Today I really wasn't sure what I was going to share. I have several posts partially written but none of them really looked all that fun. I then proceeded to open up some files of Silver Striker tokens that I have saved. A few looked fun but one really caught my eye, a silver token I haven't removed from storage for many years now. Fortunately I had some great pictures already saved right on the hard drive.
I've have always been a big fan of western movies. I remember watching Clint Eastwood westerns, Silverado, Young Guns, and many others growing up in the 1980's. Then in the early 1990's two movies came out about Tombstone, Arizona and the infamous gunfight that took place at the O.K. corral. The first was Tombstone with Kurt Russel and Val Kilmer, then Kevin Costner came out with a much longer movie Wyatt Earp. A very key figure in these stories is of course John Henry Holliday, better know as "Doc" Holliday.
About the round:
Casinos: Multiple in Colorado
Mint: no mint mark
Series: Limited Edition Lawmen
Composition: 99.9% silver surrounded by brass ring
Logo side: Man and horse
Design side: J. H. "Doc" Holliday
Silver weight: about 0.6 troy ounces
This is nice Silver Striker token that was produced for casinos in Colorado as part of a series of famous lawmen. I never have been able to figure out where it was minted or when, but I loved the western theme! Silver Strikers are fun to collect, they can be won by playing Silver Striker slot machines or buying second hand on eBay or pawn shops. The best part is they are 99.9% silver inside that outer brass ring, so great to collect or stack!

A picture of Doc Holliday
Doc Holliday was a dentist from Georgia who contracted tuberculosis (then known as consumption) and moved west hoping the drier climate would ease his symptoms and disease. He started to live the life of a gambler and by most accounts was very good at his new profession. Having very quick reflexes also earned him a reputation as a very dangerous gunman. In Texas he saved the life of Wyatt Earp in a saloon confrontation and the two became close friends. They travelled together through New Mexico and ending up eventually in Tombstone, Arizona.
There they joined Virgil and Morgan Earp (Wyatt's bothers). Before long Virgil became the Tombstone city marshal. Tensions began to flare as a local cowboy group began to accuse Holliday of robbing a stage coach and also began threatening the Earp's lives. Virgil deputized Holliday before the three Earps and Holliday attempted to disarm a group of the cowboys on the lot next to the O.K. Corral. It was really more of a 15 foot wide alley than a vacant lot.

The actual site of the gun fight at the O.K. Corral with stand in figures
A thirty second gunfight erupted with the combatants being only around fifteen feet from one another . The air was thick with gun smoke limiting visibility. It would have been difficult to see your opponents clearly. When all was said and done three of the cowboys lie dead, Virgil and Morgan Earp were wounded, a bullet grazed Holliday's hip and Wyatt Earp was unscathed.
Imagine being caught up in a gunfight in that small a space. It must a been a terrifying experience. I often had thought how did they miss form such a short distance, but adrenaline and nerves probably made them all pretty shaky. I'm sure glad I wasn't a participant!
A few month later Morgan Earp was murdered and Virgil badly wounded bringing about the infamous "Revenge Ride". Wyatt, Doc, and few others hunted down those supposedly responsible for the killing of Morgan. Due to legal reasons the group fled the state and Holliday ended up Glenwood Springs, Colorado. He was hoping the hot spring there would cure his disease, but he died there of tuberculosis in 1887 at 36 years of age.
Now just for fun I thought I might include a song written about Doc Holliday by Volbeat. They are a heavy metal band from Denmark who wrote an entire album based on the old west characters called "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies". It's a great album if you are looking for something new to check out! This will be a warm up for Three Tune Tuesday I suppose!
Here's "Doc Holliday":
