I've always wanted to show you some of the popular Filipino street foods in the Philippines. These street foods may not be popular with everyone, but they are among my favorites.
This became my favorite ever since my first bite on it when I was in Daycare. Do you imagine how young was I that time? I was 5 years old when this street food was introduced to me. Aside from school, I usually see and eat this whenever we go to church too. At my young age, if you'll bring me to church, I can't promise you that I will settle down to one place. It's either I wander around, run around or I'll go look for a food to eat. It's typical for a child's behavior but ever since I tried this street food or snacks, I've been looking for them to buy whenever we go to church.
Hot Cake
You can also call this a pancake. But because of the way it's cooked, we call it "Hot Cake" in our country. I'm sure you have your own term for this food in your area as well.
Flour, sugar, food coloring, milk, and other ingredients are used to make this. It's similar to a pancake, but the color and flavor are different. When it's done, smear it with margarine or butter and sprinkle it with white sugar.
On the first bite, it tastes fantastic and magical, and it's best eaten hot! I think I understand why it's called "Hot Cake," because it's delicious when it's hot. Hot, literally. Lol
The next street food is well-known during a specific season. I believe that the Filipino holiday season would be incomplete without seeing this scattered around the Church. This snack is usually found outside the church because it is popular after the Dawn Mass. Yes, you got it. During the Christmas Dawn Mass or Misa De Gallo in the Philippines.
Puto Bumbong
The purple-hued rice cake is cooked in a rather unusual way. It is placed inside a bamboo tube or what is also called in the Philippines as the bumbong ng kawayan. The Filipino term for the tool it’s made in explains the origins of its name.
This is just one of Filipino Delicacy. More foods best during Simbang Gabi can be read here.
The last but not the least street food is like 10000000/1000 for me if I am to rate. Among all, this is my most favorite.
Tempura/Fish Ball/Kwek-Kwek
Whenever I see someone selling this on the street, no matter where I go, I always end up buying one or two. Even after I've eaten, I always have a craving for this. No joke though.
There are times when I just buy tempura, squid balls or make my own kwek-kwek (small boiled eggs coated with flour and food coloring) from the supermarket and make my own sauce for it, but I am not as satisfied as when I buy it on the street. I know it sounds strange, but eating on the street with sticks and dipping into the sauce may be the best way to eat these kind of street foods. Aside from the sauce, you can also add toppings to it like chopped white onions, cucumber, and seaweeds. What a perfect combination! And now I'm craving. Lol.
These are the kinds of street foods I grew up eating. It's no surprise that I've grown this big, but we must be careful not to overdo it. We must still take care of our health. So which is your favorite? Have you tried them all?
