When I used to live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania there were many weekends I would head for Atlantic City, New Jersey with my friends. It's not exactly Las Vegas but there are a lot of hotels/casinos that have been in operation since legalized gambling was approved by New Jersey voters in 1976. It has great beaches and a boardwalk with shops at the beach front, it's a lot of fun in the summer!
An interesting piece of history of Atlantic City is that from the years 1981 until 1984 the Playboy Enterprises operated their own casino there by the name of Playboy Hotel & Casino. The project had problems from the start. Obtaining a gaming license and funding forced them to partner with the Elsinore Corporation who ran a hotel/casino in Las Vegas. They were given a temporary provisional gaming license from the New Jersey Gaming Board and were able to operate until 1984. At that point a gaming license was granted to Elsinore but not to Playboy over concerns about Playboys London casino operations, forcing Playboy to sell it's shares to Elsinore. The name was quickly changed to the Atlantis and operated until 1989.
And now is where it gets bizarre... Donald Trump then bought it and made it the Trump Regency. But in 1992 the bank holding the mortgage took possession of the casino until Trump bought it back in 1995 and changed the name again to Trump's World Fair in 1996. It then closed down for good in 1999 since it wasn't profitable and was demolished the following year.
But this is an interesting piece of casino history from Atlantic City, NJ:
About the token:
Location: USA
Mint: Green Duck Corporation (per Numista, however other sources state they went out of business in 1962, so mint is really questionable)
Year: Between 1981-1984
Denomination: One Dollar casino play value
Composition: copper/nickel
Weight: 22.5 grams
Diameter: 37.2 mm
Thickness: 2.55 mm
Obverse: Big $1 with lettering: PLAYBOY HOTEL & CASINO 1gd ATLANTIC CITY ACCEPTABLE ONLY AT PLAYBOY ONE DOLLAR TOKEN NOT LEGAL TENDER
Reverse: Playboy bunny head and TM
Although it isn't silver which would have been cool, I got it for free when I purchased some coins in a coin shop in Long Beach so I can't complain! It seems to have gotten a lot of use in casino play as it's scratched up quite a bit. But it's just a very interesting part of the history of both Atlantic City and Playboy Enterprises. Then at the end you even get some Donald Trump in the story....
But definitely not an item that any stacker will likely want to collect since it isn't silver, but for a casino chip collectors it's pretty cool!

Playboy Hotel and Casino right along the boardwalk and the beach front
As you can see the hotel/casino had a beautiful location on the beach front and the boardwalk. It's a shame they couldn't succeed but I guess the moral to the story is to always make sure you have connections in the gaming board before building a casino anywhere. You really live at the mercy of the gaming board and can deny the license or revoke it at any time they see fit and you are instantly out of the casino business.
Makes me glad I didn't choose a career in the casino industry!
Thanks for stopping by and reading my post. If you have any questions, suggestion or comments feel free to leave them below. Have a great weekend everyone!
And my disclaimer:
Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.
