Nineties Friday, and it's Friday the 13th!

in #hive-1390704 days ago

Many long years ago I embarked on an adventure that shaped the rest of my life. After high graduation in the early 1990's I decided to seek out some interesting jobs to earn a living. One of my favorite activities when I was younger was skiing and later I got into snowboarding and it was a blast! A friend of mine told me he planned to head to South America to be a ski instructor in Chile, and I decided to do the same. It was one of the best moves I ever made!

In June I headed to Chile and knowing almost no Spanish I started to learn the language while living in a new country. There I found lifelong friends and it changed the course of my life. After the ski season had ended I had been offered a position in Santiago and I took it. I spent most of the next decade in South America and the Caribbean, and I would encourage any young person to do the same. Take chances, travel, push yourself even if you don't know the language. I now speak Spanish as well as if not better than English, depending on the day!

That 1990's experience leads directly into my post of the day. It's time for a Nineties Friday post because I have missed the last couple of weeks. Today I'll kick off with a very cool contraption that I owned back in the day, the Sony Sports Discman. This was the replacement to the old cassette Walkman that I had for years. What was nice is this had shock protection so bumps wouldn't cause it to skip while playing. I used mine until wore out! Finding one in working condition today might be hard, but technology is leaving disks behind little by little. The digital versions often sound better and don't scratch up! lol

Happy Friday the 13th everyone!

This series ran from 1987 until 1990 so it counts as a 90's series! Micki and Ryan inherit and antique store and start selling the stock from the shop. Then they learn they have been selling dangerous cursed items to people and begin the quest to retrieve them all. I remember watching this show and it was pretty good, although I haven't seen an episode in years. But it's a perfect for this Friday the 13th! Couldn't find any promo reels but here is the opening scene for the show:

Today's songs are ones that I recall hearing frequently after I first arrived in Chile, so all very early 1990's songs in English and some in Spanish.

Guns N' Roses

hungarytoday.hu

Guns N' Roses formed in Los Angeles in 1985. It was a merger of bands L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose. At the time they didn't know they were destined for superstardom, but that's what they became. I remember when I was in Chile they were on the radio all the time, GNR was a very popular band in South America. "You Could Be Mine" was huge in Chile at the time and I even saw them play live in Santiago, Chile in 1992 I believe!

Metallica

fanpop.com

Metallica was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1981. They produced great music throughout the decade but when they released their self title "Black" album they became mainstream rock stars. I think most everyone knows the song "Enter Sandman", but I'll throw a twist in here. Instead of Metallica playing it I'll share Volbeat performing the song with Lars Ulrich (Metallica's drummer) on the drum kit. This is really good cover for the old 1991 classic!

Daniela Romo

revistafama.com

This Mexican actor and singer started her career very young and was a popular artist by the time she was twenty. She had a string of hits throughout the eighties and into the early 1990's. I recall while I was in Chile this was a song that was on the radio all of time. This one is "Todo, todo, todo".

Myriam Hernandez

corazon.cl

This Chilean singer took the Latin music world by storm when she released her first self titled album in 1988. This was followed by and even bigger album in 1990 called "Dos" (Two) with multiple hits and several number one chart toppers. This one was very often on the radio back when I was first in Chile, it's "Peligrosos Amor" (Dangerous love).

Chayanne

telemundo.com

This singer from Puerto Rico started young in a group called Los Chicos than were competitors for the band Menudo at the time. He went solo in the late eighties, but his fifth album called "Tiempo De Vals" had numerous hit songs. The one I remember hearing frequently was "Completamente Enamorados" (Completely in Love):

Believe it or not, I think CD's are having a bit of a resurgence like vinyl. Maybe not quite as big, but I know many of the stores are starting deal with second hand CD's like they used to back in the day.

That's awesome! I know vinyl is huge again but didn't know that CD's were back in style!

Oh I remember that series. I'm with you it's been a long time since I've seen it. I did however watch quite a few of them.

I wasnt a huge GNR fan but I defintely head banged to Metallica, haha. Have a great weekend, man 😃

It was a fun show, but haven't seen it on TV in years. GNR and Metallica are awesome bands, I hope you aren't working this weekend!

No work this weekend but frozen rain and black ice conditions here. I have to find things to do at home mostly.

That really sucks! Much safer to stay at home, black ice and freezing rain are not fun at all!

