Journal entry #1: Spring clean 2022

I have BIG plans for my greenhouse this year!
First, it needs a good clean. Secondly, it requires remodelling. I am sick and tired of these two rows of compost. They are wide and it is difficult to work here. Instead, I want to get proper tomato pots, a wooden two-tier planter and some other pots. So if the weather is too hot, some of the plants could move outdoors. Also makes it easier to clean the glass inside.

Moving the soil

I began by moving the soil on the right to the concrete base at the back. Very quickly I run out of containers and the last bit went into an empty compost bag.

So now it looked empty and ready for some scrub. ⬇⬇⬇

In the process of shovelling, I found four larvae (possibly moths) and a green shield bug. The latter has lived in my greenhouse for years.

I put them all together and left some greens on the side. If you know what's best, let me know as I do not want to disturb these creatures.

Cleaning

I tend to clean the outer panels once a year. However, last year I was a bit lazy and only did one side. It really shows and it felt like scrubbing forever.

Filthy!!!

Now, what do you use for wiping and cleaning? In the past, I used a brush that seem to have scratched the panels, so this time I had a soft cloth which did a much better job. And I have also bought a spray solution.

The order of madness was as follows:
- spray panel with water
- spray panel with a solution
- scrub panel with a cloth
- spray panel with water

For the inside, I have mixed white vinegar and water.
The result was spectacular! Although it did take a lot of time and elbow grease.

AFTER

I also had a tiny friend flying around. I think this is it! Spring has arrived!

I am so looking forward to the rest of the transformation!

Sort:

Having just downsized, I am going to miss my greenhouse, I guess I can grow a handful of jalapeno shrubs in the conservatory, enough for a supply of cowboy candy, but that will be it alas. envious!!!!!!

Awww, how about an allotment nearby? Doesn't have to be big.

I enquired, there is a long waiting list, I am on it. I have heard stories of it being trashed by fools quite often so ho hum, wait and see

The greenhouse looks like a lot of work, but it must be a great feeling watching the plants grow and working there. Soft cloths are often ideal for something like this, and I've had good experiences with them so far.

Absolutely! I hate the initial prep, but I love seeing the end result. I feel extra proud 😀

Wow, I would love to have a greenhouse too. But it also seems like a lot of work. Spring is already on the doorstep, working in the garden is a great thing. The result looks great! Unfortunately, I do not know how best to deal with the animals, but I'm sure there are some people here who know something like that:)

It is a lot of work, fortunately, only Springtime. Summertime there is a maintenance period followed by harvest.
I like to experiment and see if I can grow various new things each year. It is kinda fun! 🍅

I need a green house, but I don't have enough space. You have two sheds and a good sized green house! wow, I need to move out of London haha.

50% of tomatoes were eaten by birds and squirrels last year haha. The Strawberries had no chance at all. It was a constant fight between me and my wild life friends.

Yeah.... the bricked shed is going, we are building an extension. And the plan is to build a new shed at the back, well, more of a workshop for my other half. By the way, he built that blue shed himself.

I know London is amazing and it is quite easy to have everything on your doorstep, but the price doesn't justify it. You might be better off in Cotswold! Just imaging this peace and tranquillity, nice smiling people and fresh air. Did I paint a good picture? 😉 And these days you can work from home and travel to London from time to time if applicable.

And to save your tomatoes and berries, perhaps a net? Something I saw on the cherry trees to protect from birds. I lost some of the strawberries to squirrels too. Now I buy some peanuts and place them out for them. Hoping they will eat nuts instead of my berries.

Hahaha. Yeah, you did paint a tempting picture of Costwolds. I also had a look at house prices while I was there :). There was a museum "for sale" in Broadway that's probably cheaper than my current home haha.

Well, my squirrels are a little too smart for nets. I've seen them lift things neatly out of the way. I wouldn't be surprised if they simply dig a hole in the ground under the net 😂

O nice job, It really came out looking new. I am guessing you will see some huge improvements to the yields

Hopefully! I have had issues with temperature, issues with ants... now it feels like it is a new start. I have high hopes!

Whooooo project incoming! I don't remember that green house? Was it there when I visited? I'm looking forward to building one myself so I'm curious to how you'll progress. If I manage to build something like yours I might be able to cultivate strawberries.

Yep, it was there, right behind your back! I think you were way too tired and concerned about the next day

Looking forward to seeing yours. Time to switch from building ramps to building a greenhouse 💪

I was concentrated in that glorious burger!

I love your greenshouse. I am excited to see some updates about it on your next blog. Greetings from the Philippines!

This might take a while. The two-tier planter will be self-built which will depend on the weather outside. We get rained most days, which is a shame. But I am so excited! I wanted to remodel last year but as usual, the laziness got the better of me.

I too sometimes laziness got the better of me (^_^)
