About a week ago I shared an amazing new silver coin coming from Nuie celebrating the upcoming year of the dragon. This got me searching to see what other nations might be trying to cash in on the event as well. Then I came across this unique coin from the nation of Burundi.
My first thought was where is Burundi? I honestly had no knowledge about the country other than hearing the name in the past. It turns out that it's a very small country land locked in Africa that has been subject to political unrest and genocide over the last fifty years. It is also the poorest country on the planet in terms of gross domestic product. So why are they producing silver coins to celebrate the year of the dragon?
My theory is that it's a good way for the government to make money. Nuie produces massive amounts of commemorative coins and the reason for that is simple, they make money. No doubt the government of Burundi decided to try and cash in on the same gravy train!
My first impression of the coin upon viewing the dragon wasn't overwhelming. But what is interesting is the jade stone carving of a dragon incorporated into the coin with a small gold dragon above it. That sold me on it! Now if the dragon had been gold plated in really would have stood out, but still a very cool coin!

About the coin:
Country: Burundi
Denomination: 25 Francs
Composition: Silver 99.9%
Weight: 2 Troy ounces
Mintage: 1,888
Mint: MDM Mint, Germany
Obverse: National emblem of Borundi
Reverse: A dragon with a jade stone with a carved dragon
Will I buy this unique silver coin? I have no idea since I haven't found any concrete pricing as of yet. It is a very cool work of art, so if the price is right I might consider it. But since it is a dragon coin I had to share it, who doesn't like dragons after all?
I have been on a bit of an animal kick lately, because its' always fun to share animals. Since I can't find a legendary Chinese dragon (because they don't exist,) I thought it might be fun to talk about a real dragon that does exist, the Komodo dragon.

These reptiles can grow up to 3 meters (9.8 feet) in length and are found on four Indonesian islands. They can weigh up to 70 kg (150 pounds), so a very large lizard! They are apex predators meaning they are the the king of the hill and nothing hunts an adult other than humans. They are ambush predators that attack and kill deer, goats, and smaller prey when it gets to close. Their bite is considered very toxic due to bacteria but also they have venom that seems to cause clotting leading to the demise of their prey. They have been known to attack and eat humans on rare occasions. So keeping your distance from them is probably a wise move...
They are considered an endangered species as humans have hunted them for sport and are now a protected species. Their diet consists solely of meat, eating whatever carrion they find or can kill. They are known to eat the young of their species as well as eggs laid by other dragons. Basically a dog eat dog world on their small four islands of existence. Overall a reptile I think I will avoid but very cool as they are one of the few lizards named dragon and are huge!
