How's it going Battle Mages? With the division of two Ranked Battle formats namely Wild and Modern possibly coming real soon, I know it's not just me who's considering their options now on which format to choose or if it's going to be worth playing both when the update arrives. So this season, I weighed in and looked at the small list of older cards I currently have access to that can only be used in the Wild format like the alpha, beta, promo and older reward cards, how they helped me out in performing better these past few seasons and whether they are enough for me to consider playing this format.

But first, let's take a look at my performance this season. Very similar to the last one. Again I reached the 2.8k rating,
the highest was slightly lower than last season but I didn't drop and actually finished much higher ending at 184, which is the highest rank I've ever finished a season at.
Although my deck mostly consists of Chaos Legion, new reward cards and the starter Untamed, I couldn't have performed this well were it not with the help of a few older cards which make me think and consider playing in the Wild Format.
Top of the list is the very first card I bought in Splinterlands which is Delwyn Dragonscale. Before, I didn't really get to use him much, but eversince I got to pull Chaos and Void Dragons, together with the Alpha cards, Red and Gold Dragons that @pladozero delegated to me, Delwyn has become one of, if not the most used summoners I have. Unfortunately, the feature of Splinterstats that would show the top card usage seem to not work anymore so we would not be able to confirm that and check the numbers. I hope they bring this feature back.
Perhaps even more frequently used are the Furious Chicken and Creeping Ooze. Even with the advent of the 0 mana legendary cards, it's still good for me to have these two and squeeze them in when I get those low mana battles. They could be a life savers.
There's also the Beta card I won from one of the raffles at futuredecscord, Enchanted Pixie. She's very useful in squeezing in with my Delwyn or Obsidian line up, especially in the low mana Earthquake ruleset, so I keep her despite being only level 1.
I mentioned earlier the Alpha Dragons delegated to me by Plado, and aside from them, there's also the Frost Giant which I find useful with Kelya to counter melee (combo'd with Disintegrator) or range attackers with the use of Quix.
Finally, 3 more older reward cards I'd definitely miss in the Modern Format are the Wood Nymph - I abuse her together with Goblin Psychic for that double tank heal, also won this in futuredecscord raffle; Exploding Dwarf - I often use either in Equalizer or rulesets that allow melee to attack from anywhere combo with Exploding Rats; and Naga Fire Wizard - I usually pick her in Reverse Speed ruleset when I expect more melee to be used. See my Weekly Battle Challenge entry for this week as an example. Yet another card I won from our guild's discord and this was was raffled off for free!
Of course we still have 6 Legendary Summoners to be released that will be part of the Chaos Legion set and perhaps their arrival will change the landscape and my overall strategy, assuming I get lucky to have them, and could potentially make me either use more, less or even stop using these older cards. Plus it's been announced that 10 new reward cards are expected to be added as well soon which I'll have better chances of acquiring, and they could also affect my decision, which isn't unthinkable considering that there are the likes of my level 1 Gelatinous Cube which I rarely use now that there are other viable options for me to select instead of it.

Very bad showing for me in the tournaments. I haven't been keen in joining a lot lately except for the N00b Kobold ones. Since I only use my own cards now, I no longer do well on the tourneys that allow all editions so I focused more on those that just have Chaos Legion and Reward, which is my stronger suit.

I got one common gold foil and 3 regular foil epics which isn't bad. However, no packs this time in EoS rewards.

As expected, I still did not rent anything this season but I actually rented out a few of my cards since I had some extra Collection Power than needed for Silver 1 and I earned about 500 DEC from rentals because of that.

Still a slow but steady increase in SPS and it's close to reaching 2k again after I decided to unstake some and use them to buy Chaos Legion packs. Under 4 months to go before Airdrop ends so gotta make sure I get as much as possible which will also help out in getting not only SPS that will be used for purchasing the next mini edition, Riftwatchers when it arrives sometime this year, but also the vouchers that are also going to be required for that.
I'm still not sure if I will be playing both Modern and Wild Format or just focused on Modern and maybe sell off the older cards I have to help level up my newer cards or buy those I don't have. If I decide to go full modern, I will certainly miss using the cards I highlighted above and it will take some getting used to not having them at my disposal. I guess I'll wait and see how things are going to turn out when the time comes that the Modern format is introduced.
Right now we are actually already playing in the "Wild Format" and I'm doing well enough, but the news I heard that even though they will have separate reward pools, they'd be sharing the same Energy Capture Rate, makes me think that it's better if I just choose to play and focus on one. I think I'm leaning more on going Modern, but we'll see what happens. How about you, Battle Mages, which format will you be playing on?
