Some new additions to the game catalog 🎮
It's that time of the month again. PlayStation just announced which games will be added to the PS Plus Extra/Premium Game Catalog.
If you are unaware of what this means, the PS Plus game catalog is basically PlayStation's competitor to Xbox Game Pass.
Most months have had some pretty good games to play, but there have been a few times where there was nothing that interested me. January 2023 is looking to be a great month!
Today I will be telling you about a few of the best games you can expect to show up as free downloads if you are a PS Plus Extra or Premium subscriber. If you wish to see all new additions, please refer to playstation.blog for more details.
The new games will become available for free starting January 17th.
Let's get started...
There are two standout games that I think are totally worth your time this month:
Back 4 Blood
Available on PS4/PS5
This one comes from the creators responsible for the co-op first-person shooter Left 4 Dead. Back 4 Blood is not a sequel to either of the original games, but instead is designed from the ground up as an original title and blends the best of what made the co-op zombie shooter so successful with new features such as a card system and state-of-the-art technology in regards to graphics and performance stability.
This is the ideal game to play with a group of 4 friends. It is imperative that you work together in a game like this, otherwise you will quickly succumb to the hordes of zombies waiting to feast on your flesh.
I recently posted about the free PS5 upgrade for World War Z Aftermath and am looking forward to finally getting in on some zombie co-op action. Lucky for me I get to do that a week earlier than expected thanks to Back 4 Blood. These two games are of the same ilk, so I'll surely have a comparison to talk about after I've spent time with both.

Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition
Available on PS5 only
I actually already own this one and can confirm it is the best Devil May Cry game out right now. I'm not a huge fan of the series or even the style of gameplay, but I couldn't help but love this one. The graphics are seriously just so amazing and it's great that it has a 120 FPS option so you really never miss a beat.
If you are like me and normally don't go for this style of action game, please at least give this one a chance so you can see its beauty in action.
I still never finished this game and probably never will, but I'm happy that I took the time to at least give it a shot and experience some of what it has to offer.
That's not all folks 🥕
There's a host of other titles that will also be available, but most of them are ones I don't know much about or already know are not for me.
The other free games are as follows:
Dragon Ball FighterZ - PS4
Life is Strange: Before the Storm - PS4
Life is Strange - PS4
Jett: The Far Shore - PS4/PS5
Just Cause 4: Reloaded - PS4
Omno - PS4
Erica - PS4
Out of those, I'm only interested in one. That would be Omno, which looks like a beautiful little indie game that may turn out to be a lot of fun. I don't anticipate spending a ton of time with either, but you never know.
Looking forward to some new games 👀
My PS Plus Extra runs out in February, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to renew it because I'd hate to miss out on any new games that get added this year. It's slightly more than the standard PS Plus Essential, but I think the added cost is more than worth it with the massive catalog of games that you gain access to.
I've really been wanting to play Back 4 Blood and now I'll finally get my chance. The only experience I have with it is some very minimal time with the beta. It launched in pretty bad shape, but now the game is supposedly pretty amazing. Can't wait to find out for me and then compare it to World War Z Aftermath.
