Last month, we started clearing the backyard in preparation for growing some veggies. The hubby helped me out and we had the place ready, plant beds or what I'd like to call "plots" have been made. We were to apply some fertilizers but got so busy with other things that we forgot.
It was not until eighteen days ago (19th May) that I did some sowing on upcycled parcel bags. The following day, I sowed more varieties of tomatoes on some of the plots in the backyard (the seeds were from the UK). I was determined to have more stuff back there for us to enjoy in the next few months.
Then over a week ago (23rd May), I got into the gardening groove (again) and planted water spinach, corn, beans, red lettuce, and eggplant (total 6 plots). I was hopeful they would all germinate this June.
I lost track of the days and have not visited until this afternoon and I was surprised to see that the beans are already off the ground!
Unfortunately, only one of the water spinach made it and there was no sign of the corn, eggplant, and tomatoes. Have the seeds gone bad? Or are they taking their time under the ground and will show up soon? I wondered.
But we shall give them a few more days up to a week, then we will decide what to do next.
Disappointingly, only a few of the red lettuce sprouted when the whole plot was sown with numerous seeds. Whatever went wrong there. Those seeds usually have a high germination rate, but for some reason, not even 10% germinated. I intentionally had nets over them to protect them from worms or insects.
There had been no rain these 3 days so I should be watering them today, but while I was there, the thunder roared. Perhaps the rain will come tonight, we will see. If not, then the hubby will have to set up the sprinklers tomorrow.
The lettuce could take up to a month to grow larger before we can transplant them. And I might have to sow more if none will come out this week. We need leafy veggies so we are considering Bok Choy too.
On the way down, I photographed some other plants - Hydrangea, Garden Huckleberry (Nightshade, according to the FarmBoy), banana fruits, and eggplants.
Somewhere around the yard, most of the flowers (roses, hibiscus, wax begonia, crab cactus, bougainvillea, and whatever else) are blooming too! It dawned on me that there was so much red and pink.
Weirdly, I haven't noticed it before, lol! Perhaps it's time to grow other colors like yellow, white, and purple. I hope to find some and grow them within the year.
Anyway, it's been a wonderful day for us here. We were out in the morning visiting the farms as the workers reported problems with their crops. We had to go and check for ourselves. Fortunately, they were not as bad as we thought so all is good.
This has been my garden update for the new month and Happy Monday, frens!
