Wreaking Havoc and Destruction

Share Your Battle: Dragons

This is my first time writing for a generic theme! There are lots of awesome dragons in Splinterlands and it'll be hard to choose just one. I've listed some in my must rent series like Chaos Dragon and Fire Spitter which are both my special favourites. If you'd like to check the list:

Legendary Cards - All splinters included
Epic Cards - All splinters included

The Fire Spitter may not have fancy abilities but it hits like a tank! For this post, I'd like to showcase the Chaos Dragon which always wreak havoc and mayhem in the battlefield.

Where It All Starts

The Chaos Realm has preyed upon many a world, opening rifts in time and space to invade the lands and take from its people. When they attacked Praetoria and the Splinterlands, it was first thought that the minions were compelled through the portal for their fear of the dark shade that lurked beyond the gate, the shadowed image of Uul. Eventually though, when the last of the armies stepped through, there came such a prodigious monster that at first, none could believe it was real. A nightmare dragged forth into reality.

As it flew through the spinning vortex, the Chaos Dragon let forth a violent shriek, so loud that it was felt in the far reaches of every Splinter. The people of Praetoria fell to their knees, terror taking the strength from their legs and the courage from their hearts. For an army of monsters can be fought, the land defended with righteous fervor. But when even the invading hordes are fleeing before such a beast, what hope can there be? The answer is none when the eater of worlds has arrived, the true devourer of existence.

Surely such a thing couldn’t be the puppet of Uul? How could anyone command a creature that has flown from one cosmos to another, feeding upon alien planets? But it was his most potent being, one that existed before time had conceived the very gift of life itself.

What hope is there when faced with such monster? A monster so large it can blot out the sun. The Chaos Dragon pretty much annihilated the Order of the Shield with just one breath of necrotic energy.

Plate armor instantly dissolved in the caustic discharge, skin and flesh bubbling beneath before putrefying into liquid filth. Not a soul was left standing, not one single soldier.

Poor Shieldbearers, knights and mages...

The Stats

So what does the Chaos Dragon has to offer?

image.png

The Chaos Dragon, which costs 14 mana, already has 3 magic damage, 3 speed, 4 armour and 10 HP at base level. It comes with flying and scattershot abilities. It gains blast and blind abilities at level 2 and 3 respectively while its magic damage increases to 4 at level 4 (MAX).

Its innate ability, scattershot, almost always guarantee you that your attack will land somewhere in the middle. Coupled with its blast ability, this dragon's magic attacks suddenly become deadly especially when most monsters to not have the void ability to counter the damage.

The blind ability is nice to have and will help your team dodge some attacks but is really not necessary if you only want to rent a level 2 in Gold league to minimize your rental expenses.

How do you make the Chaos Dragon shine? Here are my top pick summoners for this:

Summoner Comment
Delwyn provides great synergy with the Chaos Dragon since he (?) will boost its magic damage. In the gold league where I normally play, the attack will be increased to four and the blast damage to 2. That will obviously punish your opponent.
Though I haven't personally used Byzantine Kitty for the Chaos Dragon, I can only imagine the fun when the two are paired. You really won't be needing the True Strike ability, but the increased speed and tank heal are just OP. The tank heal will ensure that your tank remains alive longer and your Chaos Dragon will be able to keep pounding on the backlines.

Well.. the summoners above provide good synergy but it doesn't really matter as long as you're able to summon the Chaos Dragon to the battlefield. I personally use Quix the Devious and Camila Sungazer since they are cheaper to rent. My poor broke self can only afford those two.

And which rule sets best suit the Chaos Dragon?

The Chaos Dragon will pretty much work with any rule set except for the obvious (little league, lost magic, rise of the commons, etc). What's important when using the Chaos Dragon is how you position it in your line-up. You'd want to place this dragon somewhere that it can continue taking advantage of its scattershot.

