Pokémon TCG Pocket Review: A Casual Gamer's Perspective

in #hive-1402174 days ago

Exactly a week ago when at the station I had seen someone playing Trading Card Game or often known as TCG Pokemon interesting through mobile phones. Long before that I had also seen several influencers on Youtube playing this game, initially I was not interested at all in TCG games because they tend to be boring and pay to win usually. Until finally I was bored with MOBA games and stumbling around trying to install pokemon TCG pocket, which ended up being addicted until now. Here's my review

First impression

When I first started playing, I felt that this game offers a fairly simple and easy-to-understand experience. Pokémon TCG Pocket focuses on collecting cards and building decks suitable for turn-based strategy battles, providing a more relaxed but challenging atmosphere. The simple game mechanics make it easy to adapt, even for players who have never played a card game before.

In addition, at the beginning, players will be given many rewards that can be used to buy 10 packs directly according to the theme of the decks chosen by the player, players will get random cards in each pack consisting of 5 random pokemon cards with a small chance of getting rare or legendary cards.

In this trial, I got mewtwo ex which has an interesting ability and after reading some of the forums it is included in the meta deck that is being widely used by players. But unfortunately there are still many other support cards that must also be owned in order to be maximised in this deck.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Pokémon TCG Pocket, developed directly by The Pokémon Company, packs the essence of the classic Pokémon card game into an easy-to-play digital format. Each match is fairly quick, lasting only about 3-5 minutes. This provides an ideal balance between in-depth strategy and less time-consuming gameplay that doesn't bore players like me.

Highlights From Pokémon TCG Pocket

I think there are 4 interesting points that can keep players playing this game:

  • Deck Building: Players build their decks with 20 cards, which can consist of Pokémon, energy cards, and item cards. This flexibility allows players to experiment with different strategies.
  • Simple Energy System: Unlike the sometimes confusing nature of traditional card games, Pokémon TCG Pocket simplifies the energy system making it easier for beginners to master, without losing the depth of strategy for experienced players.
  • Dynamic Battles: Pokémon's attack animations come to life, making the gaming experience more visually engaging.
  • Card Collection: One of the most satisfying aspects is opening booster packs every day to get new cards. Card collection is not only about getting rare Pokémon, but also about developing a strategy that suits the playstyle.

Conclusion

After playing this game for a full week I feel that Pokémon TCG Pocket successfully combines the nostalgic elements of Pokémon with fresh gameplay that is easy to understand even for a newbie like me. I think this game is suitable for Pokémon fans, TCG players, or anyone looking for a light but challenging gaming experience. So far this game has managed to be one of the ideal choices to play in your spare time and satai.

nice note

Pokemon definitely is a great legacy franchise, but I hope they can move towards blockchain gaming so that the digital cards can be NFT and start having value. This is what Splinterlands was able to revolutionize and pioneer of.

I was a Magic The Gathering TCG fan and this is what led me to Splinterlands. If you haven't tried yet, I would highly recommend for TCG lovers. Timing-wise, I think now's the best time to enter as well after the hype has died down. :)

Going back to your Pokemon TCG mobile experience, do you think it's something you would continue playing? For free or willing to invest on physical cards, in-app purchases? I would like to try, although what's holding me back is I don't want to spend much unless it's really worth it.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! I completely agree that Pokémon is a legacy franchise with a huge opportunity to explore blockchain gaming. It’s something that could definitely add a whole new level of value to the game, just like what Splinterlands has done.

As for the Pokémon TCG mobile experience, I think I’d still keep playing it for fun. The nostalgic vibes are real! But if I’m being honest, I’m sticking to the free side of things for now.

It’s not that I’m against spending, but I’d want to make sure it’s really worth it. I feel the same way—you want to enjoy it without feeling like you're throwing money at something unless it really adds to the experience.

If you’re thinking of trying it out, maybe start with the free version to see if it clicks with you. There’s no pressure, and you might end up enjoying it more than you expect.

I finally ended up trying it a week ago, I wasn't interested at first but after seeing so many people playing it, I got curious because it looked fun. However in my case it didn't get me hooked, I opened a couple of packs and it was ok, but the gameplay seems a bit boring to me. Plus I have the slight feeling that when the new card packs/new collections arrive, the difference between the free player and the paying player will be bigger.

Honestly, I had a similar experience. The gameplay didn’t really hook me either—it can feel a bit repetitive after a while. But for me, the main draw is the nostalgia. There’s something special about seeing those cards again and reliving the memories of playing Pokémon back in the day.

I agree with you about the potential gap between free players and paying players, especially when new packs or collections drop. It can make things feel a little unbalanced, which is frustrating. But at the same time, I think it’s still fun to dabble in it casually for the nostalgia trip. For me, that’s really where the charm is. 😊

It's a solid game, although I also play in a really casual way and mostly focus on the collecting aspect of it, the combat doesn't hook me...

I’m the same way, I play super casually and find the collecting aspect way more enjoyable than the combat. There’s just something satisfying about building up your collection, especially if you’re a fan of the franchise.

The combat is okay, but it doesn’t really grab my attention like other games do. For me, it’s more about the nostalgia and the fun of seeing all the familiar cards again.
