Be it for peace and harmony, money, good fortune, or a gift of gold, why are round fruits so significant in the Philippines as the New Year's celebration comes?
As soon as I got a deeper understanding of various things in life, one thing that kept me curious as a child was the significance of having round fruits on our table at every New Year's celebration. As I was told by my parents and grandparents, it has been a tradition for every Filipino family to serve such fruits. Despite the kind of life we have, we always strive to have at least a few round fruits. But one big question I had before is: why it's better if there are 12 different kinds of fruits?
A while ago, while heading to the market, the view of queued stalls of fruit vendors caught my attention. As I come closer, various fruity scents linger in the atmosphere. I couldn't just help but smile and feel excited. These feelings have become more intense as I get closer to the several fruits lined up. Of course, I did not waste the chance and took several photos.
While walking, I came across a very hardworking man delivering some fruits and the like. I don't know where it headed but I hope it was well delivered to its destination. Anyway, looking at the fruits feels awesome. My mouth waters as I look at the red apples and oranges that seemed very juicy and sweet. Diving deeper into these fruits, here's a glimpse of how significant they are based on our culture and tradition.
Oranges and Apples
Oranges are not only good for the body but they are also seen as gifts of gold. On the other hand, apples are said to attract peace and harmony. While these fruits are perceived as such, there is no denying that we also consume them because they are delicious.
Pineapples
As for pineapples, Filipinos believe it evokes good fortune. Some even buy tiny ones and put a string on them, then they would place it either in their doors or windows to allow good fortune to enter the house.
Grapes
Aside from their sweetness despite their minute appearance, grapes are believed to be linked with money. Since the grapes are linked together and seemed bulk, it connotes bulk of money. It may sound too cliche, but this fruit is amazingly delicious as well.
Watermelons
Watermelons are huge and does it have a connection with bigger luck? I can't say, but based on what other people say, the redder it inside, the more fortune is believed to be attracted.
Aside from these fruits, did you know that Filipinos also scatter coins during new year's eve and the family members rushed to collect them once the new year enters?
You read it right and it is actually one of the things that make the celebration even happier.
In addition to it, some families based on my observation, also serve 12 eggs on New Year's eve. Another thing is the bibinka which is also round. Everything seemed circular and even the clothes have polka dots. Well, who doesn't want to attract good fortune?
There is really nothing wrong about applying these beliefs in life but it is not a standard that needs to be met all the time. Having a few round fruits is already okay. What matters the most is we celebrate the new year with our family and loved ones complete and full of joy.
Happy holidays, everyone! May we all have a Happy and Prosperous New Year!
