Hello everyone!

Over the All Souls' holiday, I went back to my hometown and got together with the gang to play some board games. And finally, we had the chance to try out a new game: Spirit Island.

We only played one game, which took almost 4 hours because we were all still learning the basic mechanics of the game, but it was a GREAT experience, and we can't wait to play again!

The theme of the game, to begin with, is very interesting and different from the usual: normally, in games, we are the "colonizers" who are arriving in an uninhabited land and building a new civilization, extracting resources, building bases, recruiting armies, etc. But in Spirit Island, it's exactly the opposite: we, the players, are the spirits of the religion of the natives of a small Caribbean islet, which is being invaded by European conquerors. The natives are unable to fight back on their own against the invaders, who are much more powerful and numerous, so we, the spirits, have to interfere to defend the island and the native people.

The spirits don't physically exist on the island, obviously, they're just deities. So this interference is indirect: we protect the natives from harm, we push the conquerors around to waste their time, we make the natives stronger, we frighten the invaders, and so on.

In addition to the modern and innovative theme, the game's mechanics are extremely interesting and make cooperative play very interactive. Each spirit has different powers: some are more focused on defending the land, others on scaring the colonizers, others on supporting the actions of the other spirits, and so on. So there's a great incentive for players to talk to each other every turn in order to do actions that go together.

For example: one spirit can "push" the invaders from one tile to another; a second spirit can double another spirit's attack; and the third spirit can deal X points of damage to all the invaders in a specific place. Putting the three together in a chain action: the first pushes several invaders to the same place, the second doubles the attack of the third, and the third deals a great deal of damage to all the invaders who are now gathered on the same tile, killing them all at once.

Too efficient.

Our first gameplay took almost four hours because the game is really complicated and heavy. The first few rounds took a LOT of time because no one knew what they were doing, and we consulted the rule book about 10 times until the game got going. We would have liked to play a second game, but everyone was tired so we preferred to just play a Terraforming Mars for fun hehehe.

Durante o Feriado de Finados, voltei para minha cidade natal e me reuni com a galera para jogar alguns jogos de tabuleiro. E, finalmente, tivemos a oportunidade de testar um novo jogo: Spirit Island.

Jogamos apenas uma partida do jogo, que demorou quase 4 horas porque todos nós ainda estávamos aprendendo as mecânicas básicas do jogo, mas foi uma ÓTIMA experiência, e não vemos a hora de jogar de novo!

O tema do jogo, já para começar, é muito interessante e diferente do usual: normalmente, nos jogos, somos os "colonizadores" que estão chegando em uma terra desabitada e construindo uma nova civilização, extraindo recursos, construindo bases, recrutando exércitos, etc. Mas, no Spirit Island, é exatamente o inverso: nós, jogadores, somos espíritos da religião de nativos de uma pequena ilhota caribenha, que está sendo invadida por conquistadores europeus. Os nativos não conseguem lutar por conta própria contra os invasores, que são muito mais poderosos e numerosos, então nós, os espíritos, precisamos interferir para defender a ilha e o povo nativo.

Os espíritos não existem fisicamente na ilha, obviamente, são apenas divindades. Então essa interferência é indireta: protegemos os nativos do dano, empurramos os conquistadores de um lado para o outro para fazê-los perder tempo, deixamos os nativos mais fortes, amedrontamos os invasores, e por aí vai.

Além da temática moderna e inovadora, as mecânicas do jogo são extremamente interessantes, e deixam o jogo cooperativo muito interativo. Cada espírito tem poderes diferentes: alguns são mais focados em defender a terra, outros em assustar os colonizadores, outros em suportar as ações dos demais espíritos, e por aí vai. Então existe um grande incentivo para os jogadores, a cada turno, conversarem entre si para fazer ações que combam.

Por exemplo: um espírito consegue "empurrar" os invasores de um tile para outro; já um segundo espírito consegue dobrar o ataque de outro espírito; e o terceiro espírito consegue causar X pontos de dano em todos os invasores em um lugar específico. Juntando os três em uma ação encadeada: o primeiro empurra vários invasores para o mesmo lugar, o segundo dobra o ataque do terceiro, e o terceiro causa um grande dano em todos os invasores que agora estão reunidos no mesmo tile, matando todos de uma vez só.

Eficiência demais.

Nossa primeira gameplay demorou quase 4 horas pois, realmente, o jogo é complicado e pesado. As primeiras rodadas demoraram MUITO pois ninguém sabia o que estava fazendo, e consultamos o livro de regra umas 10 vezes até o negócio engrenar. Queríamos ter jogado uma segunda partida, mas todos estavam cansados então preferimos jogar só um Terraforming Mars de boa hehehe.

Quando jogarmos mais algumas partidas, volto com um novo post!
