Working on my health

As I shared a few days ago, I've been working on improving my health after a bit of a hospital scare as well as some longer term complaints that just won't go away. Funnily enough I was already planning on getting my butt moving again because the treadmill was ordered the morning of the day that I ended up at the ER, which is typical, isn't it?

Either way, I had to wait another week before the treadmill would arrive but thanks to having the best weather in weeks, I had no issues going on long neighbourhood walks with my little helper. She has been great support and an absolute doll all week. Still, I was very pleased when it was Friday and the man of the house came back home to put the thing together. There's no such thing as me being independent when there's something like that needing to be put together, just being honest here!

Reading the charts

So even though I've been checking some of the charts of the smart scale to discover that my cardiac level index was low and that I've been growing muscle mass in the past days, I never really noticed (not before last week's event either) that my protein was too low. I'm pretty sure back in the days it was always too high, as I'm a freak for eggs, especially these tasty ones they have here, but I stopped eating them (or now eat them so rarely) after I noticed my stomach was upset every single time that I ate eggs.

My daughter hates the egg yolk (she's nuts) and I hate the egg white, so when she requests as boiled egg sandwich, I gave in by eating her egg yolks with some salt, lol. I noticed that that didn't upset my stomach but even that has been a while. This is a big change for me because a few years ago, I ate eggs at least every other day.

A journey

So this whole getting healthier journey doesn't only contain me getting fit and move more, it also contains more insights about some foods that I need (or need to replace with something that I normally don't eat) so that I don't put in the work for nothing. I noticed today that I was close to getting cramps constantly while on the treadmill, which eventually made me decide that today I will leave it at one time 30 minutes. But it's funny to see that in these few days my comfy pace already went up from 4,4 km per hour to 5.5 km per hour. Never did I imagine I'd notice such an improvement in a few days.

Lessons about food

I've never been crazy about meat, I have a few meat dishes I absolutely love but as I mentioned before, I can go without meat for days without any issue, especially now that I know quite some new things that are vegetarian and just as satisfying to me. But I never knew that being short on protein could lead to having cravings for sweet and unhealthy stuff as well as joint pains and muscle pains. I have quite a bit of experience with both and now I'm going to make sure to keep an eye on these protein levels and signs my body is giving me because if I can't fill this up by food, I may buy some powder for these days that I need it.

Not just yet though, let's first see how it goes. I think it's typical that the day that my protein was lower than the other days, I had quite some cramp coming up which I had 0 the other days. I've learned to listen to my body quite well and keep track in detail at the moment not just for the cardiologist but because I'd like to have proof about what works best for me.

Toaster in the pocket!

You may wonder what this picture above has to do with the story, well, this picture is the reason that I realized I can't even make a proper avocado toast as our toaster belonged to the house we rented. I didn't miss it until today and as we still had a 20 euros savings cheque available, we went to the Carrefour to get it. I knew it was 25,50 euros (which I think is way too much for what it is, but I know this is the price nowadays) so I figured we're in the neighbourhood, let's just get it.

In the supermarket, I saw the toaster, and noticed this:

First, I thought this was another model but the model I wanted wasn't there at all. Until I checked the model number and found out this is the same! They sell it in their own online store for € 25,50 while the store where I could pick it up for free within 2 hours sell it for € 33! Insanity. That's 33,33% more expensive, wow! Then we checked a few other things in the electronics department, same story. Good lesson!

Was it a regular / hypermarket carrefour? As we have a Carrefour express around the corner and there the prices are much higher as well. The shop owner is an independent and is opened 7 days out of 7, while 'normal' supermakets are often closed sunday afternoon and sometimes monday before noon.

But yes, eggs, if prepared well, I really love them!

Well, I know about the Carrefour tricks of upping (and lowering) prices a lot before and after their promos .. so I'm a bit more aware and paying attention nowadays BUT I personally didn't expect prices in a hypermarket to be this much higher than online. I understand if they sell it online through another store that a price can differ but it was the actual item sold from Carrefour in this case.

I can understand the Carrefour express differences because these prices are higher overall, it was really the hypermarket, sigh.

As we also checked some shavings machines on the spot, I now know that I will most likely not buy anything electric in store anymore lol. First check online, compare etc. But in some cases for the Carrefour savings check (in this case it was this as well) I will most likely still end up buying something there even if it's a few bucks more expensive because of being able to buy it with the cheque.

Eggs, ugh I guess I have to eat them today because today I'm even having a lower protein percentage, according to the scale. It will take me a bit of time to figure this out I guess, but hey, as long as the Blood pressure is under control, the rest will follow slowly, right?

I experienced carrefour as bzing one of the more expensive supermarkets anyway so not going there for my usual groceries.

What cheque are you talking about? A method to pay with crypto or some 'food cheques' or such?

Lile you I don't the yellow of the egg, but when it's all mixed, I don't taste it that much and thus don't care that much. But when boiled, I don't like the yellow at all..

No here in Spain they have this system where you save 1% of your spendings (and a ton of other promotions and connected companies) towards your "savings cheque" which they hand out every 2 months..

At first I blinded followed their 2 for 1 promos where you saved 1 x the money in the cheque. I had a 170 euro cheque I think it was the first time. BUT then I discovered they up their prices a lot and these toilet paper savings for 20 euros every time were actually just the price the added to it in total (talking about XXL packs lol) I discovered later that you can buy them for half price somewhere else and so I started to pay closer attention.

I discovered they do it with things as Coffee cups too, criminal practice if you ask me. Now my usual savings in 2 months are more like 20-50 euros tops depending on if they had some long shelve things for the normal price (so it's actually a saving lol) which I needed or not. If not, I will not load up anymore.

I don't know if Carrefour does this in other countries too these savings systems, never had them near a home until in Spain.

