Cloning every fruit & nut tree in this region for my future food forest 🌴

in #hive-1406353 years ago

IMG_2017.jpeg

It is true that I do not yet have land upon which I will plant my future food forest but this isn't important when compared to the dream itself, achieved not just through visualisation techniques but also through physical action which aids the overall manifesting process.

Gandhi used to speak of looking at the world not how it is but how you want it to be and obviously, physical action cements our vibrational belief system, sometimes to the extent that the world around us shifts into alignment with our strong perception of how things should be.

IMG_2018.jpeg

I heard a story once about a guy who wanted to go on holiday so he hung out at an airport where he could better visualise the excitement of people going on holiday and needless to say, through some complicated 'coincidental' events he ended up getting his free holiday as intended.

Even back when I was in rehab we had a saying "when you hang out in a bar long enough, eventually you'll have a drink" because the environment (or thought patterns) we become most familiar with become the very fabric of what makes of us us.

IMG_2009.jpeg

For this reason, each night before I sleep I make an effort to walk in my future food forest, reaching out to touch the branches of each tree. And now that I have finally started to plant my forest it is even easier for me to experience my dream of it!

One week ago I discovered the infinite possibilities of grafting and have since then been collecting cuttings from each and every tree I like the look of in this region, all of which are within walking distance of our home.

These ones here are almond trees, just starting to show their wonderful pink blossom. Esteban & Luna sat patiently while I jumped that fence with my cutters to snip four branches for our collection.

IMG_2011.jpeg

They know the drill.

IMG_2014.jpeg

Next up we visited this fig tree which seems a good strong variety to me. Four more branches in the bag.

IMG_2019.jpeg

We also snagged a red variety of hazelnut I've had my eye on for a while.

IMG_2022.jpeg

Quite beautiful when observed close-up.

IMG_2023.jpeg

All the branches are then labelled and kept in water while they wait.

IMG_2043.jpeg

I already have a bunch of different fruit trees grown from seed lining up here in the garden, mostly apples, pears, plums, pomegranates & grapes, all ready for their Spring inspection.

IMG_1987.jpeg

The avocado & citrus trees are hiding next to the warmth of our home for another month before they can return to the group for the summer.

image.png

While these plants are all going to be great no doubt, they may not match their parent plant exactly as they are not clones but naturally fertilised by the pollen of plants from elsewhere, making them a crossbreed and potentially less (or more!) effective than the original.

Even if these seed grown trees don't make amazing fruit however, I will use them as root stock for grafting.

Low budget DIY cloning

Just as it is for grafting, these cuttings I have been taking over the last few days will be a direct replica of their parent plant, producing the same quality of fruit.

Once home I snipped all my branches into bits (around 9 inches long) and wrapped around two thirds of each stick in cling film.

IMG_1995.jpeg

This creates a mini green house of sorts, keeping the twig humid enough to survive while it makes roots at the bottom.

IMG_1999.jpeg

If you have clear plastic bottles you could also cut them in half and place over the top of each twig, eliminating the need for cling film. And if you want to make your system even more effective, use clear plastic cups for the cuttings rather than plant pots. This way you will be able to see the roots as soon as they arrive.

I scraped a little of the bark off the bottom of the twigs with a knife as this will encourage root growth.

IMG_2001.jpeg

I wet the soil and made holes in it with a dry stick. Then I rubbed the ends of the sticks in aloe vera juice before pushing them in. The aloe acts as a root hormone.

IMG_2007.jpeg

After around 2-3 months they should have roots and will be ready to unwrap. Don't forget to keep the soil damp throughout this period. And don't let them get too cold.

IMG_2008.jpeg

I understand that soft wood cuttings are taken in the Spring while hard wood cuttings are taken in the Winter but I am not too sure how to categorise these twigs. It's a bit of a mix I would say, so some may work, some may not.

Over the last three days I have collected peach, apricot, nectarine, two varieties of plum, two varieties of apple, two varieties of fig, two varieties of hazelnut, cherry, elderflower, almond, persimmons & passion fruit.

IMG_2047.jpeg

For kiwis I understand a male and a female is needed to make fruit and for this reason it is better to buy as a grafted male/female plant rather than to try and create your own.

No matter. I have plenty going on for now.

IMG_2052.jpeg

My beautiful twig babies ;)

IMG_2053.jpeg

I also put two twigs from each variety directly into water, just to see what happens. Who knows, perhaps this is all you have to do? I saw many people on YouTube claiming it to be this simple.

IMG_2059.jpeg

Will let you know in three months which ones have grown roots!

The rainbow tree

Those of you who saw my grafting post will already know my mission with this humble little plum tree.

IMG_1991.jpeg

The genus Prunus permits all stone fruits to be grown on the same tree so this little guy will soon become our first 'rainbow tree' with different varieties of plum, peach, apricot, nectarine, cherry & almond.

