I have a friend who has always said that he would never buy gold. If you ask him why his response is simple, "because I can just pick it up off the ground." Of course he is a gold prospector and like me likes to go out and find his own. There is literally gold just lying in or on the ground all over the planet, you just need to know where to look. That is often the hardest part because prospectors don't like to share their secret spots that they go to prospect with just anyone.
When I would go out prospecting for nuggets in Arizona with my friends I was sworn to secrecy on the location of the site. They told me you can go out there all you want just don't share the location with anyone else, and I still haven't to this day. I can only say it's within 50 miles of Yuma, Arizona.
On my last nugget post I shared the largest nugget I found out there that was about 4 grams. Most of the nuggets were usually smaller around half a gram up to a gram. But on one trip I did pick up this beauty with my metal detector. It's about 2 grams and like the other was in the same wash I had been exploring. It was about six inches deep and to my surprise there was a nice deposit of smaller nuggets around half a gram each in the same spot. I think I walked away that day with about 8 grams of gold, not too bad a day for wandering around in the desert!
Like I mentioned this little nugget is just about 2 grams. Just like all of the other nuggets in the area it had been worn down smooth by an ancient river that deposited all of the nuggets in the area. If you find gold that is jagged and not worn down in a small stream or dry wash you can sometimes follow upstream and find the source of the gold. I only managed do to this once but the vein was only about a quarter inch wide and mostly eroded away already, but I did get some nice gold ore samples from it.
Like my friend said you really can pick gold up off the ground. Prospecting can be a fun hobby but it is a lot of work. If you are just starting out it's a good idea to find some more experienced people that are willing to let you tag along. They can teach you the best places to search or pan for gold. It's hard to find gold if you're looking for it where there isn't any to be found!
