Our big project - #garden journal

in #hive-1406352 years ago

There aren't many fascinating planting tasks going on right now in our garden. We are there almost every day with @fotostef and come back home exhausted, but the main work has to do with the fence and the paths. And of course mulching and how to make this rocky infertile place a dreamy colorful garden full of life.

The whole field is in levels, made decades ago, because the cliff is quite steep, so we made some stairs and paths to make it easier to go from one level to the other, seven levels in total.

Looking at this photo and dreaming of how this place can be in a few years.

The other main task is to reinforce the fence as the animals of the area already became curious and started digging underneath managing to enter in at least twice.

The one thing that is truly abundant in this field is ROCKS. In the last two photos below you can see how the ground is when we start working with it, before creating raised beds etc...

A quick look at the herbs we planted on January. Luckily they are doing well. Lemon balm, marjoram and rosemary.

IMG_3807.jpg

We have left ALL the wild plants that are between the levels and at the sides of the beds (if they were any!).

Helichrysum starts blooming and the thyme has new leaves. And you can bet we have anemones as well :)

IMG_3810.jpg

We also have some beautiful corners with wild herbs thriving together!

In order to maximize the use of space and take advantage of all the effort we have already done, a few days ago we planted onions between the rosemary. Just before the rain!

After the hard work, the reward is always a nice picnic and relaxation under the olive trees.

Back home, the first seedlings are growing.
Cucumbers (xylaggoura), cherry tomatoes, bok choy and pumpkins. I have shown them to you recently, so I will skip the photos this time.
I have to try again with the peppers, seems there is a problem with the seeds of last year. Hopefully not! They are local small peppers that are super juicy and tasty and perfectly adapted to the climate.

Let's take a look at the new arrivals! The parsley is ready to be transplanted. So is the samphire that I want to experiment with and see if it can grow here. The garden is not by the sea, but not very far either.

And we have some extra herbs and many more will come soon!

From left to right: yarrow - Achillea millefolium, another kind of thyme than the wild one we already have, that I want to see how it will be and St. John's wort - Hypericum perforatum.

I don't know if it is only because we are getting very tired at the field, but our energy levels are really low, so we thought we tried some microgreens. Here is mizuna, Japanese mustard greens.

Since @buckaroobaby recently shared a post about microgreens and a post about wild life in their place, here is the monster we have to deal with and keep out of the fence. The biggest carnivore animal on Crete: arkalus, the Cretan badger, and @buckaroobaby you can laugh as much as you want :)

I would like to invite @sjarvie5 for a garden update and @dora381 for an update on her indoors beautiful project for the #gardenjournal March challenge.
@becominghuman are you in?

All photos are mine, apart from those that I am in, so they are taken by my fellow farmer @fotostef.

Beautiful plant connections and abundant crops to all gardeners!

If you would like to know more about me this is my introduction post!

Sort:

That's an awesome project, despite how physically demanding it must be, I'm sure it feels extremely rewarding after a day of hard work and seeing the place take shape. Which animals started becoming curious?

Oh yes, already extremely rewarding! Imagine when it will become green and lively! Someday :)
The badgers are the curious guys!!! Like the one in the last photo, only that they don't look that cute when they enter the fence and dig up everything on their way!

Huge work! Reminds me of my place but persistence will pay off

Oh, I really hope so!
I remember on previous garden post that you were talking about rocks and poor soil, so yes, seems our gardens had similar starting point:)
Really curious and of how it will evolve!
Thank you for the encouragement!

Soil improves tremendously with mulch and compost but the main thing I have to remember now is how fast soil dries out on a slope. It's ok during the rainy season but a few dry days easily wreck the plants

Good point, thanks for sharing @nikv!
We have left all the wilds on the slopes, but I was thinking of maybe adding some more plants there. Now, I think it is a better idea to let the strong excisting ones spread and focus on the beds :)

Wow this is amazing! I really love everything about your post, the way you laid all the pics, your onions are already sprouting, right on time!

Thank you for the uplifting comment @edprivat!
Onions were indeed right on time, came back home, closed the door behind and thought "what is this sound?", it had just started raining :) We are usually a bit late, so on time was nice for a change :)

OMG you get badgers? YOu know when I lived in England I got to see lots of wild creatures, but the badger eluded me. Going to hunt again this year.

All that hard work WILL pay off - do you feel like even though its hard, you are creating something special? You watch, in ten years time you'll be looking at it in wonder, thinking, wow, WE CREATED ALL OF THIS.

