The bitter melon plant and it's beautiful and consumable fruit (EN/ES)

in #hive-1406353 years ago

Hello friends of Hive, today I want to share with you a plant that has grown like a carpet in my grandparents' house and that catches my attention. It is commonly known as bitter melon, but its scientific name is Momordica Charantia, and it is very popular because its seed is edible, or rather the seed coating.

This plant grew wildly from between the cracks in the ground, it is a vine, but not finding where to climb, it spreads all over the ground like a carpet. It has a small yellow flower and an intense yellow and very striking circular fruit, which contains inside seeds covered with a red skin that is usually eaten.

This plant attracts various insects, including bees and wasps that land on the flowers or on the fruits when they have burst exposing their seeds, you can see how the fruits that burst sooner are those that are exposed to the sun, those that are in the shade take much longer to open. For all this, the environment is embellished, because evidently this plant that spreads on the ground harbors life, it is a small paradise in the middle of a yard of cement and old tools and rusty materials.

The flavor of this fruit, eaten directly, is not very intense, it is slightly sweet, so eating its seeds is not an act of tasting as such. But in Asian countries above all, there are many different ways to prepare it in exquisite recipes, and it is also promoted as a plant that provides many benefits when eaten, including to counteract diabetes or to apply it on skin lesions, as it has antimicrobial properties.

I hope at some point to prepare a recipe with the fruit of this plant, because I am struck by its use as an ingredient in Indian cuisine, a cuisine that has a great reputation for the good use they make of seasonings.

Sort:

I love bitter melon, I am always using it as an ingredient whenever I cook mongo beans.

Really, that's pretty interesting. I'd like to taste something cooked with bitter melon. Greetings.

We grow it here in South Australia but didn't know that we can eat the seed coating too!
