Now we know what the future holds 💸 👀
Hype for PlayStation's next iteration of VR has been building throughout all of 2022. We've slowly been getting drip-fed bits of info every few months. We know what the headset and controller look like, some of the first-party games it will launch with, and the fact that the original PSVR games will not be compatible with PSVR 2.
The biggest PlayStation virtual reality info drop yet has just been released in a recent PSVR 2 PlayStation blog post. The price and release date have both been revealed. The good thing is that the PSVR 2 will be here very soon. The bad news, it is much more expensive than most consumers were expecting.
The PSVR 2 will cost a whopping $550. That's the price before tax, added accessories, and games. If you don't already own a PS5, then you'll have to cough up some dough for that as well. Which if you've been paying attention, the PS5 received a price increase throughout most of the world a few months back. You're looking at well over $1,000 for everything, but is that the cost to get access to next-gen VR?
Like the PS5's DualSense controller, the PSVR 2's Sense controller will feature adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. However, the PSVR 2 Sense controller charging station will cost an additional $50. That means that if you want the most convenient way to charge your controllers, then you're looking at $600 already. Remember that the PSVR 2 is wired, which means you won't ever have to worry about charging it. Another side note is that there will be haptics in the headset as well, which is a major difference between Meta's VR options.
At least the launch lineup of PSVR 2 games is starting to look beefy. [This blog post has every single game announced so far, as well as a few rumored games. There are a lot of great-looking options such as Horizon Call of the Mountain, Crossfire: Sierra Squad, Pistol Whip VR, Zenith: The Last City, Resident Evil Village, After The Fall, and many more.
The release date for PSVR 2 is set for Wednesday, February 22, 2023. Preorders through PlayStation Direct start on Tuesday, November 15, 2022. You can register to preorder now.
In today's video
I will be discussing every single thing that we know about the PSVR 2 so far. There is a lot! Luckily, I have plenty of PSVR 2 gameplay to accompany my commentary.
Enjoy the video and comment on your thoughts about PSVR 2. It certainly looks like a huge leap forward in terms of the evolution of VR. The question remains, is this thing dead on arrival due to price? Consumers seem to have mixed reactions. One side understands that the tech under the hood warrants the high cost, while others can barely afford to pay for PS Plus and will be left scrounging for the funds to buy this fancy new gadget for quite some time.
I'm on the fence about this. I've never played VR in my life outside of putting my friend's Meta Quest on for like 30 seconds and not even getting to play a game. I promised myself that I'd be getting the PSVR 2 no matter what, but it costs quite a bit more than I was expecting. It all really depends on where the crypto markets go these next few months. If prices jump up again, I'll probably buy one. If things stay where they are now or somehow manage to go lower, I don't feel like this is a very smart way to spend $600+ during a time when financial markets aren't looking so hot. Especially because I'm not even sure how much I'd even use the thing considering I have zero experience with VR. I'm currently more than satisfied with regular games on PS5, so I'm being patient with this decision.
One thing is for certain, it will be exciting to see how the PSVR 2 reviews once it launches early next year. Stay tuned for more information.
