Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Vibes Community. My name is Jasper, and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town, South Africa! Welcome to Week 8 of the Vibes Web3 Music Competition!
This week we have a 1960’s theme! Okay, let me take a break from posting original songs, and do a 1960's cover today!!
Well, my parents are actually 75 and 76 now, and so they grew up with 1960’s music. Because they were music lovers with an extensive cassette tape collection, and then an extensive CD collection as well, I also grew up with plenty of good music playing in the house, and a lot of it was 1960’s music!
My parents have always been supportive of me playing music myself. After I started to write songs on an old nylon string guitar that had previously belonged to my sister, they gifted me this fantastic steel string acoustic guitar I still play today! Even before that, they gifted me this harmonica rack I still use, and my first harmonica. They were probably inspired to do this because I was already playing them covers by Bob Dylan and Neil Young from the 1960’s and 1970’s, and these two famous artists were both famous for playing harmonica and guitar simultaneously!
Besides two originals, Bob Dylan’s first album in 1962 mainly contained covers of folk standards. However, his second album “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan”, released in 1963, contained some of the most famous originals he ever wrote, which is amazing considering he was only 21 at the time. These songs included “Masters of War”, “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall”, “Don’t Think Twice it’s All Right” and most notable of all “Blowin’ in the Wind”!
“Blowin’ in the Wind” was hugely influential because of the poignant rhetorical questions it asked about peace, war and freedom. Because of this, other artists started covering it as soon as it was released (or even before in some cases!) Famous early covers included “Peter, Paul and Mary”, “The Staples” and Stevie Wonder, but it has been recorded by hundreds of other artists since! As such, it is one of the most influential songs of the 1960s, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1994.
Ah well, I hope you like this one! Thank you for listening! Best of luck to everyone entering the Contest!

Lyrics to “Blowin’ in the Wind” by Bob Dylan (1963)
How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
Yes, ’n’ how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, ’n’ how many times must the cannonballs fly
Before they’re forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind
How many years can a mountain exist
Before it’s washed to the sea?
Yes, ’n’ how many years can some people exist
Before they’re allowed to be free?
Yes, ’n’ how many times can a man turn his head
Pretending he just doesn’t see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind
How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, ’n’ how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, ’n’ how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind
