Welcome to my garden. My garden is in Addison County, Vermont. Things are super green here after a solid week of rain.
First, a couple of shots of the entire garden. Last year I blogged each week on building our garden. This is the second year.
We cleared some downed trees and brush to retake this small field. Then put up a fence and built raised beds. The soil in this swampy mostly pine forest is acidic and rocky so we grow almost every thing in raised beds.
A couple of things we do grow in the ground are raspberries - which actually grow wild on the forest fringe around our garden.
And blue berries which also don't mind the acidic soil. The support/netting trellis for the berries is new this year.
We added sweet corn this year. Last year we grew sunflowers down the middle of some of our beds but the squirrels destroyed it all. Our heartbreak/anger kept us from going back with sunflowers this year 🙁
Brussel sprouts were a big performer last year and are doing great again this year.
We planted more green beans and built a simple trellis for them.
This picture is today, 9 days later than the last! Look how fast they are growing (and the corn) 🙂
Our favorite crop is tomatoes and 3 of the beds have tomatoes in them 😊
Plus we have some tomatoes in pots along the fence and on our worktable.
We had lots of tomato seedlings. We planted them all. Some are also in a narrow planter along the back fence.
The small, narrow beds along the fences are new this year.
We were looking for more planting space and also for smaller plants that need some space like radishes. The bigger beds got so overgrown last year that some plants were crowded out.
There are small beds outside the garden by the fence posts.
The small beds have marigolds and 4 o'clocks. I got the 4 o'clocks seeds from my Mom but I think its too cold for them in Vermont.
A stray milkweed is in one bed and we planted a few sunflowers because we couldn't resist.
Speaking of milkweed, I love milkweed blooms.
I have a patch of milkweed I leave for the Monarchs. This area had milkweed before I cleared it. I leave an area each year for the pollenators.
Another little project outside the fence. I planted some onions left over from last season and let them go to seed. I hope to have a bunch of onions here next year.
One last new addition for this year's garden, Nasturtium. They are thriving. We have been enjoying the flowers and leaves on our salads.
Ok. Last bed has zucchini. The zukes are doing well. We also have some squash, cucumbers, and pumpkin scattered about the beds. Mostly along the edges so we can train the vines to grow outside the beds.
Whew 😅 thats a big post but its been too long since the last update. Happy gardening everyone! 🌻👨🌾
