Hello there! @saydie here, playing Splinterlands everyday!

Rebellion was the 5th major set that was introduced into Splinterlands and just like the previous sets, it has introduced a new batch of abilities to the game, expanding the variety of strategies and card synergies that we can use to win our battle. That is why it is important for us to familiarize with how this new abilities work.

And so, with the previous weeks, I did started my in depth review on the Rebellion abilities, and for this week's post, I will take a look on the Lookout Ability.

What is Lookout Ability?

ability_lookout.png

Lookout is an ability that reduces the damage an adjacent unit receives from Sneak, Snipe and Opportunity by one. At the same time, if the opponent uses cards with Ambush ability, Lookout will reduce the damage that any unit of your team will receive by 50% regardless of their position. On the other hand, the effects on Lookout does not stack, meaning even if you place a unit between two cards with Lookout ability, it will still only reduce one damage.

Prons

  • If your team is the victim of an Ambush attack, a Unit with Lookout will reduce damage for the entire team by 50%.

  • When the adjacent Unit protected with Lookout dies, the newly adjacent Unit will gain protection from Lookout.

  • Protection from Lookout cannot be Cleansed.

  • Notable Interactions with other abilities.

    • -1 damage on attacks from Sneak, Snipe and Opportunity units.

    • Lookout does stack with Shield and Void and can potentially reduce the damage in zero.

Cons

  • Lookout does not stack on another Lookout.

  • Damage from Scattershot is unaffected from Lookout.

  • Using units with Expose ability can use to remove the protection from Lookout.

Cards with Lookout Ability

Common

Rare

Epic

Legendary

As of the moment, there were a total of 7 cards with the Lookout ability, 1 of which are common, 2 of which is rare, 3 of which are Epic and 1 Legendary. Aside from that, there is also 1 Rebellion summoner that has the ability to to give the Lookout ability on 1 unit during the tactics round.

Battle Showcase:

Battle 1: Ujurak Mystic

Due to Silence, most of the opponent damage on this magic battle was was reduced to 1 with the exception of a few cards but upon adding Lookout to the mix, the damage that was inflicted was further reduced. at the same time, when Runemancer Kye attacks Nalara Gainek, its attack was reduced to zero following this interactions.

Runemancer Kye attacks with 2 damage --> Void cuts the damage in half (2/2=1) --> Lookout reduce the damage to zero ((2/2=1)-1=0).

Battle 2: Satha Toledo and Thanalorian Blade

Meanwhile, in this battle, I use both Thanalorian Blade and Satha Toledo by which are next to each other, allowing both to be protected by Each other's Lookout though the damage that was reduced was still the same. As you can see, Dalthin Ironhood attacks Immolation, it only deals 1 samage, this is because the 3 damage was divided by two with Shield minus one damage from Lookout.

3 damage/2 (Shield) = 2 (rounded up) - 1 (Lookout)= 1 damage

On the other hand, when Dalthin Ironhood attacks Satha Toledo, it deals 2 damage as it does not have Shield that reduces the damage.

3 damage - 1 (Lookout) = 2

Battle 3: Akane

In this battle, I used Akane and give Doctor Blight the Lookout ability, reducing the damage to Djinn Oshannus and with the opponent using Ambush, having Lookout reduced the damage my units will received by 50% though in this case, my card has Forcefield and supposedly will reduce any damage that is 5 or more to 1. So as it seems, Lookout overrides Forcefield during Ambush resulting for Djinn Oshannus to received 3 damage each from Venka the Vile and Jared Scar.

Lookout on Ambush: 7 damage * 50% = 4 (Rounded Up)- 1 (Lookout) = 3
I may be wrong with this interactions and will need some clarifications on the support team.

But after the Ambush Stage, the effect of Lookout returns back to normal with Jared Scar only inflicting 1 damage to Djinn Oshannus thought the same thing can be achieved since it has the Forcefield ability.

Closing

As a new ability that comes with Rebellion, Lookout works more as a support ability to reduce damage on Sneak, Snipe and Opportunity which can take down your units with the weakest health or most vulnerable cards. Though the ability does not stack there are many rulesets where the ability will have the most use case but before using it, one must also consider how it interacts with other abilities.

Thank you and see you at the next post.

I don't have many monsters with the lookout ability in my collection and that explains why my win rate drops when the opponent uses it. Time to add some cards with lookout.
Cheers!

yeah... 1 less damage can be a matter of win or loss in battles.
