Hello, my fellow Hivers! Today, I’d love to share how my family and I spent our Sunday morning. We visited Christ the King Old Cathedral Church in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, to attend Mass. This church holds great historical significance—it was the second church in the Diocese of Tagum and was founded in 1947. Also known as the Parish of Christ the Eucharistic King (PCEK), this beautiful place of worship has a grand entrance, a long main aisle, an exit, and an apse where the altar is located.
As we stepped inside, my family was amazed by the beautiful architecture and detailed artwork. The church features stunning statues and unique designs. Some statues depict angels holding lanterns, while others represent saints, each placed on the church pillars with their names engraved below their feet. The ceiling is also decorated with angel figures, and the altar itself is surrounded by them, creating a divine and serene atmosphere.
The Legacy of Bishop Joseph W. Regan
One of the notable figures associated with Christ the King Old Cathedral is Bishop Joseph W. Regan. Born on April 5, 1905, in Boston, Massachusetts, he dedicated his life to serving the Catholic Church. He passed away on October 24, 1994, at the age of 89, and was laid to rest inside this very cathedral.
Bishop Regan was the first bishop of the Prelature of Tagum (now the Diocese of Tagum) and played a vital role in strengthening the Catholic community in the region. He founded seminaries, schools, and hospitals, leaving a lasting impact on the local church. It is a tradition for bishops who have significantly contributed to a diocese to be buried within the cathedral they served, as a mark of honor and recognition for their dedication.
This artwork is the first thing you'll see when you exit the church.
A Vibrant Scene Outside the Church
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take many photos since the views were quite far, and we had to leave early. However, outside the church, we saw a lively scene—vendors selling ice cream, cotton candy, sampaguita flowers, and balloons. My son and daughter were thrilled and wanted to buy some treats. The surroundings were filled with trees, adding to the peaceful and refreshing ambiance.
Our family loves visiting this church because of its unique beauty and solemn atmosphere. More than that, it’s a special place where we can come together, pray, and ask for good health and blessings. Christ the King Old Cathedral is one of the most well-known churches in Tagum City, attracting a large number of worshippers every Sunday. Even when the inside is full, the church's design allows for additional seating outside, ensuring that everyone has a place to attend Mass.
Before heading home, I bought a blue shark balloon for my son and a princess balloon for my daughter—small souvenirs from a beautiful and meaningful Sunday morning. That's all for today, until my next blog!
