Not much to offer from the Laughing Dragon Garden journal, as of late.
We had a few sunny days last week, and for just a moment it felt like it might be time to bring out the garden tools and dust off the boots and gloves.
Our wee garden mascot, a few days ago... still laughing, but veeery cold!
We did manage to get out in the garden to at least have a look at what problems snow and winter storms might have caused... thankfully, everything structural seemed to be largely undamaged.
This morning, we were greeted by more ”white stuff” and freezing temperatures. Just a poignant reminder that it still is winter here, and gardening season is not really going to start for another month or so.
The bird feeder got a fresh dusting of snow...
Of course, there is always planning to be done. Potatoes are starting to set sprouts in their box in the garage, and they will be among the first things to go in the ground so we might have new potatoes by June.
Garlic is sprouting in the garage, as well. In this climate, garlic is a very slow crop plant but the garlic we do get is wonderful and rich tasting! We often get a few heads early in the summer because they "accidentally wintered."
Yes, that's a solid block of ice in a pot filled with water. And snowflakes on top.
Meanwhile, my husband has been doing a lot of tree trimming, and with that making sure to save all the very straight 3-year shoots from the maple trees — which end up making excellent garden stakes. We like to make our own or re-use what we can, rather than make expensive trips to the garden center!
It may be winter, but the land does not go completely dormant. Tulips and hyacinths are starting to set leaves, and a few daffodils are also showing themselves. It’ll be quite some time before they set bloom, but there’s definitely signs of life!
A look out from behind the garden. Yup, that's still snow...
Hopefully, the next update will actually include the tender beginnings of actual time in the garden. In the meantime, that light dusting of snow does look very pretty, so a brief update was in order!
Thanks for stopping by and looking!
(As always, all photos are my own!)