How long did it take you to be able to speak some acceptable gringo Spanish, I feel so bad after 15 years in this country .... I can definitely get around but .....

Anyway I love the 13th, it allowed me to do a very special session, but that is beyond the point ...... thinking about playing some CDs later today because unlike my vinyl that has been thrown out as I did not take them Spain....I brought boxes filled with cds.

About six months I was doing okay, after a year it easy for me. I did the immersion method meaning I spoke relatively little English the whole time except when giving ski classes. There were Americans, Canadians, Europeans, etc on vacation that spoke English, that's why they were eager to hire me. Languages come easy to me though, everyone is different. How old were you when you moved to Spain?

That's why classic vinyl is so expensive, so much was thrown out. CDs were just easier. I still have a lot of both though I rarely use them anymore. My son will probably sell them for a fortune once I kick the bucket! lol

Your post made me play CDs this afternoon.

I was like 30 when I moved but no one around me spoke Spanish.

My ex wife being half Italian picked it up before I did and so I let her do the talking.

Guess I needed a divorce to at least get my basics in place.

Anyway I hope my Vinyl is still somewhere but if it was stored at my father in law......

Sorry to hear about the divorce.. That sucks... Been there twice! lol Immersion forces you to learn, so being single is probably a good thing! I should move to the south of France to work on my French and still be close to Barcelona! I hope that vinyl is still there, moving around has a bad habit of having things disappear. Hopefully it's still there to pick up.

I didn't know you actually spoke Spanish or maybe have a good understanding of the language. I agree to push it and this risks. It's one of the things I wished for, unfortunately I was born with a limiting condition.
Spending a decade in the Caribbean would have been such an experience

I'm glad I did all of it while I was young, it wouldn't be nearly as much fun now. Being born with your condition really sucks, genetics aren't very kind in many cases. As I've gotten older genetic issues have started showing up for me too, my family didn't have the best genetics I've come to find out!

The Walkman was superior in EVERY way.. and as far as the Spanish goes...

Tengo un gato en pantalones..

!pimp

It was because it didn't skip. The sport version helped some but it would still skip here and there. That cat must like those pants!

When you talk about the '90s and the fact that you were also around these parts of America, and that you speak Spanish better than English depending on the day, it makes me think about myself trying to write in English, of course using a translator, to communicate with you. By the way, I believe it was a bit challenging for you to learn Spanish with Chileans, they speak very fast and cut words a lot, they also have a sing-song way of speaking. I have a good Chilean friend, his parents fled from Chile, and sometimes I didn't understand him when he spoke the same Spanish as I do, but eventually I understood and sometimes even spoke like him.

The bands you are presenting today are fantastic, that era also reminds me a lot of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, Madonna, Michael Jackson, to name a few, but to be honest, you made me remember my beloved mother, one of her favorite singers is and will always be Daniela Romo, she knows all the songs.

By the way, today is Friday the 13th and my wife is celebrating her birthday, at the moment I am writing this comment, the electricity just came back on half an hour ago, we had over 18 hours without power.

You have no idea how much I wish for something like what happened in Panama when they defeated Noriega to happen in Venezuela.

Thanks! Glad you liked them! Happy Birthday to your wife! Too bad the power was out so long, but I hope you did something after. Infrastructure in dictatorships always tends to fall apart, Cuba can't keep the power on at all. The US won't do anything to intervene because of the Russian and Chinese support to Maduro. The only thing that would change that is if he really did try to invade Guyana for the oil fields. The world has changed a lot since the days of Noriega... Not at all good in my opinion.

One of the benefits of living in a small town in Colorado was family skiing!
The local town of Gunnison would allow kids to be dropped off by the school bus at the towns ski area.
If you were a local, a family pass was less than $100 a good place for kids to start learning this sport!
35 miles up valley was the real deal crested Butte! Both my boys learned to ski the steep and deep while still in grade school!😊

That's awesome! Colorado is a great place to ski. They were lucky to learn so young, it's harder to learn once you're an adult!

My youngest went on to be Ski patrol at Mt. Baker after we moved up here😊

Ski patrol is a fun job! Fortunately avalanches weren't common when I was part of that!

Avalanches are so dangerous...... Bill used to be on the dynamite patrol where they would set off avalanches to prevent larger ones!
Occasionally he said they would have a dud, and they had to come back in the spring to find the shell🙄
