I’ve been on a Resident Evil Binge. I really don’t know what struck this craving of mine, but hey you know it is here and it is not disappearing. While I wait for my games to come in off of ebay, and my Capture Card, I decided that I would go ahead and buy Resident Evil Revelations on the PC.

Now I’ve never played Resident Evil Revelations before in my life. I’ve heard of it, know the general premise of it, but never actually played it, so I was pretty pumped up to dive into this new title. That was until I actually started to play it.

Now the timeline for RE Revelations can be a bit confusing as a part of it takes place before RE4, and then the rest of the game is set between 4 and 5, even though the game came out after 5.

Ahora bien, nunca antes en mi vida había jugado a Resident Evil Revelations. He oído hablar de él, conozco su premisa general, pero nunca lo jugué, así que estaba bastante emocionado de sumergirme en este nuevo título. Eso fue hasta que comencé a jugarlo.
Ahora bien, la línea de tiempo de RE Revelations puede ser un poco confusa ya que una parte tiene lugar antes de RE4, y luego el resto del juego se establece entre 4 y 5, a pesar de que el juego salió después de 5.

A Convoluted Plot

RE Revelations is the “first '' introduction to the BSAA, Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance, and the FBC. In the early days, the BSAA was nothing more than an NGO with almost no power at all while the FBC (Federal Bioterrorism Commission) was a government entity.

Fast forward to 2004 to a floating city called Terragrigia. The city was a staple of human innovation, that was until a terrorist group released a virus on the island. Hunters ravaged the streets killing anyone that wasn’t infected and the BSAA and the FBC were called in to assist the situation.

During this section ( which is largely flashbacks that happen throughout later chapters in the game) we play as FBC Agent Parker Luciani, as him and his partner navigate office buildings, dealing with the onslaught of BOWs.

After weeks of fighting, there was no hope left for the city. It was believed that all survivors were dead. The BSAA and FBC set up a command center within the city, and the commissioner of the FBC Morgan Lansdale considered the city a lost cause and in order to stop the infection from spreading, he got authorization to use a solar powered weapon in the form of a satellite.

All surviving agents evacuated the city, and the weapon was activated, the statilie, acting like a mirror to an ant hill. It turned to a trajectory, where the panels on it reflected the heat from the sun, and those beams were directed at the city. The city cracked in half, buildings collapsed, hunters turned to ash, and the floating city sunk into the sea.

This incident led to the very first article being written about BOWs, and letting the world know about their existence.

Disillusioned by what the FBC had done, Parker left the group, joining the BSAA.

A year later, Jill Valentine, Parker, and Clive O Brian ( the head of the BSAA) are investigating the shores of the Terragrigia incident, where odd blobs of flesh have been washing up. While Investigating, O Brian got word that Chris Redfield, and his partner Jessica ( Previously Parker’s partner when they both were a part of the FBC) had gone off the map, and could not be contacted. Then they got a ping for their location in the middle of the ocean on a ship called the Queen Zenoba.

And this here is where the story gets boring. You see when we get to play as Chris we learn that everything was a setup that Chris and Jessica were just in a dead zone while they investigated the revival of the terrorist organization that caused the Terragrigia incident. They found their base but before they could investigate they were made aware that O Brian had lost contact with Jill and Parker, and Chris and Jessica rushed to their aid.

When we play as Jill and Parker we are investigating the Queen Zenoba, and after they realized they were lured into a trap, their ship gets destroyed, leaving them stranded on this derelict ship that is full of regenerators. And that’s the main enemy you face throughout the entire game. Every time you go through a hallway there’s one waiting for you, which becomes annoying, predictable and not fun in the least.

Jill and Parker’s main objective is to get the communications working on the ship in order to call for help, they also encounter another FBC agent there by the name of Raymond who seems to be working against them.

When we play as Chris and Jessica it’s all about finding Jill and honestly, there’s nothing more worth saying. Once they team up they eventually find out that the ship had 3 sister ships each were being controlled by the terrorist group. They had extracted a virus from a deep sea fish and mixed it in with the T-Virus, to create the T-Abyss Virus. A waterborne Virus capable of infecting the entire sea and turning the creatures into BOWS.

Cuando jugamos como Chris y Jessica, todo se trata de encontrar a Jill y, sinceramente, no hay nada más que valga la pena decir. Una vez que forman equipo, finalmente descubren que el barco tenía 3 barcos hermanos, cada uno de los cuales estaba controlado por el grupo terrorista. Extrajeron un virus de un pez de aguas profundas y lo mezclaron con el virus T para crear el virus T-Abyss. Un virus transmitido por el agua capaz de infectar todo el mar y convertir a las criaturas en ARCOS.

