I'm still considering it a new card and am still surprised to see it on the battlefield.

OPPONENT'S CARD
WHY IS IT INTERESTING
Okay, so technically Astral Entity is a Chaos card, but as the most recent airdrop card I'm still considering it a new card and am still surprised to see it on the battlefield. Resurrect and Dodge are going to both be tough for my melee heavy lineup. The Armor debuff is negated this battle thanks to the Unprotected ruleset.
Arkemeis has such high helath and the halving could do me in, but with Protect negated I'm not sure this was my opponent's best play.
Riftwing has always been a defensive play due to its lack of attack. The new ability Weapons Training changes all that this battle.
Weapons Trianing! This card may cost eight mana for only two magic attack, but it adds an attacking ability to adjacent non-attacking cards. This means Riftwing can attack now 😮
Rift isn't new, but I still don't see many of these guys in the wild. Blast, Reflection Shield and three magic attack are potent!
Not a new card, but the Triage ability is going to make it more difficult for me to take out the back row.
Still a surprise when I encounter a Runi. The Rebirth ability, combined with Astral's resurrect is going to make my team work much harder to actually keep my opponent's cards from coming back to hurt me.

Whew, That's A Lot to Unpack

While there is quite a bit to unpack here my favorite part of this battle was seeing my opponent's Riftwing gain a magic attack. Don't get me wrong, it sucked having that come at me, but it was still cool to see 😀 As more of us start adding Weapons Training to our collection it is going to be so much fun to see the combinations that players are able to deploy.

At the end of the day, aside from having to take Runi out three times, this battle leaned heavy in my favor. My opponent seemed to go for all the new flash, but with the Unprotected ruleset my opponent failed to properly synergize the new abilities and cards to the actual battle. I was able to overcome this time around, but as players start to learn how best to synergize the new cards and abilities with the existing collection, it is going to open up many new strategies that are going to have to be considered. Adding this to a potential battle with three rulesets and it is making the game more challenging, but also more fun in my eyes.

Ya your opponent played poorly I think for this battle. Maybe they imagined the battle differently than they expected
