GROWING GINGER IN THE GARDEN - AUSTRALIA subtropical climate PROGRESS UPDATE

Background

In November last year (5 months ago) i decided to have another go at growing ginger. I grew ginger and tumeric at the last house, but have not grown any here.

we are in the process of building out big vegetable gardens and IF the ginger is going to be a sucess it was going to feature heavily in our design as ginger is something we both eat a lot of and it is very expensive. Both these are key factors in what we are going to grow in our now garden.

Here is the previous post about the ginger:

Ginger

so i had a large chunk of ginger from the good ole supermarket actually. And i chopped it into bits using the pieces with "nodules" on it to plant in the ground. The pieces were well soaked and looked "fresh" not shrivelled and dried up. They need to be quite far under the surface a good 8cm or so. I have had to top them over with soil twice since as well.

A good quality potting mix with organic matter, a sheltered hopefully humid spot is best. I went with what i had. Ginger likes to be well watered but not waterlogged in free draining soil. This big pot was perfect. ( If you want a more detailed description of the process please see the previous post linked above)

THE PROGRESS SHOTS

The shoots took a while to come out. (underground) and i was worried that they were done for.. lol

but they eventually came out.
This shot below was taken on January 26th so 8 weeks after i planted them.

here you can see that the root is above the soil surface so i dumped a couple of cm of rich soil over the top of them. i looks like there is a quality amount of ginger in there. I have not dug down and checked as i don't want to disturb all the ginger and stop it growing.

Look how pretty tall and green these are! We want to use the ginger in big pots as an ornamental adition to the side of the garden. So hopefully it will look good AND be edible and productive. I don't want to put the ginger in the main vegetable gardens down the back.

concluding thoughts

ginger is growing easily and well here in this spot.
regular water
good quality rich and well draining soil
not in full sun
took some time to appear, but is an attractive plant that is useful.

I will update you all at harvest time whenever that might be.

Thanks for following my ginger report.

Ginger plant is very good for making herb and also good for cooking. Like post. Thank you.

I'm just going to blow some raspberries at you now as I look on jealously at your ginger...

What time of year would you harvest them?

lol.... yeah i'm pretty happy with it to be fair. Looks pretty good. Wish i could grow raspberries... lol

I'm sure i could harvest some now it looks big enough, but i think it needs about 10 months or so is waht i remember. It was supposed to be planted in september (but i planted in november) so i will probably go from the september date and harvest around may - june? See what it looks like :-) just in time for some nice winter warming ginger coffees :-)

Indian Ginger based coffee is the best! so amazing!!!!