It’s also revealed that Lansdale was behind everything. He was working with the terrorist group as he believed the world needed to know about the BOWs and that the FBC was their only saving grace. To get rid of the evidence he pointed the Terragrigia satellite towards the Queen Zenoba, but Jill and Parker were able to trick the satellite with a UAV.

With the Queen Zenoba sinking, Chris and Jill were able to neutralize the virus, and then headed for the last sister ship, that was sitting on the bottom of the ocean floor near Terragrigia. It turns out that the terrorists used the ship to launch their attack. However it sank during the satellite attack, but the leader survived in a room that had a large enough airpocket to apparently keep him alive for a year. He had evidence of Lansdale dealing with him and after defeating him, Chris and Jill broadcasted the video to the BSAA headquarters.

Lansdale was arrested, O Brian resigned as he set up the incident with the Queen Zenoba, in order to lure Lansdale out. Only one other agent knew about his plan, Raymond, an FBC agent that was aboard the ship. There was a mole in the BSAA, and Clive could trust no one.

Things I hated

When it comes to how bad this game is, it definitely isn’t as bad as Umbrella Corps. But a lot of things could have been done better.

The game is obviously very important to the lore in the RE universe. After the FBC was disbanded the BSAA became the force it was in RE5 and beyond, an organization that was under the control of the UN.

But the thing is, the game has zero heart. The characters are unlikeable, their personality is just a half of step up from Anita Sarkeesian's. They never really talk about themselves, only about what is happening. For instance, Parker never talks about why he left the FBC. It’s never talked about how he and Jill became partners or why Jessica and Chris were.

Jessica is a flirt, and that’s only the real big thing about her, oh and apparently she was the mole inside of the BSAA, which should have been a “oh my god,” moment but it really was just a “Meh” one.

Jessica es una coqueta, y eso es lo realmente importante de ella, ah, y aparentemente ella era el topo dentro de la BSAA, lo que debería haber sido un momento de "Dios mío", pero en realidad fue solo uno de "Meh".

Parker dies, and the scene makes you want to feel for him, as he is shot trying to protect Raymond. Jill later finds him when the self-destruct sequence was initiated on the ship, and tries to help him to safety, only for the catwalk they were on to collapse. Jill is holding on to him as he is dangling above a firepit, but eventually, Parker lets go to save his partner and falls a good distance. When I said it makes you want to feel for him, it really does, however with no personality or character development, it was like watching a random npc die.

Oh wait, but apparently, he isn’t dead, because somehow Raymond finds him and they both get to safety before the ship explodes. Except the only way off the ship was the helicopter Chris and Jill got on.

And it turns out Jessica survived too. In fact, she and Raymond were working together and were both triple agents working for Tricell to obtain a sample of the T-Abyss Virus which they did.

Story wise, these things here just really annoyed me, but there is something else, something that a lot of games that came out around this time did, and it’s that this isn’t a whole game, it is divided into episodes.

Now TTG really started this trend and it worked well for them as they released each episode a month or so apart but RE Revelations isn’t like that. The entire game came out at the same time but yet they decided to divide sections into episodes, and at the start of each episode you get a recap of what you just played through like you have the memory of a goldfish.

And this is where a big failing of the game comes from, because at the end of each of these episodes there’s some sort of twist and it soon becomes boring. For instance, there’s a section where Jill and Parker are in a room that is being flooded with Water. We then take control of Chris and Jessica who just arrived on a ship, and eventually makes it to the room the other two should be in, only to find out that they were on the sister ship of the Queen Zenoba.

Ahora bien, TTG realmente inició esta tendencia y les funcionó bien, ya que lanzaron cada episodio con aproximadamente un mes de diferencia, pero RE Revelations no es así. El juego completo salió al mismo tiempo, pero decidieron dividir las secciones en episodios, y al comienzo de cada episodio obtienes un resumen de lo que acabas de jugar como si tuvieras la memoria de un pez dorado.
Y aquí es donde viene un gran fallo del juego, porque al final de cada uno de estos episodios hay algún tipo de giro y pronto se vuelve aburrido. Por ejemplo, hay una sección en la que Jill y Parker están en una habitación que se está inundando de agua. Luego tomamos el control de Chris y Jessica, quienes acaban de llegar en un barco y finalmente llegan a la habitación en la que deberían estar los otros dos, solo para descubrir que estaban en el barco hermano del Queen Zenoba.

The game was honestly just tiresome and annoying to play through, and next to Umbrella Corps, I have to say it’s the second worst Resident Evil game I played.