IMG_2026.jpeg

Esteban is as excited about this as I am, so he had a little ceremony of sorts at the tree yesterday, placing flowers and colourful natural items around it.

IMG_2025.jpeg

His instinctive actions around such matters come from Bali I think, where ceremonies like this were a part of daily life.

IMG_2024.jpeg

I am happy to go with it, always ready to acknowledge his wisdom & guidance.

IMG_2027.jpeg

Many parents are confused about the direction in which the most important lessons flow and this has not much helped the forward progress of humanity over the last few centuries.

We can but try.

Here's Luna on her swing, posing for the camera.

IMG_2046.jpeg

And here's me! I know I don't often show you my face but I'm still here, busy being the guy behind the camera.

A little older, a little greyer, a little wiser and still dreaming ;)

Food forrest 😍 :3

@tipu curate

The words alone sound so great right? FOOOOOOD FORREST :)

Can't wait to see how your food forest develops. You are a true inspiration, mon ami!

My intention with these kind of posts is to share with people how simple this stuff actually is. And hopefully get others to give it a try!

All we need are some cloning & grafting skills and a person can completely transform the way their future looks...

Pretty exciting I would say :)

i am always impressed by all that you have going on whilst managing to be a great dad!

We ordered a bunch of materials from the local hardware store today and are planning to build a storage room, chicken coop, kitchen and a few small sleeping casitas. i don't foresee being on this land long term but this will enable us to have a stable and comfortable base to explore from. Perhaps i will find the motivation to make some posts about the project along the way.

Having spent far too many hours on this computer during the winter it is such a pleasure going on outside missions again, for both me and the children! Esteban has caught the planting bug and keeps expanding his garden to permit for more herbs & vegetables. Will have to do a post on this as I am so impressed by his enthusiasm and dedication to growing food. At age six!

I imagine you will have some fun building the chicken coop.

What is a sleeping casita?

Always love seeing what you are up to so please don't hesitate to drop me your posts should you make any.

I love what you are doing. And indeed, the possibilities of grafting are infinite. I am also planning to do some grafting in the coming months. By the way, I am very very much excited about the outcome of the food forest that you are creating. I have no doubt that it will be successful because I feel that you have what it takes to get it done just like what your father did... making great things that can last for generations. By the way, let me take this opportunity to say "THANK YOU!" for what your father has done for our country, the Philippines.

Wow! Didn't expect that. Your words relating to my father are deeply appreciated. He would be very happy to know that his legacy lives on there. Indeed, he loved the Philippines mostly for its people who he said were the kindest people in the world. Thank you for bringing his energy back to me this morning. Though in truth he is never far from me these days and the lessons he taught me as a child (intentionally & otherwise) are very much a part of who I am as an adult.

Good luck with your grafting! Please don't hesitate to drop me links here so I don't miss anything you post on this subject.

Thank you for bringing his energy back to me this morning

You're welcome (^_^)

Good luck with your grafting! Please don't hesitate to drop me links here so I don't miss anything you post on this subject.

Thank you, I am planning to do grafting this April if I have the time.

What an incredible orchard you will have! This is fascinating and I'll be watching for updates on how they all do.

It's going to be pretty cool hey! Tried a few more yesterday (another variety of fig) and dripped natural wax onto the tops of the twigs as a sealant. Apparently this can help prevent rot. Now I just have to wait patiently...

Great technique with that aloe plant! Also just FYI, honey works great as a rooting hormone. I have had great success with it :)

Yes, you are the second person to mention that here. Deeply appreciated.

I was half aware of the honey. Think I read it years ago. But in the moment I had an aloe vera plant to hand which needed trimming, so this seemed the way to go.

I may just add a few more however and try them with the honey. Would be interested to make a speed comparison. Perhaps one is more effective than the other?

Hey Sam 😉

Hey there! Good to see you here. I miss your mushrooms.

I know you post them here, it was just easier to catch them on wls!

All the best :)

I love what you are doing Sam, you are so on it and a huge inspiration to many and loved seeing you happy smiley face. You are creating such a wonderful future for your kids xxxxxx

I think it's a seasonal thing. My body is waking up again, the shoes are coming off more, there is stuff to do in the garden and my mind is a buzz with new activity and new dreams...

Makes me think of the simple pink flower which opens itself to the world after a long cold winter with crazy dreams of one day becoming a peach ;)

Sending hugs xxx

@samstonehill ! So blown away by this post, how much is shared and how much anyone can learn from this. Specially about fruit trees. I can see the sprouting and blossoming in my minds eye already.

