About 9 months back, I was writing about helping my daughter Victoria with her house hunting.
Now that Victoria has a stable job, we felt that it was time for her to have her own house. The prices of houses have been rising in Kuching and are expected to rise even further in the future. Buying a house now will be a hedge against inflation and the depreciating Malaysian Ringgit which is now currently on a free fall.
Our house hunting started last year and the pandemic did not make things easier. Buying a house is a lifetime decision and so much thought and planning has to be put into the buying process. Just ask @justinparke, he just bought a piece of paradise in Cambodia and he went through the same ordeal.
Viewing houses, making appointments with property brokers and finally making a decision is a long and tedious process. The fact that we had a list of criteria helps us with the buying and decision-making process.
We had decided earlier, that the dream home would be a landed property instead of a high-rise. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, there is already a surplus of condos and apartments in Kuching. As such the prospect of capital appreciation is low. Secondly, with the rise of infectious diseases, it is now much safer to stay in a landed property that is of lower density.
We also want Victoria's house to be close to our existing house in Tabuan Heights. The problem is there is not much new housing development near our area as it is basically a mature neighborhood. This means that we need to buy a second-hand house.
With the above two parameters set, we went around looking at houses that we like and most importantly within our budget. We finally came across a double-story detached house located at Tabuan Park. The location is ideal as it is only about 10 minutes drive from my present house. Yesterday, we have received the good news from the bank that the housing loan has been approved. We are all ecstatic.
This four-bedroom and three-bathroom house seem the dream house, at least to us. The next task will of course of furnishing and decorating the house. This project will keep us busy for a while and I will give further updates here.
