Recently, our Guild, @clanft-bank gained some new members who have joined for SPS Brawls, and we went up to Tier 2, where we are earning more, but facing more challenge: Many of our players needed to adapt to brawls and needed some strategies. In order to capitalize on this, the Clan and I will be writing a joint series of Strategies focused around Gladiator Cards, and Brawl Strategies for newer, smaller players in each league who are looking to play a bit more competitively.
We will start with Earth, and move through each Splinter in Novice League before switching to Bronze League.
Many of Earth's Gladiators are very powerful low mana monsters, providing significant power in low mana especially, which is why Earth tends to be a very strong pick for low mana. Earth also happens to have one of the few Gladiator cards I would rate S Tier, making it the easiest one to start with, as this makes the strategies here very cut and dry: Novice = Use your highest tier card, except in situations where you don't own it, or can't.
This strategy guide will be for Novice players specifically, and assume all 1 BCX, I am NOT rating these cards for their additional abilities or levels, purely as is.
Low Mana Strategies
Obsidian/Llama + Quora is extremely potent, to the point of almost being a cheap strategy. This will stack bodies against most of your opponents, and is very easy to build, adding in Core cards as you go up in Mana. But what do you do if you don't have Quora?
One of my favorite Novice teams is low mana Earth. At your core is going to be Queen Mycelia and Hill Giant, as well as Jini if you have her. Other core CL Cards that will be good for this play are Fungus Fiend and Mycelic Morphoid. You can throw in things like Chaos Agent, but honestly, at 1 BCX it doesn't really make sense.
Generally speaking, you will use some combination of Hill Giant + Queen Mycelia:
Here are some Obisdian Oriented Compositions capitalizing on +1 Magic
CL + RW Brawls: Hill Giant + Fungus Fiend + Regal Peryton + Queen Mycelia w/ Obsidian = 16 Mana
Modern Brawls: Hill Giant + Failed Summoner + Khmer Princess + Queen Mycelia/Jini w/ Obsidian = 15 Mana
You can use this team interchangeably with Mylor as well. Using Mylor for any of these comps makes it very anti-melee - and is especially good in Lost Magic
You can switch around different parts of each team, based on what you need - For instance, in Melee Only or Lost Magic, you'd replace Queen Mycelia with Uraeus, or Goblin Thief, or maybe replace Mustang with Hill Giant + Katrelba.
Fernheart
Fernheart is a newer summoner, but gives room for cheap rentals, and can allow you to play some interesting teams based off of this general core, and play Earth effectively, even in Lost Magic and with no Mylor.
Notice that each of these comps is not a full 6 Monster team: I am trying to give you Base templates to work off of, and modify when you have additional mana. I am not just giving free win teams, I am trying to show you what meshes well for each team.
Fernheart's team here has a severe weakness: It does not damage Shield monsters unless Cutter gets a kill! - YOU will need to think about how to mitigate that on your teams, that is a part of strategizing, that I am hopefully trying to show you so that you can rock your own teams from here on out. Think about what your team's WEAKNESS is, and then fix it, or avoid playing it in a situation where that is plentiful.
Here are some Fernheart Oriented Compositions capitalizing on Armor and Range:
CL + RW Brawls: Runemancer Florre w/ Fernheart: 17 Mana or Hill Giant + Acid Shooter + Iza the Fanged + Queen Mycelia w/ Fernheart = 17 Mana
Modern Brawls Hill Giant + Failed Summoner + Acid Shooter + Queen Mycelia/Jini
Alpha Beta Brawls
Finally, let's take a look at A/B Brawls in Novice,
Here's a small list to help you with all of this that you have learned:
- Untamed Additions: Failed Summoner and Khmer Princess really amplifies this basic composition nicely
- Dice Additions: Goblin Dartling is a nice addition for Fernheart.
- Gladius Additions: Cutter Brieze is an excellent choice for Fernheart/Prince Rennyn, otherwise, Jini, Quora, or Ketrelba.
- Riftwatcher Additions: Fernheart will allow you to use this type of team without Magic. It is not as efficent, but it will work.
- Reward Additions: Djinn Biljka is a potent addition for Obsidian Comps, and Furious Chicken is an excellent rental to add in if you're playing in the A/B Brawls