Oh yes, we have sneaky badgers!
We knew that they would be attracted because the next cultivated field in the area is quite far away so it must be exciting for them.

Thank you so much for the encouragement! I hope it will pay off! We had started a similar project 8 years ago when we first came here that totally failed (it should tbh), but now we know a few more things and we are trying to avoid the old mistakes! Ready for the new ones :)
You say 10 years? I was hopping for 3, haha! Yes, I believe it is going to become beautiful and full of life (badgers excluded).

I only say ten as we are at ten now looking back. You'll notice differences every year!
If only Jamie didn't play with his cars so much, we would get more done!!

Oh yes, I know, I was kidding! Although I have set 3 years as a goal to see some serious change!
You've been only ten years and already have all these trees? Wow, pretty awesome!

Everyone needs his own toys :) And he seems to loooove them!

What a great update! That is a lot of land to clear. Great formatting too, it really gives a great sense of the project. The micro green shot is wonderful.

Thank you so much Sara! Plus, hearing about formatting from you means a lot :)
We always focus on what we do each time at the garden and I realised we didn't have the whole image of the project! Not an easy one, but hopefully it will slowly change to the best! I wonder how it will be this time next year :)

I am super excited to see it next year!

Nice selfie. I love your microgreens they look so delicious.

I hope they are!!! Will be ready in a couple of days, so we'll see :)
Thank you @afterglow!

You're welcome (^_^)

Love the one of @fotostef relaxing, and the badger is funny. But I bet not if he gets into the garden!

Haha, not at all when he gets in, digs up everything on its way...
But outside the fence it is super cute :)

The best time of the day, the relaxation breaks!
Thank you @goldenoakfarm!

7 levels in the field, I am sure it will be a lot of work but it is so exciting. I want to have a big field like that so I can grow plants I like. Do you have to do anything with the soil before you can plant anything?
Btw, thank you for your invitation, I am quite busy recently but will try to take some photos today and update you about my little garden

Oh, take all the time you need @dora381!
To be honest, I think your indoors garden is very inspiring and that's why I thought of you :) Everyone can have a garden! How cool would that be!

The soil, big chapter. This field had been formed in levels and then was abandoned for about 20 years. All the good nutritious soil of the surface has been washed out by the rain. So, we dig, remove the stones, dig again, form raised beds, add organic compost and mulching. A lot of work has been done and a loooot of work still needs to be done. But it is a fulfilling project! I hope you will have a beautiful rich field (I am careful with what I wish here, haha! Ours is pretty poor)!

Thank you. it is so true. At first I think it is impossible as I live in a small flat and we don't have space at all. Growing indoor plants is fine but a small herb garden with tomatoes might be a bit too much. But then I did it, I have learned so much with my little garden.

That's what I thought when I look at the field. I could imagine that will be a big job to prepare the soil and start growing plants. Well done you for doing all of that !LUV

@dora381(1/1) gave you LUV. H-E tools | connect | <><

LUV in the dark? The confirmation-reply may soon be turned off. This would be to conserve and replenish Resource Credits. Even while operating in the dark, your LUV command will still go through as usual. You can always monitor LUV in your wallet, at explorer A or at explorer B, or best, in real time at the luv-log channel on Discord.

The people doing V2K with remote neural monitoring want me to believe this lady @battleaxe is an operator. She is involved deeply with her group and @fyrstikken . Her discord is Battleaxe#1003. I cant prove she is the one directly doing the V2K and RNM. Doing it requires more than one person at the least. It cant be done alone. She cant prove she is not one of the ones doing it. I was drugged in my home covertly, it ended badly. They have tried to kill me and are still trying to kill me. I bet nobody does anything at all. Ask @battleaxe to prove it. I bet she wont. They want me to believe the V2K and RNM in me is being broadcast from her location. And what the fuck is "HOMELAND SECURITY" doing about this shit? I think stumbling over their own dicks maybe? Just like they did and are doing with the Havana Syndrome https://ecency.com/fyrstikken/@fairandbalanced/i-am-the-only-motherfucker-on-the-internet-pointing-to-a-direct-source-for-voice-to-skull-electronic-terrorism

That's quite the challenge raising a garden in that terrain, no wonder you're both tired! Everything looking beautiful though, hope the effort pays off soon 🙌

We hope so too, haha! Yes, a difficult terrain and a looot of work but I think we are doing a good job here, we'll see. It needs a lot of food for sure and it is not easy to carry organic material since it is not super easy to approach all levels. I am so curious on how it will evolve to be honest!

Thank you for the encouragement and sorry for the late reply :)
