Ba Chang Festival

in #hive-1413592 years ago

Every year, the parents of most of my Chinese students and some of my Chinese friends share these sticky rice dumplings they call Ba Chang. These are made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or lotus leaves with various fillings. One parent stated that they can be triangular, square, or round, but I only have seen triangles in Brunei. They say it comes in many kinds of fillings too but down here I was always given red bean in glutinous rice and/or pork meat with salted eggs and cashew nuts in glutinous rice to taste. It's both sweet and savoury, and I like how sticky and chewy it is. It also goes perfectly with black brewed coffee.

The Ba chang Festival (Chinese Dumpling Festival) is a Chinese festivity observed on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. It is a yearly event, and the Chinese usually eat dumplings on this day with their family. The majority of them share it with their friends and I am lucky to be one of them. It was held last month, on June 3rd, this year.

Have you ever had a Ba Chang, fellow hivers? They claim that it varies depending on where you get it. According to some, the best are in Penang, Malaysia. Some say in Singapore, while others say in China itself. I'm not sure, but the ones I get every year down here are exquisite and I enjoy eating them and sharing them too with my Filipino friends as sometimes they gave me too much. 😁

Happy weekend @asean.hive and fellow hivers!

It has the same name, Bacang in Indonesia, most people who make the dish is Sunda people. I do not know if it has Chinese name .. Here the descendant of Chinese people do not make the dish... I think it has different name for their community

Interesting @lebah . We also have the same thing we call Suman back in the Philippines but ours is just plain Glutinous rice no fillings. Then we dip it on sugar. plain and simple. 😊
