Managing the Kids & Household Alone Without My Wife

in #hive-14135925 days ago

Today, my wife joined a school trip with the Year 6 students and teachers from her school. They left as early as 7 AM. I dropped her off at the gathering point before they departed. The trip will last for two days, today and tomorrow. This means they will stay overnight at a homestay near tomorrow's destination. So, I’m in charge of taking care of the kids at home. Before leaving, my wife managed to cook breakfast and lunch for us and also ordered dinner for tonight. That way, I don’t need to cook today, except for tomorrow’s breakfast and lunch, since she’s expected to return in the evening.

The four of us stayed indoors all day because it was raining heavily and windy outside. It was quite chilly, even inside the house. Rex and Rez took turns playing PS5 and using their phones. They were absorbed in their virtual worlds, but I made sure they didn’t play gadgets continuously. They had breaks and nap times. It felt like a strange Saturday for me since I’m not used to being without my wife. Eiona kept herself busy with her activities. We watched a movie called Alita: Battle Angel together. It was a pretty good two hour movie, and Rex and Rez enjoyed it too. Eiona also loved it, and she kept asking questions throughout, like why Alita’s eyes were so big and how she became a robot. Kids are naturally curious, so I just entertained their questions.

Our meals today were more than enough. In the morning, we had fried mee hoon with chicken. For lunch, we had long beans cooked with chicken. Eiona didn’t eat the long beans since she doesn’t like them. The vegetables she likes are kangkung, spinach, and mustard greens, which we grow ourselves. She says they’re softer and tastier. So, she only ate the chicken in soy sauce but made sure to fill up on fruits like papaya, oranges, apples, and juice. Rex and Rez ate heartily, their portions matching mine. I feel proud of their good appetite. When I compare their weight and height to mine at their age, they’re bigger and taller. I checked my old growth record book from primary school, which I still have. It made me think I should create similar record books for my kids since their school doesn’t provide one.

The only time I went outside today was to water the vegetables under the roofed area. It was freezing and windy outside. Staying out too long could easily cause a cold or fever, so I didn’t let the kids go out. Even my hands felt numb from the unusually cold tap water. While cleaning the kitchen and washing dishes, the cold water made my hands feel stiff, probably because of the chill. Still, the day went smoothly. The treated water supply is also back, which means the issue at the water treatment plant has been fixed. There’s a lot to be thankful for today. Eiona is also doing better and didn’t have a fever like yesterday.
