A Review of Ecency Boost+

in #hive-14008410 months ago

The announcement that Ecency's Boost feature was being retired came as a bit of a surprise. This was allegedly due to complaints about it being a vote buying scheme. This was quickly followed by the announcement of a new feature: Boost+. We all know the complaints about the Boost feature are crap, because having a post boosted was never guaranteed. They were all manually curated, so low-effort and spam posts weren't given the time of day.

Boost+
The solution was to announce a different feature, called Boost+. For 1500 Ecency points, you can boost your own HP with a delegation of "200+ HP" for 7 days. I still have a bunch of points left, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

I paid my 1500 points.

As promised, I got my delegation.

I didn't have much free HP prior to the delegation. Even so, you can see with the vote value estimate it's not even a blip on the radar.

The Cost of Boost+ for 7 Days
Numbers don't lie, so I did the math.

You can buy 1200 Ecency points for $1.99, which equates to $0.0016583333 per point. So for 1500 points, you're paying $2.48749995. Now let's convert this to Hive. When I did the calculations for all of this, according to CoinGecko, Hive cost $0.3263 for 1 Hive.

So $2.4874995 ÷ $0.3263 = 7.6233525896 Hive for ~200 HP delegation for 7 days.

The Cost of Leasing 200 HP
Now let's look at the alternative option, which is to go to Hive Engine or DLease and submit a request to lease 200 HP from someone else. I went with 15% simply because right now leases on DLease are unfilled at a little over 10% APR. Considering many can curate for themselves or delegate to curation accounts and make that without having to bother with a middleman, I would need to sweeten the deal to make it worth their while.

So 15% APR ÷ 365 days × 200 HP × 7 days = 0.57534246 Hive for 7 days.

If you simply powered up 7 Hive every day for 29 days, you'd have a little over 200 HP to keep forever.

Sure, if you're getting Ecency points simply for posting, commenting, etc., then no biggie. If you're gifting points to a newbie so they can play around with a small amount of HP until they can build their own, I suppose it's okay. If you're looking at doing that, you could just delegate 200 HP of your own to them.

Final Thoughts
If you're actually paying for points or delegating with Ecency points as your primary motivation, you may want to look elsewhere. Other than promoting your post, the points have now become mostly useless due to the Boost feature being eliminated. Maybe I'll be proven wrong and they'll roll out some additional features that will make them worthwhile again. If they don't, all it would take is PeakD or someone else making an eye-appealing app with a similar Boost feature and you'd likely see a large exodus.

Thanks for doing the math!

The former post boost feature was mainly to automate what used to be the manual process of posting the links on discord.

There's a lot of downvotes due to the misconception. But bc of Ecency having a mobile app with a beautiful UI/UX, I don't think this big exodus would happen any time soon.

A lot of us who aren't aware of the boosting feature at first are here for the user experience. Some may use automations for upvotes and voting trails, but Ecency only give points to those who manually grind and use the app.

I also wish they can come up with a better reward to this grind than just merely delegating HPs. It's like grinding to grind more, which in the end feels pointless.

No problem. The Boost feature was nice for people who were just getting started.

Without a Boost-esque feature, I agree with you that there likely wouldn't be a large exodus. With the feature, however, Ecency then loses the major competitive advantage of its app.

The delegating never really appealed to me. I can use Hive Vote to help me automate some of my curation towards the people I regularly follow. Being paid in Hive and points doesn't really appeal considering there's no good use case now for the points.

I still can use ecency boost, and cant find this boost+

I believe they're rolling it out in their app first.

oh i see.. because the web one still looks like the previous one... no update nor change

I’ve never really used boost or ecency but I know it has a big user base.

I don’t know why boost is frowned upon. I guarantee it drove engagement. !PIZZA. I do like getting delegations.

I'm not sure why it's frowned upon either. I suppose some people just want to complain.

Because some orcas and whales made a lot of their HP from the bidbot days, so they have a very guilty conscious and thus crack down extra hard on anything resembling vote buying.

It was wild back in the day. I remember my first steem days when I learned about the bidbots. You could land some massive upvotes if you paid back in the day.

I just wish ecency didn't have to shut it down.

Yeah... what a dud. But I guess they felt like they had to do something. Maybe they will adjust it to be a better deal later.

!PIMP

We can certainly hope so. I just hope in the meantime people realize it's not a great deal and don't put any money into it.

