Here we are again at another instalment of Reimagining with AI. For this week, let's try something different. So far, I've covered Lorna Shine, Grum Flameblade and Pelacor Conjurer. I was thinking of doing something totally non-human or humanoid-like and Splinterlands definitely has a wide variety on that category. But there's one in particular that seems to be an iconic monster in the game as I see it very often. That card that I'm highlighting this week is Rexxie.
Rexxie's design is very cartoony. Despite having a menacing look and rows of serrated teeth, it has a cute appeal and would definitely make a great stuffed toy inspiration. And although it's a direct depiction of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, it's head also resembles that of a crocodile. There's nothing much to describe for the AI text prompt. I'm sure putting "Green Tyrannosaurus Rex" would have good results.
Rexxie's stats and abilities are pretty straightforward too. It's right on point with what a T-Rex would have been like. It has a strong melee attack since it's got a huge set of chompers. It also has high health since it is a huge creature. High speed because one does not simply outrun a T-Rex. And of course, the perfect ability for it would be trample.
Well, my bad. I thought this was going to be a simple task for the AI. It sure got the "giant" prompt right with mountains in the background to scale how big it is. But what I got instead was an abomination that would fit right into Silent Hill. Look at those two conflicting legs that appear like they want to go their own separate ways. There's also the classic eyeless head that I often encounter with AI generated artwork. This one is definitely a nightmare fuel.
I tried to run the same text prompt as I cannot accept that the AI will botch such a simple instruction. And what I got this time turned out great. It looks menacing with its golden eyes and sharp teeth. I like the added facial patterns and the scales on its short arms. Its positioning also matches Rexxie's original art so I might choose this one for the final card art. But to make sure, I'll also run two more AI renditions to see what we can get.
Oh, wow. I tried to make it simpler by just placing "Green Tyrannosaurus Rex" and what I got was a horrendous abomination much, much worse than my first attempt. Talk about two mouths to feed, why does it have two? It's like the AI was thinking of two different designs but decided to just mash it up together into one creature. This reminds me of the Yu-Gi-Oh card Slifer the Sky Dragon but it doesn't work well here.
So when simple text prompts don't work well, let's try something more specific. "Green Tyrannosaurus Rex with Serrated Teeth and Menacing Look" and it sure delivered on the "menacing look" part. Just when I thought it couldn't get any weirder, I got this art. Luckily, I'm doing this blog in the morning and I have the rest of the day to erase it from memory.
Out of the four AI generated artwork, the second one was definitely the best. Once again, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I can safely say that the it's still a hit-or-miss when it comes to AI. But it does make impressive outputs once it gets it right.
