Hi Guys! In this post we are exploring on another Splinterlands ruleset. The ruleset we are focusing on is Earthquake.
In an Earthquake ruleset, all non-flying units take 2 physical damage at the end of every turn.
Flying units that are snared are also considered non-flying. The damage incurred from Earthquake effect is physical. This mean the damage can be reduced to 1 if the unit has the shield ability. Immunity doesn't protect against Earthquake.
Lets take a look at a Wild Silver ranked match with Earthquake as one of the ruleset. The battle restrictions are:
Melee Mayhem and Earthquake with a max mana of 28. Only Water and Earth splinters are allowed in this battle. The Video for the Full Battle can be seen here:

Splinter | Mana Cost | Position | Reason |
---|---|---|---|
Obsidian | 4 | Summoner | I have more flying units on my Earth splinters so I went with Obsidian in this Earthquake ruleset match. Kelya is a good summoner to use as well as its shield will protect all ground units for a turn. However I was worried the battle will drag on so decided to focus on flying units instead. |
Gargoya Lion | 6 | 1st | Gargoya Lion was my 1st tank because it has Void and is a flyer. I wouldn't be surprise if my opponent went for magic units in this match so Void would be a good defense right from the start. |
Pelacor Mercenary | 7 | 2nd | Pelacor Mercenary was my 2nd tank. Reason for it at the 2nd position was because it can hit from that position now due to the Melee Mayhem ruleset. Pelacor Mercenary also has high health and would make a good tank once my Gargoya Lion is dead. |
Fungus Flinger | 3 | 3rd | I had Fungus Flinger at the 3rd position because it is a ground unit with Martyr ability. Unit with Martyr ability when destroyed would give surrounding units +1 to all their stats. I intended for Fungus Flinger to die to Earthquake and then boost its surrounding Flying neigbours. I could also put Fungus Flinger at the 2nd position instead but I was worried that my Gargoya Lion would died before Fungus Flinger and thus not able to enjoy the Martyr boost from the Flinger's death. |
Regal Peryton | 5 | 4th | Regal Peryton sitting on the 4th position would benefit from Fungus Flinger's Martyr when Flinger died. A boosted Regal Peryton is very durable due to its fast speed and good magic attack. |
Venari Marksrat | 3 | 5th | I placed another Martyr unit, Venari Marksrat, at the 6th position to further boost my Regal Peryton. It can also served as a buffer to sneak attack. |
Total Mana: | 28 |
Opponent Lineup:
My opponent went with a Water splinter lineup with Kelya Frendul as the summoner. It was a mixed lineup with some ground units flyers. The biggest unit was Djinn Oshannus, which was acting as the tank. I was fairly confident I could win when I first saw the lineup because I had Gargoya Lion at the front to counter enemy's magic attack.
End of Round 1:
The battle was harder than I anticipated as I had some problems hitting the opponent fast tank, Djinn Oshannus. To make matters worse, I noticed even the opponent 0 mana unit, Furious Chicken, has melee attack. With Melee Mayhem, these small units can also hit me from the back. This put immense pressure on my front unit. My opponent use just 1 mana on Torrent Fiend and Furious Chicken to gain 2 melee attack on me. On top of that, my opponent also added Venari Wavesmith to give armor to the entire lineup to buy time on Earthquake damage.
End of Round 2:
2nd round saw me losing my Gargoya Lion and Venari Marksrat. The loss of Venari Marsrat boosted my Regal Peryton though. My opponent also lost the Djinn Oshannus but I only had 3 units left and was facing 5 units on the opposing side.
End of Round 3:
3rd round saw me losing my Fungus Flinger to Earthquake which led to it boosting my remaining 2 units with Martyr. I am left with 2 units against 5 on the opposing side. However my remaining 2 units were strong whereas my opponent ground units had lost the armor protection and will felt the effect of Earthquake soon.
End of Round 4:
Earthquake very quickly destroyed my opponent Torrent Fiend and Furious Chicken at the start of the round. This was followed by my remaining unit each killing off the opposing Gargoya Lion and Venari Wavesmith. In just 1 turn, my opponents lost 4 units.
End of Round 5:
I won the battle after 5 rounds. I appeared to be losing initially but Earthquake slowly shifting the match to my advantage.
KEY STRATEGY
My key strategy in this match lied in sacrificing Martyr units to Earthquake to boost my flying units. It worked very well as my boosted flying units would in the end easily killed off the remaining enemy units.
LESSON LEARNT
While rulesets are meant to restrict your battle lineup, it is important to also not look at rulesets as restrictions alone. Certain rulesets if used correctly can aid you instead of restricting you. For example in the battle above, I made used of Earthquake to kill off my Martyr units to trigger Martyr to then boost my Flying units.
