This week's splinterlands community engagement challenge is all about favorite strategies. I have written before about some of my favorite low-mana cost lineups and recently I have been experimenting with other low-mana cost lineups. After a few experiments, I have found one that has a good win rate in Silver I and Gold III.
The Core Lineup
Summoner: Obsidian (Level 5) - $3.64
Leading the team is Obsidian, who grants all friendly monsters +1 magic damage. This buff synergizes with all those great Earth unit magic monsters, and especially in low-mana cap battles, turning one magic damage into two magic damage can prove pivotal.
Tank: Hill Giant (Level 6) - $0.80
While the Hill Giant is not lauded enough, it is an underrated tank. Yes, it lacks defensive abilities like Shield or Void, but with high health (about its mana cost), decent speed and Stun ability, it justifies its position in the team and low-cost battles, it punches above its weight.
Healing Support: Goblin Psychic (Level 6) - $1.50
Hill Giant is the meat shield of the team, but Goblin Psychic is the MVP. Its role on the team is quite simple -- healing (through Tank Heal) Hill Giant so that it can continue soaking damage as long as possible, prevent any opposition monsters from healing (via Affliction) and finally, synergizing with Obsidian magic damage buff by delivering three magic damage, which in low-mana cost battles is a game changer.
If the Hill Giant is the meat shield, the Goblin Psychic is the lifeblood of this team. At six mana, this card is a dual-purpose powerhouse:
- Tank Heal ensures the Hill Giant can keep soaking damage for as long as possible.
- Affliction prevents enemy monsters from healing, a game-changing ability in gritty battles.
- With Obsidian's magic buff, the Goblin Psychic delivers a hefty three magic damage per attack, making it a critical damage dealer as well as a support unit.
Together this trio of monsters, form an effective and simple team, capable of doing damage across Silver and Gold leagues.
Battle Highlights
I expected my opponent to for Thaddius Brood, a summoner that directly counters Obsidian by reducing magic damage and health. Rounding the opposition's team as the Halfling Refugee and Cursed Windeku. I am starting to encounter Halfling Refugee increasingly in Modern battles and go figure -- at one mana cost doing three melee damage, it is a no-brainer. Cursed Windeku is another staple melee monster in low-mana cap battles with its ten health, three melee damage and Thorns ability which effectively deals another two damage in return.
Right as the battle began, Hill Giant was under the assault. Luckily, Goblin Psychic's Tank Heal proceeded to allow it to hang on and deliver a finishing blow to Halfling Refugee early on in round two. With Halfling Refugee down, Cursed Windeku stepped up to the first slot. The Hill Giant absorbed a brutal hit from Cursed Windeku, dropping its health down to just one health. However, Goblins Tank Heal came in clutch again delivering a perfectly timed heal which restored Hill Giant's health just enough to survive another round. That single heal proved to be a game-changer. The Hill Giant and Goblin Psychic both dealt blows to Cursed Windeku which proved to be devasting and eking out a satisfying victory.
Concluding Thoughts
At less than $6 total (at the time of the article), the beauty of its strategy is its accessibility and versatility for new players and old players alike. What is your go-to lineup for low-mana battles? Let me know in the comments below.
