Tournaments in Splinterlands offer an exciting way to challenge your skills, improve your strategy, and win valuable prizes. Whether you're a seasoned player or new to the tournament scene, this guide will help you get the most out of your tournament experience.

Tournament Modes: Modern vs. Wild

Tournaments are divided into two main modes:

Modern: You can only use cards from the most recent editions. This mode levels the playing field by limiting access to older, powerful cards, making it easier for newer players with smaller collections to compete.

Wild: In this mode, you can use any available cards, with some restrictions based on the specific tournament. Wild tournaments often favor players with large and diverse collections.

If you have a bigger and more versatile collection, Wild tournaments can give you an edge. If your collection is more limited, stick to Modern tournaments to keep things more balanced. Also, consider card rental costs, some of the older, but very powerful cards can be a great deal in the rental market, while the most powerful cards in the Modern tournaments could be really expensive to rent since everyone wants those for earning more SPS in the Modern Ranked Play.

Collection Power Requirements

Each tournament requires you to meet a specific Collection Power (CP) threshold to participate. This requirement differs between Modern and Wild tournaments. Keep in mind that Gladiator cards and cards wagered on land do not count toward your Collection Power.

Before registering for a tournament, check your current Collection Power. If you don’t meet the requirement, consider renting cards to temporarily boost your Collection Power and qualify.

Types of Tournaments

Open Tournaments
These tournaments provide all participants with the same set of cards, placing a greater emphasis on skill and strategy rather than collection size. It's a great way to level the playing field and test your tactical prowess.

You can join Open Tournaments to improve your strategy, as everyone has access to the same cards. This removes any card advantage, focusing on your decision-making skills.

Anytime Tournaments
These types of tournaments used to be my favorite when I participated in the tournaments they allow you to submit your teams at your convenience within a designated time window. This time window is usually 24 hours per round but you should check the terms of your specific tournament and verify This flexibility is perfect for players with varying schedules.

Time management is crucial. Be sure to submit your teams within the allowed timeframe or your battles will result in automatic losses.

Single Elimination
In this intense format, once you lose, you're out. Players must register and “check in” before the tournament starts to be eligible.

Be ready at the exact start time and "check in" promptly. Prepare in advance by researching opponents to increase your chances.

Sit-and-Go Tournaments
These tournaments begin as soon as the minimum number of players registers, offering a quick and fast-paced tournament experience.

If you’re short on time, Sit-and-Go tournaments are a great way to play quickly. They’re ideal for those who want shorter, more immediate tournaments.

Strategy Tips for Success

Watch and Learn
One of the best ways to improve in Splinterlands tournaments is by observing how more experienced players navigate their matches. Pay attention to their team compositions and tactics, especially in Open Tournaments, where the cards are the same for everyone.

Study high-ranking players’ games and adapt their tactics to your playstyle. There’s always something to learn from their approaches, even in defeat.

Manage Your Resources
Tournaments often offer valuable rewards in the form of DEC, SPS, or cards. Take advantage of every opportunity to participate, even if you don’t win initially. The experience and insight you gain will be worth it.

Be sure to manage your time, collection, and stamina efficiently. Use rented cards if needed to maximize your performance and improve your chances.

Mindset for Tournament Success

Ultimately, Splinterlands tournaments are about enjoying the game and learning from each match. Whether you win or lose, you’ll gain valuable experience, sharpen your strategic thinking, and learn more about how other players build their teams.

Don’t let losses get you down. Every defeat offers valuable insights into your own playstyle and the strategies of others. Keep evolving your strategy and you’ll improve with each tournament.

With modes that accommodate both seasoned collectors and newer players, and a variety of tournament types to choose from, there’s always an opportunity to test your skills and enjoy the competitive side of the game.