Haha I only like the yellow :) not the white.. but my daughter is the same, she hates the yellow while that's the part that's tasty.. all fine, at least in our case it means we get to share these eggs lol.

In Belgium you get points for every 2 euro spent. When you reach 500 points, you receive a cheque of €5. Son it means, you get a reduction of %0,5

Not worth it compared to the higher prices they have, atleast here.

There are some promotions where you can earn extra points for purchasing product X. But yea, receiving 20 points when you need to buy something of €50 is still not worth it imo.. When there's no other option aka no other supermarkets, it's a different story ofcourse. Just looking at prices here.

But hey people fall for it, so did I! They are in bad luck with me though as I remember prices very well and notice it when prices of items we always buy increase and know where to go for which item.. often waiting for a returning promotion etc.. So I noticed quite fast, thankfully. When I noticed, I brought back 1 of these XXL packs toiletpaper and they stupidly didn't deduct the 20 euros savings, lol. So that was my compensation for falling for the tricks!

I now only buy certain items there as they are the only ones selling them, and sometimes I'm lucky like with our bio toothpaste which is always the same price (also at other online stores) and second was 50% off now. No price increased first, so that's a good reason to get two, but otherwise, I will not do it.

No worries about mixing, in this case, I'm happy that one likes the yolk and the other the white, at least I don't have to throw out half of the eggs then!

Oof, that's a big price difference. Do they price match there? I know some stores if you show them the online price they will match it, but I've never done it.
Sometimes we can get back tolerance for foods after avoiding them a long time. For years I avoided eggs and anything carbonated because both upset my stomach, and then discovered I could eat them again. I drink a lot of ginger ale (tho I have cut back, lol) but I still don't eat many eggs these days. But when I first started eating my allergy diet instead of being vegan, I ate eggs and had a craving for them like you would have thought I was a pregnant person, all I wanted was eggs for months. I must have needed the protein or something too. These days I eat them so rarely I just got powdered eggs for cooking and I've only bought fresh ones a couple of times in the past years, ha ha.

It's the same store, so my guess is they just tell you to buy it online then!

Instead of buying it in-store, I just made the order online and chose click and collect (no shipping) hoping that I could pick it up after we returned home, passing this store again, this worked out :)

Oh that's actually very hopeful reading your egg-sperience :) lol because damn, I just love the taste of a good egg yolk SO much! I always feel deeply disappointed when one of my prepped eggs turns out to have a meh egg yolk while the other one is SO tasteful!

These cravings I had too, not only for eggs but also for potatoes and these occurred in my pregnancies too so whenever these happened, my boyfriend used to ask me if I was pregnant again, lol. So I hear you!

Today my scale gave an even lower percentage of protein and that's after I ate tons of meat last night because of the scale measurement, I don't fancy meat that much so that's not something I'm willing to do every day. Today I started reading more about which food I can eat to fill up the deficiency and I'm just going to make a list for myself to put on the fridge to remind myself for a while until I remember.

I'm in doubt if I should first load up on protein or just start walking again and then refill, I guess I'm going to face this deficiency for a while because my guess is, it's not something that started recently. Hopefully, I will not face any cramping issues today..

I'm trying to avoid powdered stuff but if needed, I will buy it later to see if it really makes a difference. Let's see.

I myself use whey powder and it keeps my blood sugar stable, which was always crashing before. I get a plain unflavored one and mix it with what flavors I want (like coffee), not only because of allergies but also it tastes better and that way you aren't being charged whey prices for the weight of sugar and cocoa powder or whatever. :)

Shop around is the moral of the story...! I'm glad you're adding protein to the diet, it's important and you don't get much from most veggies unless it's a lot of beans.

How's the treadmill doing now? Still working OK. It's nice to get out walk with you're little helper, I'm sure she likes it too.

Yeah, so I discovered a pot of Spirulina (well, discovered I bought it myself to add to smoothies but haven't done so as I needed to read up on it first) and it says high in protein. I will now start reading into it in the next day as it may help me to add a variety of protein .. today the scale said it was even lower so I'm really keen to find out if this changes with some adjustments may it be in the form of actual food and some powder if needed.

Today is the first day I haven't done it in the morning but I'm trying to catch up on some stuff and will probably end up doing it in the evening today. But first I have to see the cardiologist tonight.

Tell me about it, I can't wait until the avocados are ripe so we can have such a sandwich in the next days.. already looking forward to that!

I never saw a Toaster like that one before... It looks like it would work nice... The Story about the Price Difference, was interesting...

I don't think that's really weird as I remember in Holland we never had any similar toasters either. This is something I learned about in Spain where they have it in almost every home so it seems.

Haven't used it yet as yesterday when I wanted to use it, I found out they stuck a huge sticker on the part where you put your food. Sigh. Quite stupid..

I imagine, you're able to remove the piece where you toast your bread...

Sadly, no.. it's so stupid that the both of us were amazed by the stupidity because it's not the easy sticker to remove, it's real nasty shit. Can't imagine it's great for your health. I don't want water to get inside from heavy cleaning either.

Hey there, I'm happy for tips given, so thank you for that. Just one thing that I personally don't wish to go back and forward about is simply the fact about the pictures..

For all these years on the platform, I've always given credit to pictures that are not taken by myself, you can go back and see. If no comment, it's my own picture, and honestly, I don't feel like changing this habit after all these years because in the beginning, this is how everyone wanted to have it, and it's been the way of practice for most people since they joined.

Usually, all pictures follow my story and are clear that they are part of my food preparation (to give the example as this one is a food picture above) and the second one in this case, it's clear from reading my post where the picture was taken as well.

Tags, it remains a nightmare for me, that will probably always be the same. I will try to take it into consideration!
