Yes! It is officially summer now. Time for a new update on my #hivegarden with a #gardenjournal
Things have really grown very well. We've had quite a lot of sun and in the past week also quite a lot of rain. Which was necessary because it hadn't been raining for weeks.
As you can see in the photo below things are growing well.
The beans and the cucumber are climbing, the zucchinis spread out and the tomato plants grow bigger and bigger. I really have to do some pruning to give the flowers and fruits some more space and let the plants it's energy for the important things.
Most of the sweet peppers are growing nicely. I've placed some bamboo sticks besides some of them because I don't want them to break with the heavy rains and wind.
The zucchini's produce a lot of flowers. Finally some more female flowers which I help pollinate with a small paintbrush.
And the first zucchini is growing! Hopefully there are more to come.
And also the first cucumbers are forming. They are still just a centimer long, but they have all summer long to grow.
The tomato plants are becoming quite tall and are also showing their first flowers. I wonder how long it will take before they grow out to become fruits.
Here's one of my presents from fathers day last weekend. My kids gave me this insect hotel. I hope it attracts a lot of bees so they help me pollinate the fruits and vegetables.
Alongside the hotel are the cucumbers (left) and the stick beans (richt).
The apple tree bears quite some small apples already. They differ in size, but also these can spend all summer to grow bigger.
As mentioned before the apple tree does have a lot of aphids. I've read that they don't really do harm to the tree or apples itself, but it doesn't look nice. Some leaves are all curled up. The ants are doing their best to get rid of the aphids. You go guys!
The plums are getting bigger too. They are still quite hard. I am going to put a net around it before they are getting softer to protect them from the birds.
I did notice something strang on some of the plums. There is this sticky stuff on top of some of them. It looks a bit like glue, Does anyone know what this could be? I've never seen it before.
The forest strawberries I've seeded weeks ago are finally having a growth spurt. I have to find a good spot to move them because they will soon be too big for the basket they are in now.
As every year our raspberrie delivers! Every day we can pick a hand full of these delicious sweet raspberries.
And the first Oxeye flowers have opened up. I hope they will attract some butterflies again, but I've read that the butterflies are having a hard time. The changing climate and fully paved yards doesn't help there.
I hope I can help them a bit with flowers and my butterfly bush.
Oh, and here is another gift I received from fathers day; some giant sunflower seeds. I've planted them right away and they are now just a week old. When they are big enough I will plant on several spot in the garden. I wonder how big they will become!
