Hello and welcome to my blog!
Splinterlands is one of the most popular web3 games on Hive and in general with many active players and every once in a while I get asked by new players to give some tips and advices on how to start their Splinterlands journey. Well, this weeks social media challenge is about that only- sharing some tips for new players. If you want to read the challenge post, click here
Splinterlands is a strategy trading Card game which allows the players to battle against real players and each battle poses some challenges tough decisions to take, and one must build a good lineup with the limited resources and constraints provided in the battle and come out on top. Due to large number of availableabilities and the unique cards present in the game, it is not an easy game to master and becomes overwhelming for beginners.
Know where to look for help!
There are so many helpful communities on Discords and joining them will help you. You will find a lot of information as guides, gameplay etc and at the same time you can ask your question to the experienced players in the chats and there are always more than one person happy to help. The first place for you to go is the official SPL discord server. There are other platforms with similar groups available in different platforms. There are telegram groups, even whatsapp groups and a lot of Youtube Playlist available for you to learn and seek help from. My journey started with Youtube and took a big step forward when I got into the Discord server and interacted with some veteran players who guided me and answered all my queries.
Join Events and Tournaments
There are a lot of events, challenges and tournaments that runs every day. Some are just contests and challenges like the one I am writing. One doesn't have to be pro at them to take part and start contributing. One can take part in tournaments which is not for beginners in my opinion but at the same time you can see top players compositions, strategies and plans. My moto is "You either Win or you Learn, there is no defeat unless you stop trying."
Also, join a guild and take part in Brawls which is going to help you earn extra rewards like SPS and Merits. Just look out for opportunities and ask around to join guilds. Having a guild can develop you in many ways, one will improve in both the social and competitive side of the game.
Play to learn, not just Play to Win
I have talked about this a lot of times to a lot of beginners and it's not just applicable to this game but with other web3 games too. If you focus too much on the rewards and outputs you will not be able to get the efficient learning. Just like more things focus on the process and learning one thing at a time and improve on it, it can be learning just one good strategy at a time or knowing the strengths and weakness of just a few cards but focus on learning. At first you will be bound to lose more than you win and it is fine as long as you can identify what made you lose that specific battle. Each loss is an opportunity to do better and learn from it. And the rewards will come in naturally.
Overcoming some beginners challenges!
Getting into a new game is always a big challenge, especially when it is a big strategic card game like splinterlands with so much to offer and learn. Like many newbies, I faced some challenges of my own too. I had no one to get help from at first as I was not referred by anyone and kind of found this game by my own through google search. I had no idea where to ask for help and learned a lot from online resources like watching some Youtube videos and guides. But once I found the posts on Hive blockchain about this games it all started to get easier and easier. I could read other people's strategy and take a few things from them.
It all started to get a lot better when I joined the splinterlands discord and found a few helpful people who shared their own experiences of the game and shared a lot of helpful advice. This shows the power of community building!
Another challenge I faced was the lack of funds to spend on buying and renting cards which got taken care of when I started to blog about the game on HIVE and that fixed a lot of problems for me. So, yeah... blogging can be a good source so you can invest back your earning into the game and grow your account.
So, to summarise, here are all the tips would be useful.
- Practice, practice and practice (There is no shortcut to this, you just have to play the game for longer)
- Don't get too attached to the result of the game and focus more on learning the strategies (As I said before, focus on the process not just on the results)
- Join communities on discords, telegrams, Hive etc (If you are reading this, you have joined at least one of them. Explore more!)
- Share your experience with others and blog on Hive. Also, take part in challenges like this (When you write and explain your strategies you will understand it much better, just try it.)
- Rent your way up if you can't afford to buy cards (No need to buy $150 card just rent them for much cheaper and see if it helps)
- Watch replays and don't skip them (Especially when you are trying new strategies and units)
- Go to the help section of Splinterlands website and read all the resources!
- Take part in tournaments and other challenges.
- Join a Guild and play Brawls, which will help you get extra rewards.
- Make friends and HAVE FUN! (This is the most important of them all)