My lineup
Position Card Mana Cost Comment
Summoner 4 As mentioned above, I normally use Quix or Camila since they're the cheaper options. Quix provides debuff in both ranged attacks and speed. The former is situational.
Position 1 - Tank 10 I kinda predicted that the opponent will not be using magic so I opted for Grund who's able to hit multiple times. 2x 4 damage is enough to deal some serious damage while it gets the opportunity to attack again if it's able to kill the enemy.
Position 2 - Pseudo Tank 11 What's the best partner for a double striking Grund? A double striking reach monster! I should probably write something about double/triple/quadruple tapping.
Position 3 - Healer 6 Since I intended to sustain my Grund so it can keep hitting without restraint, a healer is a must. A healer, most of the times, increase your chances of winning. The Goblic Psychic's affliction in turn prevents your opponent from healing.
Position 4 - Triage 4 I planned to add the Mycelic Slipspawn in this lineup to receive the brunt of the opponent's attacks. So pretty much the reasoning for the Goblin Psychic, I added a triage monster to sustain the Mycelic Slipspawn. It may seen like I'm not maximizing the mana cap but the triage and protect abilities are invaluable to this lineup.
Position 5 - Backline hunter 14 It main purpose is to soften the enemy's backline so that when they get to the front, they'll be ripe for picking. It's a pity the ruleset is Equalizer otherwise the Chaos Dragon will be wiping out this enemy team in no time.
Position 6 - Punching Bag 9 Absorbs the damage from the enemy team. Its purpose is to draw enemy fire away from the tank. Its forcefield ability ensures it doesn't get beaten up so badly when receiving 5+ damage.
Rounds Breakdown

image.png

Round 1. The Chaos Dragon goes to work early removing the shields of Grum, Radiated Brute and Serpentine Spy thanks to its blast. Grund and the Carnage Titan started pummeling Grum right away with their double strike while the Mycellic Slipspawn's soaking all the enemy damage and gets poisoned.

image.png

Round 2. The Chaos Dragon unfortunately hits the tank (1 in 6 chances) and Grum falls few moments later. The Mycelic Slipspawn's able to survive due to the Queen's timely heal. The Goblin Psychic's also doing a phenomenal job in keeping Grund alive.

image.png

Round 3. The Chaos Dragon again hits the tank (CMON!!!!!!) allowing the Carnage Titan to bring it down to just 3 HP and within the kill range for Grund. Grund takes the kill and his trample activates but misses on the next target. The Mycelic Slipspawn gets poisoned but remained alive thanks to the triage heal. Healing for everyone! 😇

image.png

Round 4. The Chaos Dragon hits the correct target this time hitting the backline and removing the remaining Divine Shields. Victory is pretty much in the bag. The Serpentine Spy falls. My team's still alive and unscathed except for the Mycelic Slipspawn that's hanging by a thread and just sustained by Queen Mycelia's healing.

image.png

Round 5. Uraeus falls while Doctor Blight is down to 1 HP. Seriously, why prolong the agony?

image.png

Round 6. My Chaos dragon fittingly ends the battle. Everyone on my team managed to survive.

Looking back, Grum Fireblade was actually able to hit my Grund with 10 damage (!!!) in the first round but was rendered useless since the Grund's armour is still up. Thanks Queen Mycelia! 👸 Also, the enemy attacks were missing as well thanks to the Chaos Dragon's blind ability.

Final Words

Hope you guys picked up few tricks from the battle above with Chaos Dragon.
This card is one of the cards I always rent. You can get a level 3 for under 30 DEC so there's no reason for you not to include it in your rent list. Again, you won't be able to always put it in your line-up due to its high mana cost but in the instances that you can, you won't be regretting it. Also, remember that positioning is key. You'd want the Chaos Dragon to be able to keep using its Scattershot. Chaos Dragon as tank loses its value.

Til next time folks!

Epic lineup. Mycelia and Chaos Dragon on Level 3? Wow. I only play in Silver Leagues so I only got the Dragon at level 2, and it's already crazy strong with 5 to 7 damage. It's always a good addition to the team for large mana cap battles. Great post!

Yup, you get to play it more often when they introduced larger mana cap battles. :)
