Squish, Squash, I planted my SQUASH!
FINALLY, getting even more in the ground! It's taken some time for the ground to warm up enough to be able to plant anything in ground that won't go into transplant shock and die. Recently, I got to get my Squash into their forever homes.
Planting My Squash, Butternut, Spaghetti Squash, and two kinds of Zucchini!
Earlier, I sowed seeds indoors on my grow table, for my butternut squash, my spaghetti squash and for my two types of zucchini: Black Beauty, and Golden Zucchini. I grow all my squash types in 10 gallon (38 Liter) Fabric Grow Bags. I start by mixing 1/3 soil from last year's grow bags, 1/3 compost, and 1/3 Sphagnum Peat Moss, from Canada. I add in some fertilizer supplements, to giuve the zucchini a boost. I typically use a granular organic fertilizer that is a lower release. I don't like the fast actiing liquids when first transplanting as I don't want to "burn" the delicate seedlings' roots, with too much nitrogen.
To this, I add a handful of blood meal, Bone Meal, both are granular organic fertilizers. This stuff takes about 2 -6 weeks to break down, so I do this a good solid month before I need to plant my SEEDLINGS.
Are you growing Squash?? Let me know below, in the comments.
My gardens are in Zone 7a/7b New England.
The BOTTOM LEFT four are the golden Zucchini. The four next are the Black Beauty, what most people think of as the typical green zucchini or courgette.
BELOW, the top three are my BUTTERNUT SQUASH.
ABOVE, the top right three are my SPAGHETTI SQUASH.
The courgette is a variety of cucurbit, which is from the same family as cucumber, squash and melon.
