What a Monday for all of us Bitcoin holders! Finally breaking through that $100,000 barrier again and hopefully for good this time. It would be nice to see a shot past the moon, maybe to Saturn?
As a kid I grew up watching the old reruns of the original Star Trek TV show and saw the Star Wars movies n the theater. I always dreamed of travelling through space, but like most of us I was born too soon to see interstellar travel. As I was browsing some of the new coin options produced by the island nation of Niue I came across some new coins that made me think back to those dreams as kid. To stand on another planet or moon and look out into space.
The new coins that are being produced for 2025 have a view of the planet Saturn from it's moon Titan. These are really pretty coins and produced for us want to astronauts. They have one in gold and one in silver, although I kind of like the gold version because of the colors! Have a look:

Version in silver:

Both of these coins are one Troy ounce of either gold of silver at .9999 purity of each. The minting is limited to 99 of the gold and 999 of the the silver. They are colorized which for me is usually a huge turnoff, but these actually came out kind of cool. The sky color is so different between the two, I kind of like the gold one more with the red sky, I'm not sure why. My only big disappointment is the obverse of the coin with the monarch, I'm not a huge fan of monarchs on modern coins. That's just me, I'm sure other people love it!
I think the either of these coins will appreciate in value with time, especially the gold with such a low mintage. All of us who grew up watching Star Trek and Star Wars are very likely buyers, and I think it will sell out pretty quickly. The gold one isn't in my budget ($3,695), but I'll try to pick up a silver one ($115) as it's a lot less expensive and I'm not rich enough to buy an ounce of gold at the moment.
And now some information on the celestial bodies displayed on the coins:
Titan
nai.nasa.gov
Infared image of Titan by the Cassini Spacecraft
Titan is Saturn's largest moon and is obscured by a thick atmosphere of nitrogen and methane with hydrocarbons causing a dense haze. Until the Cassini spacecraft took infared images of the moon we knew relatively little about it. As it turns out it has oceans of water mixed with ammonia, and a rocky/ icy land surface. Overall it is the most earthlike celestial body in the solar system, but temperatures are much colder at 94 Kelvin (-179 C, -290 F). Too cold for my blood...
Saturn
apod.nasa.gov
Saturn is the sixth planet in our solar system and is composed of a rocky core surrounded by gas. It's considered a gas giant much like Jupiter. One of the most prominent features are it's rings, composed of ice and dust. It's atmosphere is primarily hydrogen and to a lesser extent helium. As a kid I remember being fascinated by it's rings and colors. Turns out the colors were not quite as vibrant as I had believed when Cassini took some clear pictures.
Maybe one day we'll be able to travel out to these places as a species. But I think most of us will be long since gone sadly...
That will wrap up today's post. Just seeing those coins does bring me back to dreaming as a kid of being on another planet or moon. What awesome coins even with the colorization!
