Hello everyone, how are you? I hope you are all right. Last week, I visited a very remote but very busy coffee shop in the Pasar Baru area, Central Jakarta, Indonesia. This coffee is far from the hustle and bustle of the city. The location of this coffee is in an old house behind a row of cloth shops. The name of this coffee is Kopi Maru.
Why is Maru Coffee so famous? Kopi occupies a building built by a famous person in the Dutch era, I forget the name. If you look further, this coffee shop occupies a garage or warehouse. You would never guess that there is a coffee shop. If you are not observant, it will be difficult for you to find it.
On the side of the road, you will only find a small plan with the words "Kopi Maru". Maru coffee shop is surrounded by old houses. Inside this shop, there are papaya trees and star fruit trees which add shade to this shop. Outside the shop (outdoor area) there are umbrellas for visitors.
Kopi Maru has two branches. The first branch is in the Menteng area, Central Jakarta. The second shop is deliberately located in this area because this building is still owned by the family. I once wrote about buildings owned by rich people in the Dutch era in the Pasar Baru area. This house is his legacy.
Even though the place is quite small, many customers spend the whole day. The opening hours for this place start from 09.00 - 18.00 Western Indonesia Time. However, from Tuesday - to Friday, this shop is open from 07.00 Western Indonesian Time. Because this house still neighbors other communities, the shop owner decided to open until 18.00 Western Indonesia Time.
For the home part, the coffee shop hasn't changed much. There was light damage to the wall and it was left as is. The windows, doors, and architecture of this building are still like Dutch buildings (houses during Dutch colonialism). What is unique about this shop is that there is a board or plaque with the name of the old house owner installed.
The coffee offered is quite diverse. It's not just coffee that is sold. There are other non-coffee drinks, such as chocolate, milk and tea. Meanwhile, the coffee menu sells manually processed or manually brewed coffee. Coffee is also selected from various regions in Indonesia, such as Temanggung and West Java. How about this coffee menu?
There are lattes, americanos, cappuccinos and others. For snacks, this shop sells donuts, fried tempeh, and others. More precisely, the coffee shop is located on Jalan Pintu Air Raya no. 33, Pasar Baru, Sawah Besar, Jakarta Pusat. The following is the story I wrote, see you in the next story.