Thanks for the PIMP! 😁

You must be killin' it out here!
@dbooster just slapped you with 5.000 PIMP, @bulliontools.
You earned 5.000 PIMP for the strong hand.
They're getting a workout and slapped 2/3 possible people today.

There's also 30 days for 6k points, and 90 days for 17k. A little better, I guess, but I'm not inclined to do the math. But as you say, if you use ecency and get points anyway, why not spend them on this? !LOLZ

I can't imagine those would be cost-effective options. I'll have to look into it a little later. They won't let you even look at pricing if you're already using Boost+.

Probably not worth it if you have to buy the points, no, even if the points get cheaper the larger amount you buy.
Possibly worth saving up points for the longer delegations? I stopped using ecency some time ago, so I have no idea how many points it's feasible to earn per day.

7 days for 1500 points ≈ 214.3p/day
30 days for 6000 points = 200p/day
90 days for 17000 points ≈ 188.9p/day

Sorry, it's been a long day. I misunderstood and thought you meant 6k and 17k HP delegation. You meant the cost in points for extra time. Haha yeah, definitely not worth it.

Pricing for Points can be seen in the Points wallet. Ecency works hard at being transparent. Earning free Points by using Ecency is intended to be the best option.

Playing the Spinner game daily on the app awards free Points. Active users tend to get the best spin rewards!

So worth it if you just earn the points passively.

I am currently delegating to Ecency aswell. I get 500 points daily and 1.2 hive (ish) daily and I take that 1.2 hive daily and buys hp delegations via HE for 5 weeks and get 101 hp delegated xD
Apr is 10.06%

Properly not worth it at all, but meh gotta try something :p

Gotta hustle any way you can, right?

Ye, but looking at it in a selfish way, its properly not worth it at all xD
I get up to 3,7k HP delegated to me in 5 weeks in total, but I am still delegating 5k to Ecency for that 3,7k and if you add the 200 hp from Ecency Boost+ every 7 day, it adds another 1k hp to the mix (For 5 weeks), I am still shy 300 hp :p

So not really profitable! But more fun this way and helping out Ecency with HP & RC, this way, isn't a bad idea :p

I didn't know about that... I loved the old boosts and they were much harder to get than upvotes from a lot of other projects offering a similar feature.

The new boost+ now looks a bit overpriced, but I'll still try it, as I always have a bunch of ecency points coming from my activity on this frontend.

!PIZZA

Yeah, it's sad to see regression instead of progression.

If you're using free points you're not really losing unless you planned to use the points to promote your posts.

I can't understand why it was frowned upon and I don't want to think deeper to know what's at play. It's painful to see it go but I will keep using Ecency regardless... hopefully they roll out other options that can make it helpful.

Thanks for the run down, I saw the new Boost+ option but wasn't sure what it done. It's not a bad way of incentivising people to boost their HP and have some bigger votes to distribute.

I personally only use the promotion feature with the points, because it's a good way to get content out to a larger audiance and in the long run that's better than upvotes, because you can meet new people based on the content we produce.

No problem. Yeah, fortunately they didn't get rid of the promote option.

If I can earn points passively round 500 per day than I'll go with this Ecency hp boost otherwise I'll prefer to buy Hive, and make my own HP.

Boosts for content are being discontinued, but Ecency will still be giving out votes! Only the method will be different.

The Ecency Point system is intended to gameify and provide incentive for anyone who is actively using Ecency.
Earning free Points is definitely the best option! You can check the Ecency Leaderboard to see how many Points are being earned daily, weekly, monthly. There are extra incentives for being in the top 10 and many Ecencials work hard at being more engaged and see their name at the top!

Ecency app brings many new users to Hive, especially from countries where having access to a PC is difficult, or those of us who simply prefer using mobile.

🔥By delegating to Ecency you earn 100% DAILY curation rewards according to delegation ratio. And for your delegation, along with the Hive you receive, you also receive 10% of your delegation EACH DAY in Ecency POINTS.
As you can see in the Points wallets of any of us who delegate to Ecency the Points add up!

👏👏👏

Entonces que puedo hacer con mis ecency points?

This is really detailed on the ecency boost+. but my question is would the delegation be removed after 7 days even though you have paid

Thanks! Yes, it is removed after the time period you paid for is over.
