This morning I realized that it's been awhile since I shared any of my older US coin collection. The Goddess of Liberty used to show up on all US coins in the early days of the country, and rightly so as the US had declared independence from England not long before. I've always enjoyed the dollar and half dollar coins because of their Liberty design and size, but I've picked up some smaller denominations over the years as well.
This one is one I picked up for a good deal many years ago, and is very interesting because it's not a nickel (which appeared in 1866), but a "half dime" and is made of 90% silver. This has the Seated Liberty design which was a beautiful and long lived feature on coins from the United States. There were many variants made from 1837 until 1873, some of which are rare and very expensive. This one sadly is not one of them!

I have always love the Seated Liberty design, and the Liberty coinage in general. This is a nice little coin and still has some nice details, and I'm glad I have it. I think I only own a couple of these as I never actively collected them. I preferred the larger denominations. It would be fun to collect an entire series of these but there are some very rare variants and proofs that are extremely expensive. I'm not nearly rich enough to even consider it!
Christian Gobrecht
Born in 1785 in Hanover, Pennsylvania to a German immigrant father. He apprenticed in engraving in Manheim, Pennsylvania but moved to Philadelphia with his sights set on engraving for the US Mint. He became the second engraver of the mint in 1835 after the Chief Engraver suffered a stroke, essentially doing the job of Chief Engraver without the title. He engraved the Seated Liberty design based on drawing by Thomas Sully for the Golbrect dollar that was made in small quantities from 1836-1839. Here's one of the few remaining in excellent condition:

This design became the Seated Liberty design on many US coins from 1836 until 1891. Golbrecht died in 1844 but his design lived on for another 45 years in US coins. It's a shame that Liberty was ever removed form US coinage and in my opinion should return and replace all the president coins... Just my opinion! It feels like president worship instead of savoring and loving Liberty which we lose more and more each year.
