Hi Guys! In this post we are exploring on another Splinterlands ruleset. The ruleset we are focusing on this week is Back to Basics.
In a Back to Basics ruleset, all units lose their abilities. Back to Basics doesn't affect your summoner's abilities though so choosing the right summoner is key.
Lets take a look at a Wild Silver ranked match with Back to Basics as one of the ruleset. The battle restrictions are:
Rise of the Commons and Back to Basics with a max mana of 24. All splinters are allowed except for Water:

Splinter | Mana Cost | Position | Reason |
---|---|---|---|
Immortalis | 6 | Summoner | First off most of us like to use magic attack in a Back to Basics ruleset. This is because magic attack bypass armor. And since all units' abilities are disabled now, even those with Void or Void Armor can't stop magic. This thus means summoners like Immortalis and Grandmaster Rathe extremely powerful as they are unaffected by the Back to Basics ruleset and would give the units under them Void and Void Armor respectively. But I currently only rented a level 1 Immortalis and using it would means all my other units would be lowered in level. In the end I bite the bullet and risked it as I really think my opponent is either going for Obsidian or Thaddius Brood. |
Hill Giant | 3 | 1st | I was looking for a high health tank and the cheapest one in my current Earth splinter is Hill Giant. Hill Giant only costs 3 mana and has pretty good health. I was hoping the high health would gave me time to dwindle down my opponent units. |
Suidae Shaman | 8 | 2nd | I had problem deciding on the unit to place from here on. I had only 15 mana left and needed units with high health and speed. Unfortunately Earth units are very slow. I was thinking of putting Mycelic Slipspawn here as it has a good health but Slipspawn costs 9 mana which will left me with only 6 mana to go. I instead went with Suidae Shaman. Looking back it probably wasn't that much of a better choice as it costs 8 mana and has less health than Slipspawn. |
Venari Spellsmith | 4 | 3rd | The remaining 7 mana I spent 4 on Venari Spellsmith here. Spellsmith has low health and speed but at least it is faster than 1. |
Goblin Sorcerer | 3 | 4th | The last 3 mana was spent on Goblin Sorcerer which also has 2 speed and a low health. |
Total Mana: | 24 |
Opponent Lineup:
My opponent went with an Earth splinter lineup with Obsidian as the summoner. It was a magic attacking lineup with a few cannon fodders at the front. I was pleasantly surprised though that the summoner is only level 2. A level 2 rare summoner is equivalent to a level 1 legendary summoner so this meant both of our units level would be similar rather than mine being lower.
End of Round 1:
I very quickly dispatched off my opponent's 2 cannon fodders and then faced the main tank, Mycelic Slipspawn. My Hill Giant, with Void, managed to survive the first round of magic attack threw at it. However it would die in the next round as it ended with just 2 health left.
End of Round 2:
By the end of Round 2, it looked like a very close fight. We ended the round with 3 units on each side. My opponent had a much higher attack (double that of mine) but I had Void on my units. Speed will determine the winner.
End of Round 3:
I managed to destroy the opponent Mycelic Slipspawn before it can attack and that was huge. With the Slipspawn dead, my opponent remaining units were vulnerable and easy picking as they had very low health.
End of Round 4:
With only 1 unit remaining at the end of round 4, the match was over for my opponent.
End of Round 5:
It might looked like an easy victory but it was not. Had my opponent Mycelic Slipspawn been a level higher, it would be hard to say who would have won.
KEY STRATEGY
My strategy was to use my under levelled Immortalis to give Void and Shatter to my magic units and try to outlast my opponent. Fortunately my opponent also used a under levelled summoner which thus didn't put me at a disadvantage and the strategy worked.
SUMMARY
There are a few things to look out for in a Back to Basics ruleset. Some of the more important things to consider are:
- Summoner - Your summoner is probably your most important unit in this ruleset as only the summoner abilities are unaffected by Back to Basics. Summoner that gives Void, Void Armor and Healing are extremely powerful in this ruleset.
- Magic Attack - Magic is important as it bypass armor. The higher your magic attack the faster you can cut down the opponent lineup.
- Speed - Speed is also very important as well as you don't want your unit to be cut down before they can attack.