Hey there brother! Happy you caught this one. And thank you for sharing the blossoming vision :)

For me, writing posts is more about catching waves of energy & excitement than anything else. And even better if I am discovering new information because by writing it down, I am learning it. It's kinda like a win win for everyone ;)

I actually downloaded a bunch of books yesterday on permaculture, agroforestry & food forest designing and my first thought having done this was to fire up the @survival-archive account again and start sharing what I have found. It's all just so very interesting & exciting! Especially when one is building the new information into to the ever-expanding dream...

I think I cannot emphasize enough how much I liked your post. I just discovered your blog and I will keep following closely!
We have a similar dream about a forest and the same obsession with sowing and growing trees. I haven't started growing trees from cuttings because I lack space and soil to maintain a big collection like the one you have, but I am trying to grow some trees from every seed that I can put my eyes on while walking in the streets of my city.
Reading about Gandhi and seeing the world as you imagine it, and also about touching the branches of your forest, really touched me. Thank you for such a wonderful post, it shows a beautiful perspective of your feelings and intention in life.
Best wishes and regards!

Hey there! I think this dream we have must be an important one, it calls so very strong. Can you imagine what the world would be like if everyone dreamed this dream? Quite a beautiful place I would say ;)

Thank you for your lovely words and welcome to my humble blog. I tend to post about whatever interests me in the moment so it can be a bit of a mix at times, but generally speaking the children & the garden get the most coverage!

As to not having much space, the wonderful thing about growing from seed is that you don't need much space at the beginning. Little pots work fine. My collection only looks big because I started them three years ago and they are in much bigger pots now.

All the best to you & your blossoming dreams 🌳

It's a cool science experiment, disguised as gardening : ))
!LUV
I didn't know hazelnuts looked that way. Well, I guess a part of the hazelnut plant does, anyway!

Must admit I also didn't know hazelnuts looked this way in Spring till I started observing the trees more closely in recent years. I remember playing with these 'cat tails' as a child without any idea what food the tree produced. Happy to know Esteban & Luna will not have this problem! Every day I test them as we walk around nature, what can be eaten and what can't. Knowledge like this seems more valuable than any crypto.

We need food directly. Money and currency are at least one step away from anything we need directly. : ))
!LUV

But you can't eat money or currency! And it is in my opinion unwise to make assumptions. In this case one assumes food will always be available and people will always be willing to swap it for something. While this may be the case I would say it is better to be on the safe side and have alternative options which rely only on the consistency of nature. Even if it's just one forest you get to know, where you can pick or trap different things at different times of year. Who knows, having an understanding of your forest may just save your life one day. Plus, these kind of adventures are so much fun!

Money has been swappable for food at every point in human history (except stranded on a deserted island scenarios), so it's a great assumption to make. Besides, nobody said if you have money/currency you can't know how to produce your own food. Having knowledge of food growing may save your life in one scenario, but savings might save your life in another. I have spent the past 20+ years adding to my understanding of both. I think another 200 years on each and I'll have a decent working knowledge :P

Thank you for your valuable way of looking at things. Have always had a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to money. Probably something to do with watching my father yearn after it to his own detriment. I will either have it or I won't. But knowledge, I can't get enough of it!

You are well ahead of me with 20+ years experience. Here's to that extra 200 years :)

Your personal experiences are pretty powerful ones! Your reactions are natural and probably tell us a lot about you (and all of us). Lessons to be learned all over the place.
Your hunger for knowledge and experience makes you who you are, and you're a very cool person :))

the environment (or thought patterns) we become most familiar with become the very fabric of what makes of us us.

I love this. I was thinking about this as I wrote a piece about my childhood hobbies for Ladies of Hive - I basically do the hobbies that I was raised with (gardening, yoga, surfing, herbalism, nature) because they aligned with 'the fabric of what makes' me, me - I was nurtured for this, but it feels like my nature.

The pink blossoms look so pretty. Thanks for the reminder of aloe for grafting - I use raw honey if I have it but if I don't, aloe is a good alternative I forgot about. Good luck with the grafts taking - I can see the future orchard now, with Estaban and Luna as adults with their children running through it, picking fruit.

I think you were very lucky to be raised with those hobbies! My mother did have a beautiful garden and an evident connection with nature but I don't remember too much in the way of food production or yoga going on. I suppose in some ways I was lucky to be locked up at a boarding school at the age of seven where I didn't feel good, because I instinctively found my solace in the simple things like looking after a piece of land (growing potatoes), building camps in the woods or sitting at a piano for hours, creating music. So I didn't particularly enjoy my environment as a child but this seemed to push me in the right direction to identify the things I really resonated with and many years later, once I was able to let go of the poisonous Hollywood dream, I could get back to those things I loved as a child! Back to the fabric of what makes me me.

Thanks for doing the visualisation with me. Brings a tear to my eye thinking about our grandchildren picking the fruit. I try not to hold on too tight to the assumption they will be around us forever, but certainly I would like that very much :)
