A trip to the Nursery with Good intentions.

in #hive-1406352 years ago

This year started off on a bit of a bump or two on the road of "HEALTH ISSUES" with visits to the dentist and Doctor's rooms.

Well!...after being diagnosed with High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol and been told to change my diet to green plant based and whole grain foods, not knowing where to start.
I don't always like taking prescribed medication, with all the bad side effects, I'd rather keep it as natural as possible.

As for my garden, nothing much happening there at the moment.
Everything seems to be dying off for some reason.

Maybe it needs a little TLC, I must be honest though, I haven't been giving it the attention it needs lately, I seem to have lost those green fingers some where along the way...or is it to much rain, we've been having a lot of that lately, the weather is kind of getting a bit weird here in South Africa, we have three seasons in one week...one day it would be hot as hell, the next day feels like one is in the North pole...Omg!, must be climate change Lol!

I need some new flowers and herbs in my garden...something to liven up the place, give the other plants a little boost you know, and grow some green vegetables as well, seeing that I have to consume more of them, and being so expensive to buy...why not grow them myself and save money, anyway, growing them oneself is so much healthier than buying from the Supermarket.

My greenhouse needs a serous make over for sure, looks very sad at the moment, over grown with those dreadful weeds.

So!...I thought, maybe I should visit my favorite nursery and see what Herbs and vegetable seedlings they have to offer.

Let me take you with me on a visit to the the Stone House Garden Shop which isn't far from where I live, about a 10 minute drive, into the countryside situated amongst the Green Hills of Kwa-Zulu Natal called, The Valley Of a Thousand Hills.

It was a slightly overcast and a misty day, hence the dark picture.
We are in the beginning of Autumn...well!... suppose to be.

Anyway, we went walking around the nursery in search of the right seedlings to plant in Autumn.
There were so many varieties to choose from, and having a small budget at the time, made it even more difficult.

medicinal plants.jpg
We walked through the medicinal Plants section of the nursery, wondering what herbs I should buy to make teas to help my cholesterol and High blood pressure.

I remember my grandmother use to brew cannabis and drink the tea for High blood pressure.
I didn't see any Cannabis bushes there, I think it's legal now?.

Maybe I should've done a bit of research on what herbs to use for my ailments.
Oh boy!...where on earth do I begin.

Help Dande-leo, I need your help.

Hubby and I went wondering around, side tracked a bit towards the beautiful shrubs and flowers on display.

daisies.jpg
The colourful daisies were most inviting with their beautiful array of colours.
I do need to attract more bees into my garden, they seemed to have disappeared.

My eye caught the Anise Hyssop plants that attract bees, butterflies and Humming birds.
That would be so cool to have more of those plants in the garden, don't you think?

If I were a millionaire, I would employ a Professional Landscaper to landscape my garden, and just have shrubs, herbs and green vegetables, just a little lawn here and there, much easier to maintain.

Mmm!...I definitely need some of those around the paving.

We got slightly sidetracked from the real reason we came to the Nursery. So many beautiful plants and seedlings to choose from, from medicinal to vegetables, shrubs and flowers, how does one choose.
Sigh!...it's so darn hard with everything being so expensive.

The hanging flower pots looked so happy and healthy over looking the Valley of a Thousand Hills.

It's really an awesome view from the gardens, so peaceful.

Hubby and I decided to take a seat at one of the Garden Tables and have a cup of coffee, before making up our minds what we "need" rather than what we "want". Lol!.

The Café serves the most delicious Pizza's and pies.

Omg!...my favourites and I can't eat them anymore...life really sucks sometimes.
No pastry, potato and rice...I love my carbs...man oh man!, this is going to be one hek of hard journey...my lifestyle is taking a 90 degree turn...well, I suppose it is for the best if I want to live a few extra years without health issues.

After the excursion around the Nursery, we left empty handed...oh my word!...I came to the conclusion, that I need to read up and do some research on Heart Health, after all, we only have one.

So!...I went home, scratched around my small library of Art books and Gardening.

Look what I found....a very interesting and informative book on Herbs and their nutritional values.

So!...as I venture on this journey to health and wealth Lol!...I'll most definitely be sharing with my Garden friends on what I've found in this delightful book on Herbs written by Geraldene Holt.

Until next time.

Stay healthy and happy...you only have one life.

Happy Gardening.

Loved this post, @artywink, when I finally got around to it (sorry!). That nursery looks amazing. YOu're definitely in the right place to ask advice for herbs, and if it was me, I'd be RUNNING to the medicinal plant section!

I went straight to licorice for blood pressure as I know it lowers it, and it's nice, but it'd be a challenge to grow I think to start with. Herbs you should grow for bees and YOU are thyme and oregano, as they're great all year round for both anitviral teas, baked vegetables etc. In fact you can make a lovely pesto from oregano. Along with rosemary, they're easy to grow.

I'm sure you'll take this on as a great project and when I'm not a passenger in a car on a road trip struggling for reception I'll have a think about what other plants/herbs would be a great natural alternative for you!

Awww!...thank you so much @riverflows, your comments have already helped me so much, I'm going to refer to it a lot. I do believe in natural medicines, and plant based. I seriously have to take the "bull by the horns" and go that way for sure.
Thank you for the advise, and stopping by.

Sorry to hear about the health issues, @artywink, but at least lifestyle factors can have a positive impact on both! Food in general really does seem to keep getting more and more expensive, so I know I'm thankful for every little bit we can grow at home to save my wallet some stress. It can be daunting to start, but just pick one or two things at a time and you'll get there!

To echo some of @riverflows comments, hibiscus (roselle/Hibiscus sabdariffa) is also good for blood pressure. I would think you would be able to grow it in your climate, but the weather truly is a mess these days! We get lots of fluctuations here, as well.

Wishing you good health up ahead as you start this new journey!

Thank you @plantstoplanks for the advise, truly appreciated.
Wish you good health too.
